In 1592, a group of morris dancers in the woodland of Pinner is intent on torturing Old Mother Saxton for witchcraft. Meanwhile, a newly-wed is murdered locally. As more evil deeds follow, the townsfolk believe they are under a witch's curse. Only Simon Forman can reveal the truth.
Judith Cook was a lecturer in theatre at the University of Exeter. She wrote several mysteries based on the casebooks of Dr Simon Forman, an Elizabethan doctor and astrologer.
I have enjoyed other books in this short series about the Elizabethan doctor Simon Forman. This one was very slow-paced and the plot seemed, to me, very obvious.
This is a bad choice to open a reader to the work of Cook. Slow paced and tedious, I was bored from the start and abandoned after just 60 pages. I have forgotten most of what I've read and kept confusing the two main protagonists with one another. The idea has promise and I may return to give this a second chance.
Nice reading under the Elizabethean reign. I am happy to have discovered the writer. I recommend it to all who love historical books.
