HIGHER LEARNING

Now that Cartaphilus has chosen to enter a long slumber, peace has finally returned to the little cottage west of London. But it’s not long before a message arrives for Chise: an invitation to join the college, a society of alchemists. Deep beneath the British Library, the curtain rises on a new story set on a new stage. There, human children learn, think, and grow…but what of those who are inhuman?

There were a lot of new characters introduced in this volume, which became overwhelming. There are new dynamics being set up between characters, a further look into alchemy, tensions between alchemy and mages and of course brewing trouble with the church. Overall there was just ALOT to take in, but still I liked it. The writing is beautiful and I love me some Chise, Ruth and Elias.

I thought the new college setting was an excuse for the author to trim back the supporting cast and replace them with a new set of characters, but no. All the old characters are still here and given their moments in the story along with all the new college students and professors. The author estimates in the afterword that she has added 15 newbies, but my count puts it closer to 25, with a total of 41 named characters in this volume alone. And there are only 180 pages!

Again, this is a pleasant read, but there is no way I'm going to remember this epic cast and their numerous subplots in a week, much less the unknowable number of months until I have the next volume in my hands.

This title needs some serious focus instead of its endless sprawl.

We first meet Chise, chained by the neck and wrists being passed over to her new owner, a bone-headed mage whose name she learns later is Elias. A penniless orphan sold on the black market she learns about herself, the magical world filled with fairies and other fantastical creatures as well as what it means to be a part of a family. Her new life as a mage's apprentice is just the beginning as it comes with the secondary title of Ancient Magus' Bride...

The Ancient Magus' Bride vol 10 starts a new storyline with our intrepid couple as Chise AND Elias head off to college. We meet a slew of new and old characters. We learn that there is tension involved with Chise coming to the school with the college's officials. And there is someone dangerous lurking around who is interested in Chise's arrival. Near the end is when the bomb goes off and we know that even though everything looks kosher on the surface, things are about the change for these two and its not going to be pretty college life!

The Ancient Magus' Bride vol 10 isn't really a stress filled or tense volume because they are literally arriving at the school and different arcs are developing as we meet people. I really loved the creepy who examines Chise like she's a science experiment... how is that going to work? And there is a new girl who hangs with the spy...! Chise in her role as a herbalist doctor helps her out and now I'm wondering about split loyalties!? I like that Chise isn’t blindingly trusting but senses things... and I really liked her first teacher!

GAHHHH we meet the house moms in Chise's dorm... and I LOVE THEM! If you read the series you will know who I mean, they are companions to humans a lot. I can't wait to see where that new relationship goes. And Elias has an "accident" in his classroom!! He gets chewed out by a familiar face and its these types of relationships that I love... Elias doesn't have many friends so yeah, this is going to be good if we get more bromance with him too. We learn that something about the dual curses is plaguing Chise... so the past will certainly be haunting her. But now its time for some more positive experiences and some new friends. I wouldn't want our couple to be parted for long so I'm glad that Elias realized that too.

Nothing about the art particularly impressed me. The Ancient Magus' Bride vol 10 simply as as good a art as normal. We get some really great funny frames with the exaggerated Chibi art. Since this is a new situation these were really fun. The doctor's character design was so neat and creepy and out there. We're introduced to new kinds of magic through her and some magical ideas through Chise's professor. So yeah its all good setup.

The Ancient Magus' Bride vol 10 is a solid setup for the new story arc. I'm totally raring to see what happens at the college... With Elias there too I hope that we can see some more couple development along with all the new friends and potential enemies. Tension is present but its roiling under the surface. The first big bomb has dropped but we'll have to wait until vol 11 to see what the fallout is all about. See you then!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Chise and Elias attend the Alchemist College.
So many new characters, so many plots.
Chise still has Josef's eye in her head, but he doesn't seem to have hers. I forget what happened with that.

I think this should've been a Volume 1, titled "The College Arc"... But I'm not high up enough for that so life goes on. Very interesting start with a boatload of new info to digest. Looking forward to the next volume!

Book: The Ancient Magus Bride, Volume 10
Author: Kore Yakamazaki
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

I can’t believe I’m on the tenth volume of this series already! I must say that with each volume I am finding myself enjoying it more and more. I like the direction the overall story arc is going and how much character growth we are getting.

I really like the direction the story is going. In this one, we get to see the characters going to school and seeing how they work in this new environment. We get to see how they are growing now that some of them are apart as well as getting to meet new characters. Not only do we get new characters, but we also get to see how the world and the magic system comes to expand. We see how the magic has grown and see different sides of it.

We also get to see Chise trying to fit in with her peers. In the first class she’s in, we see her classmates learn that she is a mage and get to see their reactions. We also see her deal with a rather unwelcoming roommate. Add into the mix that she has to try to make her way through a new environment and try to make sense of that. While the Chise we get in this volume kind of reminds me of her character in the earlier volumes, the character growth does come out here. We see her face these rather difficult situations in an almost new light. She takes what used to wear her down and shine with it. She adopts and does so very well. She is taking what life throws at her and goes with it. I just like what has happened to her character and I really enjoy it.

The plot, I feel, has thickened and really developed into this amazing story. We started out with characters and a plot that was good, but it was something we have seen before. Now, the growth and the development that we have is just amazing. We get so much and get to see how everything is coming together. I really can’t wait to see how everything is going to play out. I just know that I need to pick the next book up soon.

Anyway, I know this review is kind of on the shorter side, but just know I that am really loving the growth and development that we are getting with each volume.

Magus Bride 10

Hello!

Today is a big day (there is a massive animal crossing update out and so, of course, that is how I have been spending any and all time outside of work today). But animal crossing aside, I have been struggling a little bit to find my next read after finishing up my last one. I have tried a few things and nothing has stuck so far so I decided to try and read a manga or graphic novel for a little bit to see if that helps me feel better! So far this plan has definitely worked out. This series is one of my favorites, I have been reading it from the start and have watched the show. So reading another volume is like coming home, always a great time, welcoming, and just makes me feel better. On top of all of that this particular story arc happening right now is hands down my favorite so far.

SPOILERS AHEAD

In this volume we see Chise going off to magic college! We see her, Elias, and Ruth head off to campus where we meet a lot of new characters and get to see our first magical college. Elias also agrees to be a teacher on the campus and Chise meets her roommate and sees some of her courses.

I wanted to keep the summary for this short because this is volume ten in this series. I know this is a new arc in the series and you could technically pick up the series here and start but I recommend starting from the beginning. Its a truly amazing series and the show that follows the first arc is just as amazing. I can not wait to see where this arc goes but so far it has been my favorite. I am giving this volume five stars on Goodreads and crossing all of my fingers that someday the show will bring this arc to life!

Class is in session.

With Cartaphilus deciding to take a long rest he is no longer an immediate threat. However life is not about to slow for our mages as Chise gets an invitation to come join a college for Alchemists. Don't be intimidated by the large number of new faces as we enter a new stage of the story. I am sure the most important players will be far more noticeable in the future as secrets are revealed and magic occurs. Then as if that were not enough something is happening with the church so Elias will have to deal with them as well while the adventure continues. :)

The change of pace in the story is extremely drastic in this volume and I’m not entirely sure I like where it’s going, but I’m giving it the benefit of a doubt because it’s the set-up volume for the next arc

More dark fantasy, more development of Chise, Elias, and Alice. New characters are introduced and more hints to Elias' past are dropped. Win-win all around.

A great set up for a new arc. At times the introduction of all the new characters is a bit confusing. I am excited to see where this series goes.

In this volume, we begin a new journey with Chise and Elias, as the college that has been mentioned previously becomes the main focus of the series, as well as other elements that have previously been in the background.
This volume was well thought out, and the art continues to be lovely and detailed. Elias is definitely giving Chise the opportunity to choose how her future looks, and that makes my heart sing. We met some new characters in this volume as well. I am interested to see how they play into this story as it progresses.
This cliffhanger is a doozie though! Bring on volume 11!

Ancient Magus' Bride goes Hogwarts as Chise and Elias start college.

I like that Chise is finally growing and Elias is finally respecting her as a person, but this volume was a lot of set-up, including way too many new characters and only a few of them being getting any personality. There's also not much of Yamazki's usual artistic whimsy, since there aren't that many chances add magical creatures to the backgrounds now that everything is set inside classrooms and cafeterias instead of the natural world.

It's been a while since I have read the previous volume, so I've forgotten a bit about the previous arc. Interesting start of the new arc, but the introduction of all the new characters was a bit overwhelming for me. Nevertheless I'm curious to read how Chise & Elias will change in this college setting. I also liked the mysterious vibes of some characters.
