This book left me more anchored, more aware, and deeply grateful for those who came before us, working toward a more just and caring public life.

Box weaves his insights through tender, thoughtful reflections on some of the most pivotal moments in American history—beginning with the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, which gently reminds us of the profound intentions behind our system of governance. He walks us through the Progressive Era’s sincere efforts to create fairness and accountability through civil service reforms, responding to an era plagued by corruption and favoritism. His exploration of the New Deal is both sobering and inspiring, as he highlights how, in the face of great suffering during the Great Depression, the federal government stepped in to provide care and security. And when he speaks of the Great Society—of Medicare, Medicaid, the Voting Rights Act—it feels like a call to remember that policy can be a tool of compassion and justice.

Thorough, but succinct, overview of the 4 different time periods of public administration. I might look to include this in a my principles course in the future instead of a different book I am using.

Author did a good job of being neutral politically, while at the same time making the case for treating people with respect and encouraging an educated populace.

This is a short, unbiased history of public administration in the United States. It is very readable, and provides an excellent insight into the culture and politics of each era that has lead to our present time.
