The third book in the Flight 29 Down series, The Return, brings a new character into the fold... And ignites some pretty big drama...
This is definitely a middle grade / young adult novel. It packs the dramatic punch while making things not too serious. I found that I easily related to some of the characters, and I'm sure others readers will as well.
Mature middle grade readers and young adults will enjoy this book series. It's unique and full of adventure.
In the book Flight 29 Down- The Return, a group of students take a trip to an island through school. One of the planes has a malfunction and crashes, nobody knows where it is. The kids have to figure out who their leader will be and fast, they need to know what they have and what they need to find. The leaders of the group are Nathan and Daley, Eric and Taylor are the slackers, Melissa and Lex are followers and do what they are told. The other is Jackson. He does what he wants. Nobody knows his story. He's just kind of there. Four other students and the pilot decide to go hiking through the forest to find help and see if there's anybody else on the island. They are gone for a week and there is no sign of them. Then eventually, one of them gets separated from the group and finds her way back. Her name is Abby. I decided to interview Nathan to see what he had to say. I would recommend this to my friend because the characters are very relatable. The author did a good job of putting real life teenage problems into the book. This group of kids are literally at a life and death situation and they are still dealing with drama at the handfuls. The author shows really shows that drama takes place anywhere and also gives a way to deal with it. "Do you think you should be leader of this group?" I definitely think I should be leader of the group. My great grandfather did this sort of thing for a living and wrote a couple books on it. I have read them all and I know what I am doing. Daley doesn't know squat. We took an anonymous vote on who should be leader. The candidates were Daley and I. Somehow, Jackson won the vote by a long-shot. I felt sort of betrayed but I'll have to live with it... for now. They'll come around and realize they need me later when we aren't being found. "Why do you think that?" I think they'll realize they need me when Jackson doesn't speak up and take charge. They need someone who isn't afraid of saying what they think and getting the job done. They'll need me I just know it. They have to need me. I'm the only one on this island that knows what I'm doing. "Who is the person you depend on most on the island?" My best friend since when I was little is Melissa. We've always been there for each other. She always has my back and supports me. But when the vote was taken place, I found out she didn't even vote for me. She voted for Jackson. I guess I can't blame her, she's always been a follower. I know she's there for me, though. I am thankful for that.
I did not realize when picking up this book that it was three in the series. I ran across the title while ordering books at the library and it sounded interesting and they didn't have it marked as number 3. I went ahead and gave it a whirl. I may not have had all the back story but appears a plane full of teens crashed on an island. The girls are being teen girls, the guys are being teen guys and trying to work together some what to survive and get rescued. Definitely geared towards the young adult mindset and I think more for the girls than the guys.
It's very similar to the t.v. series, in fact it almost identical. Not that that's a bad thing. I love the characters and enjoy the setting, I just think there was an opportunity for more. They could have put more drama into it, because what works on screen doesn't always work in a book.
It's a little unrealistic, it's all very teenage dramas they are dealing with, there are a few ones thrown in by the elements that it more realistic though.
Flight 29 Down 3 is definately the best so far. The plot twists indefinately and gets better as you read it. The main event is when they find an eighth member from when the plane crash landed on the island. The 8th member has a interesting tale to tell the seven survivors about her experience,in fact the rest of the crew may not be alive... Read the book to find out the answers!
I think that this series is an awesome series to read. I think everyone should read it.(Read the first book first.) One of the good the things that that book had was surprises. For example, I didn't think that Abby would come back, or that she would come back alone.
This book had exactly what I needed. There is lots of talking and little action which is what I like. The author John Vornholt has lots of stuff he wants the characters to work as a team to survive.
