Hearts in Trouble

Donnie and Olivia are separated, one in Metal world (aka Metalia) and one in Paper world. While Donnie works on saving Metalia’s heart from being stolen and its citizens from being harmed by the beasts that roam the forest, Olivia is crowned Queen of Paper world and struggling to don the mantle of leadership. Donnie soon finds that the Queen of Metalia is a genius but is not being completely forthcoming with him. Can they find each other again before Metalia’s heart is stolen and they lose each other forever? Will either acknowledge their undeniable feelings before it’s too late?

I will be honest. I didn’t care for this book. It read like bad CS Lewis fan fiction. It also appeared to be more for the YA crowd though I couldn’t find it labeled as such. However, since I have listened to other CS Patra books and enjoyed them very much, I would listen to other stories written by Patra. This one just didn’t strike any chords with me.

Jonathon Johns did a decent narration with questionable material. I enjoyed his tone and cadence and he sped up or slowed down his narration to capture the right feel for the story. He didn’t try to reach for female voices but you knew who was talking at all times.

This is the first in the Patterns and Parallels Saga I've read, but I like the concept of the series. There are multiple worlds that you can travel between and communicate between. Like I said, this is the first I've read, so I'm not sure if the other books have as much explaining in them as this one. It seems like we find out a lot about how the traveling works, how communications work, and the different worlds. I wasn't that interested in the relationship between Donnie and Olivia, but I think most of that could be attributed to the length of the book.

I listened to the audio version and Jonathan Johns did a very good job narrating. I liked the speed, but I have a feeling some audio listeners will find it too fast.
