Not a single likeable character in this book. The h was a weak sex mad SIXTEEN YEAR OLD who was weak and pathetic while the “H” was a sex mad teenager who abused and let others abuse the h.
I am a tolerant reader and actually prefer anti hero’s but I have to say I loathed Caleb with everything in me and seriously couldn’t believe how weak female characters were portrayed in this book. Cheating and sleeping around seems to be the norm in this book oh and let’s not forget the slut shaming which was so prevalent whilst the manwhores got away with a manly reputation. I was so disgusted with the contents of this book I honestly can’t get my head around what I just read! I don’t mean to disrespect the author but as a female it guts me that another female can write such weak female characters who go mushy and let everything go because their hormones take over their brains. Needless to say I won’t be reading the sequel!

This is the first book by this author and for being the first one it is brilliant! The writing style is very good and she keeps you on your toes. It isn't "just" an enemies to lovers it is so much more it has a lot of dark in.

But unfortunately for me there was a lot of things I don't quite enjoy in my other books. But in this one I pushed it aside and kept my mind open and that helped. It also helped that they weren't actually together. Maybe that's why I was able to let it go.

I truly love enemies to lovers and it is very hard to write those too, because you need to be able to make enemies and not completely hate them while reading. She did a great one!

I'm looking forward to part 2. Normally I don't start one where the other one isn't finished, but I was so intrigued that I really needed to start it! Also the author is just the sweetest!

Note: this isn't for everyone! I would recommend it, but I know a few of my friends who wouldn't like certain things.

I’m not really sure how to rate this one. It’s total trash, but I couldn’t look away. I’m going with a 2.5⭐ round up because it was free with KU and kept me reading in a trainwrecky sort of way…BUT it will not work for many… especially safety or romance readers. This is neither. It’s so OTT and unrealistic… it really reads like a HS version of Jordan Silver if her H’s were abusive assholes.

The H (Caleb) is terrible… physically and emotionally abusive. The OW (Anya) is nuts… total psycho. The h (Emilia) is a doormat with the worst case of BBS I’ve ever read. It is not safe… at all. The sexytime is dub-con at times. He pretty much demands sex, she complies, then he either drops her off or tells her to leave. He calls her Doll.

This isn’t for anyone looking for romance, realistic feels, likeable characters, etc. This is for readers in the mood for a raunchy version of 90210 if Dylan shoved Brenda around and Kelly was insane. Add in some stripper/prostitutes, catfights, HS bully shenanigans, and you’ve got the soap opera drama-llama smutty plot.

Bottom Line- It was fun for a while, but it got old. I can get behind mindless trash and LOVE crazy OW drama, but Caleb was awful, and Emilia has no fight in her. It ends in a cliffy… and I’m interested enough to continue.

Safety-

This book would generally be my kind of book -- bully romance, steamy, dark themes, antihero, some other woman / other man drama. Hey, I even dig cheating. This book despite having characteristics that I generally liked, was rather poor in its execution. It had the elements of a great new adult enemies to lovers / bully romance, but just faltered in having unbalances in those themes that would normally draw me.

For instance, the other woman drama blended into cheating to which the heroine just seem to accept. At some point a woman says WTF and kicks the guy to the curb, maybe after she screws him.

The hero was an asshole, most definitely, and I generally love an antihero, but his behavior knew no bounds. He basically did what he wanted, which in this case, made the storyline bland, predictable, even at times boring.

The story was missing the characteristic theme of a confidante to the heroine, which meant the reader was in her head all.the.time. Too much telling and not enough showing.

Generally speaking the writing could have been stronger; it was repetitive, overly descriptive (and the prose was nothing notable); not much really transpired from day to day --same settings, same people, same behaviors.

The cheating was rampant -- but only from the hero and generally the men in the book. There was no counter, no retaliation or equal measure from the heroine. I have no issue with cheating in and of itself. I had issue with the unrealistic portrayal of her tolerating it such that she came across as pathetic. I lost respect and sympathy for her, and I like to like the heroine in stories.

Major annoyances:
Lots of useless cigarette smoking, and reading about lighting them and extinguishing the butt. Also, what mother simply condones her 16 year old daughter's smoking to the degree she even picks up cigarettes for her?

There was a lot of inner dialogue -- "soliloquies" -- from main characters. Ad nauseam. Sarcasm and attempts at humor.

So why four stars?

I loved the taboo themes -- the angst cheating, the other woman drama, the asshole hero. Many authors, many books will just not go there, and this one did. Plus the steam was off the charts. The author didn't wait until 80% to introduce the sex. Their coming together was always explosive. Had the story been tighter, I would have definitely found myself giving this 5 stars.

WTF?

I'm not even sure what the heck I just read. It was such a messed up book that I'm at a loss for words. I will read the next book because I need to know what is going on but man I'm at a loss. This book was great but the characters are truly all over the place. Caleb was a sick SOB and I'm pretty sure what he did was borderline rape. He was so despicable and I can't wait for someone to put him in his place. Yes the outcome of this story intrigues me so again I will read on and I hope the next book is better

The Dark Knight was sexy and addicting. It was a great Bully romance. Emilia and Caleb had problems, namely in the form of Anya.  Caleb wasn't exactly my cuppa with all his cheating but it still had me glued to the page. I wished that Emilia wasn't basically a doormat but again the times she did fight back, she was spirited. This was an ok read. 3.5 stars! ~Ratula

There are not words to express how twisted, violent, and abusive this book is.

The H is irredeemable.
The OW is evil as fuck.
The h is a doormat.

I’m only pissed it took me 18 months to read it after it hit my radar.

On to book 2….

TW: this is beyond bully and straight into dub-con and sexual abuse. Just sayin’

"Nothing will ever be the same again"
-
This is L.F. Piper's Debut Novel and she wrote an amazing dark story, that'll grab your attention.
Her characters were fresh and fucked up from the mind.
Her writing was flawless, I love the way she held my attention towards the story and make me feel emotions from the start of the book.
You'll feel so many things as the angst in the story was Ah-mazing.
-
"My name is Caleb Knight & I have no idea who I really am.
A darkness has surrounded me since birth.
A lost soul.
I don’t care if anyone finds me.
I hope she finds me."
-
The Male MC - Caleb Knight is literally a lost soul. I was rolling up with emotions he drew up in me.
One second I cared & pity him, but the next second I wanted to choke him up & put some sense in his mind.
He was harsh, stubborn, ruthless n Shameless Bully and trust me he Owned it
As you further try to understand his perspective you will fall in love with him.
-
"Her body wants me, but her head is always trying to talk her out of it.
She’s always in a war with herself over me."
-
Now about Emilia, she was a strong character in this classic world of high school teenage world.
She was way to ballsy & bada mouth that love to speak things and show people their true face.
This was exactly what made her stood out in the crowd & also made her a target.
I really loved her personality but sometimes even she needed the soft love & that's how she searched things in the wrong place &stumbled upon a lost soul who had sucked her into his world.
-
"I've felt a lot of things in my life, but nothing like I'm feeling right this second with Emilia, curled up in my arms."

-
There's nothing best then a love story that has a fire which could choke you up until the end of your breath but then will relieve you with it's small moments.
-
The Dark Knight is young romance in all its modern glory with cliche bitches, royal douchebag & loyal friendships.

"4 rousing stars"
The Dark Knight (book 1) Starting off with Emilia, a school student, who's been dreading her move to the states from the UK for a long time and find herself in a completely new world in the Richmond High School,
where she tries to deal with the mean classmates, bullies, our own dark and brooding the Caleb Knight, the total royal bitch of cheerleader Anya Walker with her minion bitch squad.
Caleb being the jerk tries to intimidate her and get inside her head. By doing everything in his limit to hurt, give her pain and bullying her but couldn't help but seduce her still.
The story continues with both of their POVs and we see flashbacks from Caleb's childhood and all his demons.
Emilia being one strong willed female tries her best to not let herself fall prey to the one person she wants to hate forever and in spite of her better judgement she's trapped with the dilemma of whether or not to bare her heart completely in front of her own tormentor, and fall in love with him.
Anya who's hell-bent to get Caleb for her own and calling him her boyfriend tries everything possible to make Emilia's life hell.

They all hate me.
She belongs to me,
but she’s obsessed with me.
She can go to Hell, he is mine.

description

All and all I really enjoyed this book.
I couldn't put the book down as it really intrigued me.
Full of angst and possessiveness, jealousy and lust.
Although Caleb was pretty mean and awfully cruel to her at the beginning (may consider throughout the book),
Which just adds up to the sexual tension between them.
Every interaction between those two were dripping with lots of sexual tension and lustful, hot scenes.
Yet Caleb succeed to totally piss me off throughout some of the scenes.
I totally get it. I do and where he's coming from. He has dealt with pretty terrible things since childhood.
I could also see him and his character developing towards the ending.
Behind the main characters I loved some of the other characters in the story too that continued to give life to the whole story.

The story continues to the next book in series.
I can't wait for to get some answers about the ending in the first book and get to know more about it.

My name is Caleb Knight and I have no idea who I really am. A darkness has surrounded me since birth. A lost soul. I don’t care if anyone finds me. I hope she finds me.

I'm a bit ashamed to say I couldn't put this book down. It was an absolute trainwreck.

The Hero is an abusive jerk with zero good qualities. Seriously I love a bad boy but this guy..HE SUCKS!

The heroine is a sixteen-year-old girl who needs help but isn't getting it from anyone in her life.

The communication in this book is torture. I need communication!

I'm hoping part 2 will clear up all these holes that the author has put in this story. If not I'm going to be very disappointed.

I hate to give books a bad review. I DNF at 52%.

Honestly, the fact that I made it that far is amazing to me. It was like watching a bad sitcom but you just keep watching to see if it gets any better...it doesn't.

I love books with antiheroes but the secret to antiheroes, is to make you feel conflicted about them. You hate to love them and love to hate them! They are a-holes yet you can't help but fall for them with the heroines. Anthony Rowling from Consequences comes to mind. Anyhow, Caleb is none of these things. There was no conflict in my emotions. I mean, he is an a-hole alright but he is an unlikable a-hole. There is nothing redeemable or likable about him.

The heroine is not much better. I found her unlikable and highly stupid.

The sex scenes are unrealistic. Caleb is physically abusive. Not hot at all.

Last but not least, I was more interested in two of the side characters: Ellis and Kaydee than I was in the main characters.

I'll give this a pass.

Hard to sympathize with heroine

Heroine is a loose term because I don’t think she is a hero in anyway I found the FMC to be very weak and extremely dumb.

Even when she tries to speak up for herself she is not as mentally strong as you would think she would be.

I found the dark Knight Caleb to be a horrible person I couldn’t find any redeeming qualities that made me want to root for him. I could look past what he had done as a child or even had done prior to the beginning of this book but what he does during the book is just disgusting him and his friend are gross. There was a bit of character development but short of a lobotomy could not see Past his treatment of other characters.

I found all the women in this book to be extremely dumb.
No one seems to have any self-respect.

The one friend that the FMC makes seems to have become a completely different person it’s not really explained as to what happened. Maybe it will be explained in the second book

It was very hard to really identify with anyone. I understand that the FMC Was mentally exhausted from being bullied but I also felt like she was doing more damage to herself than anyone else was.

Personal issue the smoking was gross and a bit much but i understand ppl do it but parents supplying is a bit ott

Not really sure I will continue on with the series I was able to get through it, the writing was OK. it wasn’t the best but it was fine I would actually give this book a 2 1/2 stars but I rounded to three for effort.

it wasn’t my favorite and I really love the bully genre but I don’t think this was done as well as some other books I’ve read.

I want to give it more...

This story is great. Like, reallllly good. The problem with this book is editing. As in, it needs one. It’s clear this book is the author’s first because of some of the mistakes she made. There were a lot- spelling, misuses of words, grammar, words just left out of sentences or added when they aren’t needed, content- like Em’a first class is study hall until she’s late for school then she’s missing algebra. Also, this is a personal thing that has always kind of annoyed me- British people in America can use British words for things. American people in America need to use American words. There were quite a few times Caleb used a British word when he should have used an American word. Lounge specifically comes to mind. These are easy fixes with an editor. in America, it’s a living room, family room or even a den would have been okay but that’s not how we use the word lounge. I don’t normally leave reviews like this but my hope is the author will read this one and will go back to work on this book...because it has so much potential!

Read this book as it was a recommendation. Not super into it. There were so many errors, that it really threw me off. Let me back up....the author obviously isn't from America, so I don't know if it's proper to say sat for sitting, such as he was not sitting there, is he is not sat there. It's stuff like this that makes me really not like the book. The author tried really hard for a bully book, and it falls short. I was not bowled over, and I certainly felt like the main character was not relatable, and seemed unsympathetic.
I gave this book three stars because I realize some of the errors could be from the fact that the author is not American, so I don't really want to ding her for that, but it was so bad it was hard to make complete sentences. I feel like the author had a great concept for a bully book, but fell short. I am reading the second half of this duet as I don't want to half ass the reading of this story. This is told in dual pov.

A brand new author with a bright future ahead of her.

This is not my typical genré, but I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It is a great spin on a new kid at school, and the twist is certainly unexpected. It was inspirational to see a fresh face in the field who is confident and strong enough to push limits for not only the readers, but herself as well. I look forward to reading the next book. I will say when I was reading the book, I noticed there are several hot topics that are addressed in this book but they are so well written that they don’t jump out as being forced topics. I am very curious to see where our characters will be taken in Book 2.

And celab is literally the worst and sick character I’ve ever encountered oh and also the heroine? Is also the worst i mean at the first day of school celab was downright mean to her and like he’s abusing her physically!!! And he took her to his house and they had sex and the heroine was like wow i love to do it again and i was like what the fuck!!?? Wow they are just meant for each other 👏🏼

I know this is “dark” but this is like the worst book ever and I don’t know what the heck the author was thinking writing this book
