Slučaj Jugoslavija

Rate this book

Lucidan i solidan vodič kroz osamdesete.

The book was actually published after a series of articles / installments in a newspaper and then further developed in to a book (in 2000).
The author, admiral of the fleet Branko Mamula served as the SFRY Federal Secretary of National Defense prior to Veljko Kadijević and chose/recommended him for that post upon his retirement, having worked for many years with him, being a mentor. In the book , he provides his perspective on the complex events leading to the breakup of Yugoslavia and openly admits that he made a gross misjudgement in case of Veljko Kadijević - that he was anything but a "man of action" that he should've been.

He provides a proper insider perspective as being the last genuinely "Yugoslav"-oriented military leader of the JNA (Yugoslav People's Army). He had a unique vantage point on the internal workings, political disputes, and military decisions of the late 1980s. He had access to a wealth of classified information and participated in top-level decision-making processes.

In the book, he offers a detailed analysis of the political, economic, and ethnic forces that undermined the federation. Mamula focused heavily on the rise of nationalism, particularly Slobodan Milošević's actions and the diverging interests of the republican leaderships, which he believed ultimately fractured the state and the army.

A key point for Mamula was addressing the transformation and eventual dissolution of the JNA. He argued that the JNA was initially a multinational, genuinely Yugoslav institution, but that this character was eroded by nationalist forces from various republics, particularly in the late 1980s. He noted that the Serbian share of the officer corps increased significantly during that time, shifting the army's orientation.

With this book, I'm convinced he was responding to Veljko Kadijević's memoir. Mamula's book was also a response to other narratives and accusations that emerged in the 1990s. He sought to present what he believed were the facts and correct what he saw as "delusions" or propaganda regarding the JNA's role and the causes of the wars.

He wrote the book in his retirement, observing the full consequences of the wars of the 1990s. Publishing it in 2000 allowed him to reflect on the entire decade of conflict, providing a comprehensive historical and political testament from his perspective.

A must-read for any aficionado of Yugoslav history!
