Are you ready for a delicious Mother's Day treat? Pie shop owner Bertha Hannah might not have any children of her own, but this Mother's Day she is celebrating by helping to cater a Wine and Cheese party for some of the richest ladies--and mothers--in all of Culver's Hood, Nebraska. She has a delicious cheesecake tart prepared for the occasion, and things start off swimmingly, until a gruesome discovery is made at the elegant venue. When the hostess of the party is found, face down, in one of the estate's beautiful fountains, Detective Harry Manor is all too ready to point a finger at one of Bert's fellow church members, who happens to be at the party. Bert steps in, along with her friends Shiv and Carla, to see what clues they can find to exonerate the innocent churchgoer, before the real killer slips through their fingers and gets away with murder.
Bert is hired to provide a special dessert for a Mother’s Day event by an 80-year-old wealthy woman who tends to be cruel to her employees. Imagine Bert’s surprise to find this woman dead with her head submerged in a fountain. This series is pretty terrific and the author is fantastic. The pies certainly start a craving in me every time I read their descriptions!
Entertaining read. Although it is part of a series it could be read as a stand-alone book.
Bert’s pie shop has has been hired to provide dessert for an exclusive Mother’s Day party. The annual event takes place at an estate where special grapes are grown for a wine produced only in small batches. The owner of the estate is demanding and harsh to her employees which causes much tension. After a particularly troubling conversation Bert goes looking for the hostess only to find her dead, with a person that had been told to leave. Even though Harry, the homicide detective warns her off, Bert is determined to find the killer.
I was given a copy of the book in return for an honest review. Bert has landed a catering job for a socialite but it doesn't exactly go as she had hoped. As usual, she finds herself involved in a murder and just can't help investigating. I really liked how Carla took part in investigating this time. This book seemed really fun despite the murder and reason. The tone just seemed much lighter and Bert really was much more charitable towards Claudia than most people in her situation would be, giving it a hopeful and uplifting feeling. It is nice to see more of Bert outside of her shop.
I think that Vera was just an old rich stick in the mud. So one who does dent care about anyone but herself. And I understand why the Killer felt the way she did. Very well written.
This is just a great series. The storyline is nice and tight and the characters are enjoyable. My only complaint would be the book is just never long enough.
Bert is hired to supply the dessert for a very picky, wealthy woman's Mother's day event. Things go wrong when the hostess turns up dead during the event. To make matters worse a church member friend is a suspect.
Another great read. Love all of Carolyn Q Hunter's books.
Bert has a Mother’s Day Catering job that could lead to big jobs in town for some of the wealthiest families. The client in notorious for being a difficult and Bert hopes her delicious cheesecake tarts meet expectations. The event begins without a hitch but things go downhill quickly when the hostess begins confronting guests who were not to be invited. When Bert finds the woman dead a woman she knows from church immediately becomes the prime suspect. Bert enlists her best friend Carla and employee Shiv to help her This is a fabulous series! The characters are well written. I enjoy the way they interact with one another. The plot moves at a steady pace. With each new book in the series our vision of the town expands. This setting added a neighborhood with old money to the map. This book could stand alone, but I have to read a series from the beginning. This series is worth going back to the beginning. If you enjoy cozies I recommend you read this book and series.
