I really enjoyed the first volume. There were some clever relationships, and the twist on the history was really fun. But, all of the flaws in the writing were glaring in this second volume: jarring location changes, events without context... it completely destroyed the fun, tension, and plot from the first volume. Disappointing.

The Dauphin of France is robbing houses while mort-vivants roam the land.
I should sum this up as 'what the heck' because this story went from interesting and intriguing to bat shit crazy in one volume. The focus on the first volume was the twin brother of Marie Antoinette who survives a zombie attack to take her place and marry the Dauphin. This one is - something? I'm really disappointed in the weaknesses in this volume. There is no logical flow to the story and I was completely lost. Sadly, I'm cutting this series loose.

My I don't want to say that this manga went off the mark but it sure did present all of it's ideas like a mad machine gunner with no idea where to aim an what's loaded in the thing, and the fire rate is fluctuating like crazy. I've lost it on the analogy.
This concept is weird and wild and really fun to read. It was executed really well in the first but lost all of it's momentum and interest in the second. The ideas that seemed cool in the first came off as oddly placed, hard to follow and in this world of angels, living dead and demons they introduce a load of McGuffins that have something to do with a completely different thing to what is happening.
Characters act as though they didn't just see one of their friends get dismembered 5 separate times and then stand back up as they have a comedy scene that was hard to follow and not very comedic. The resolving scene was nearly the exact same in this volume as the last, lady fights angels dudes, she wins, they retreat, rinse repeat...
The art however does not fall short. The style and full arts are really stunning, the only thing I can critique when it comes to this is that there are two characters that are dressed nearly the exact same and are both secondary characters which is a little hard to follow and remember.
They introduce the big bad group in this volume as well but only for half a chapter and then swiftly move on to something else. Which ended up ruining the reveal and the end of the last volume and lowering their cool factor by a bit.
Hopefully they're able to tighten this idea up and make it work really well. Juggling this many ideas in such a short manga run is going to prove very hard but I always hold out faith. Now I must wait for the translated version to come to North America, more time to read things!

L'univers de Versailles of The Dead de SUEKANE Kumiko nous tend à nouveau les bras grâce à ce deuxième tome riche en événements. Le fait que l’oeuvre soit en proie à de nombreuses nouvelles apparitions de zombies dans ce second volume est très appréciable ! Je souhaitais notamment beaucoup plus de combats sanglants contre ces morts-vivants, et cela est chose faite.
Une multitude d'intrigues non consistantes se met en place trop rapidement dans cette nouvelle aventure. De plus, même si je trouve les mélanges historiques (De Marie-Antoinette à Jeanne D’arc notamment) intéressants, cela ne fait que me perdre de plus en plus. J’aurais préféré un aspect temporel plus réaliste, bien que la présence plus significative du côté surnaturel me réjouisse.
Malgré quelques révélations à la fin de ce tome, je suis déçue qu'on ne se concentre pas plus sur le personnage d’Albert puisqu'il est clairement le personnage qui met en valeur Versailles of the Dead. Cependant, l’autrice développe d'autres personnages à place. C'est ce qui amène un aspect très positif de renouveau. J’ai surtout aimé la transformation d’un personnage que l'on connaît tous en zombie ! J'ai hâte de découvrir comment vont évoluer toutes ces histoires de morts-vivants !
En conclusion, Versailles of the Dead est une oeuvre qui continue sur sa lancée initiale avec ce deuxième tome. Alors que dans le premier tome le côté surnaturel n’avait pas su me convaincre totalement, cette fois-ci je trouve qu’on est assez gâté. Cependant, ce qui m’avait le plus plû, le développement d’Albert, se retrouve en arrière plan contrairement à ce que j'espérais. Aucune date de parution d’un troisième volume n’est annoncée pour le moment, ni au Japon ni en France, mais je compte bien continuer cette lecture dès la sortie de ce prochain tome chez Kana !

These characters are really going through hell, but it sure is entertaining. I want to know just what is causing all of this. What happened to Bastien? What is Albert? So many questions I need answers to immediately.

The second volume and more twists and turns, lots of gore and zombies, and many OMG moments!
Whereas the first volume was all about Marie Antoinette, or well at least 90% of it, this volume is all about Gerard, a knight/guard of the royal family along with a bit of a view of one of the families targeted. I was quite surprised by that, but I did love it. It showed us another side to the battle against zombies, showed us some more on how these zombies are created, and there are many other twists. And Marie Antoinette does get a bit of a spotlight in the later chapters.
The first chapters are about Gerard, a guy from the knights/guards. We follow as he is trying to kill zombies, save people, protect royalty, and figure out who the hell is stealing jewels and such. Is it using zombies as a way to get certain things? My heart broke in that first and second chapter though as we also follow a boy named Emilio and a girl named Carine. She is rich, he is poor. They are sort of friends at least that is the way it seems even if he is apparently also her servant of some sorts. I don’t want to say too much, but I can tell you that I was just crying.
Those chapters with Marie Antoinette, holy crap, I didn’t think the manga would go that way. I thought this was just going to be a scary manga about zombies, but then the mangaka threw that kind of being in there and what happens next… I was just shocked OK. I was totally taken by surprise. It does fit MA though, very much so. They often comes across as supersweet and caring.. but we have seen their darkness. And they are apparently even willing to go that far. Yeah, I am keeping it vague. At least I try to. XD
I really like that Joan of Arc is mentioned, though I am quite worried about it as well. Haha, given this world… is she a zombie or something else entirely?
I also loved seeing some villains? I am guessing at least, given things, but I guess we will be seeing more of them later in the stories. I do love their names, haha, I should keep a checklist of those important French names and see if they are getting added!
The art is still very much awesome + the zombies are just so scary. It is as if they will just pop out of the manga pages.
All in all, sorry for the vague review but you really need to read this series. I don’t want to give too much away! And I will be getting the next volume when I can!

2,5/5. This will be my last of tis series! Not that it was that bad, just very light and the Versailles part isn’t just present enough, for most of it, this is just a typical zombies manga. The end is probably what turn me off for good, when angel like creatures came in, and this just confirm that this series just kind of shoot in every direction with no continuity and no actual plot structure solid enough to keep me going.

What the actual hell?!? This didn't make sense at all. It didn't feel like a cohesive story at all and a bunch of random things were thrown in totally out of nowhere. It gets two stars for the idea of the story and the art, but everything else was awful.

Hmm, compared to how intriguing and action-packed the first volume was, this is a bit of a let down because it seems to introduce basically a whole new plot. Antoinette barely features in this volume until the end, and it seems like the second volume only introduces new questions instead of providing any follow through from the first.
What saves it is still the amazing artwork though. I think the pacing of this story might be better suited for an anime.

Je n'ai vraiment rien compris à l'intrigue.
Il ne se passe pas grand chose.
On tourne en rond et on referme ce 2e tome sans vraiment distinguer de valeur ajoutée.
Je pense que je vais m'arrêter là dans la série.

The series took a bad turn quick for me. The court ladies are unnecessarily mean to the king's mistress and the zombie storyline went religious fast. I also feel like more could be done with the dynamic between "Antoinette" and the prince.

Nowhere near as good as the first. I still love that it's using historical characters but otherwise it's getting lackluster.

Je continue de me mettre à jour dans les mangas que j'ai à lire. J'ai beaucoup de premiers tomes de série et il est temps que j'en lise pour savoir si la série me tente ou non.
C'est au tour de Versailles of the Dead, que j'ai découvert en le trouvant d'occasion. Avant ça, je ne le connaissais pas.
Pour moi, c'est une bonne surprise. Je m'attendais à quelque chose où ça tue juste du zombie sur un fond d'Histoire de France. Mais finalement, c'est plus que ça. On suit de nombreux personnages qui ont tous des secrets. Et on en découvre déjà quelques uns.
Les zombies ont l'air de jouer un rôle assez important dans tout ça. Ils sont d'abord perçus comme une maladie. Mais finalement on se rend compte qu'ils n'attaquent pas les gens par hasard. Pour le moment, on ne sait pas encore s'ils ont un but précis ou si quelqu'un les contrôle. Juste des suppositions.
On découvre aussi des anges et des démons. Pour le moment, ils ne sont pas rentrés plus que ça dans l'histoire. On les découvre mais on ne sait pas encore leur but ou leur rôle dans tout ça.
Finalement, ces deux tomes ont été une bonne surprise. Je compte continuer ce manga. En plus il ne comporte que cinq tomes donc c'est assez court. Quand un manga comporte déjà pas mal de tomes, ça me freine toujours un peu.

angel, demon, zombies oh my.
Bastion is my favorite character in this besides Albert manipulating them all. the beautiful choas was satisfying at the last part. this is a reread and so much better the 2nd time.
