The Lonely Planet travel guides are always both interesting and useful. Filled with information on the history of each place, plus the history of the attractions and sites that are available to visit, the travel guide provides both a great reference to learn about an area and to travel and get around when visiting.

In this guide, each city/area within the region is first introduced with facts and figures, and an overview of its history. Maps and charts are nice visual references sprinkled throughout the text. Sections that follow include eating, with break down by types of food, sites/attractions, including ancient sites and with the history of the places in the description, shopping, nightlife, entertainment, seasonal festivals/events, and transportation options. All of the offerings come with gps coordinates, websites where available, and hours of operation. Itinerary suggestions can get you started if you don't know exactly what you want to do. There are tips for saving money, staying safe, and getting the most out of your time even if it's brief.

This travel guide comes in handy whether you want to read it in advance or while touring a place. It's a great reference as you navigate a new city/region and you can't go wrong when following their suggestions for places to see/eat/stay. Additional reading is suggested, as are other useful references such as books and websites. At the back are language basics and a glossary of terms.

When I prepare for a trip to a new location, I like to read a variety of guidebooks. Whether it's from the local chamber of commerce or an independent organization, each one has a different perspective that helps me put together a more complete picture of the places I'll see.

To that end, this title is one of three I've purchased (so far) for my upcoming visit to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples. I particularly enjoyed the cultural and historical notes about the Campania region that were toward the end of this book. The sightseeing portion included places that are not on my brief itinerary; I deliberately skipped those for the sake of my own convenience.

This is a very thorough look at the Amalfi Coast area, and I would recommend it to any travelers going to that part of Southern Italy.

The 2023 version is unusable. LP has redone their guide books so now it is 70% flowery commentary about destinations. The list of recommended places with actually useful info is gone. Trust me and skip it.

Lonely Planets guides are the best. You are not only getting useful information, but you also feel like you understand the region and its people ( we will see how accurately in 2 weeks’ time).
Could be fun to read some Sweden/Poland guide now I think of it.

Incredibly repetitive... difficult to read on kindle as not well enough indexed.
