I enjoyed this book. There was a lot of action, an interesting story, and good dialogue. Nevertheless, the ending seemed a bit abrupt and the plot was a little loose. A good beginning collaboration.
This was a fast, outstanding read. I was very impressed with this book after being let down by it's predecessor, Seeing Red.
It seemed more true to the Reggie character in the Harvey Bennett Series that we came to know and love.
His badass self seemed to show through a lot more in this book as he took on a gang of thugs on his property in his new home in Puerto Rico.
We had a glimpse into his past as to who "the girl" was, as referenced to in the first book. It gave his character some depth.
At the end of the book, Reggie learns he has a new, but old ally. Someone, who he never dreamed of seeing again. Someone who teaches him that he will never truly be a normal civilian.
Realizing, he will most likely be on the run or in hiding for some time he leaves Puerto Rico for Brazil, where it doesn't take long for him to make a friend who will help him on the road to his new life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the next episode.
I want to thank Nick Thacker and Kevin Ikenberry for the advanced readers copy. In return, I offer this completely unbiased review.
Gareth Red, following the events of the first book in this series), winds up on island of Puerto Rico. He just wants to be left alone to surf, drink beer, and forget everything from before, especially Russia.
While surfing on a public beach, he is attacked by a local gang responsible for more dangerous things than roughing up civilians on the beach. They have picked the wrong man to mess with.
And then someone from the bank (book 1) wanting to Reggie to admit that he killed a man and forfeit his money/wages. They have picked the wrong man to mess with. Or have they. With a gun in his face and a shotgun aimed at the back of his head, things look grim.
This book, or novella, really, reads like a full-length book, and I mean that in a good way. It is dense with action and sufficient description. Characterization is realistic but terse.
A welcome addition to the story of Red before the Harvey Bennett series
Gareth Red was one of the characters within the Harvey Bennett thrillers who had a potentially interesting past. This tale continues on from Seeing Red, with Red now settled in Puerto Rico, where he has started to take up surfing. One of the local beaches is frequented by a local gang and of course they rub Red up the wrong way. The Bank is also seeking a return of its assets from the previous tale (or is it?)...Follow the intrigue as Red has to fight the local gang and the Bank, before he can continue on his journey - next stop Brazil.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
A short thriller starring the best friend in the Harvey Bennett series. I have to say that I was skeptical that I would care enough about Reggie to read a book about him. I was wrong. This is a great short novel to let us know more of Reggie’s history. And we grow to care more about him. Overall, short, thriller, great characters, great addition to the Harvey Bennett universe.
When I reviewed earlier Thacker books I commented that his writings were reminiscent of James Rollins. This book is more like his normal style. I'm a character reader, I get into the characters, their story, who/what they are, what makes them do the things they do & why. This is a good book, you can't wait to turn the next page! No spoiler's here, though I will say that with Thacker's track record I can't wait to read the next book in this series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
This a real page burner. From the first chapter to the last, I couldn't put it down. Gareth Red should be renamed Jack Red because he falls into the same class as Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher. Constant action and a very believable story. It was a bit on the short side, but it left me with a need for another episode in the "Red" series by Nick Thacker and Kevin Ikenberry. Anxiously waiting!
Kevin Ikenberry has done an amazing job of getting into the head of Gareth Red and taking his character forward. This is an exciting and emotional story that I found almost impossible to put down, even for sleep. Marvellous!
Really enjoy learning more about Reggie. Seeing Red was just the beginning. Watching the transition to his character in Chasing Red to who he is in the Harvey Bennett Universe is great. Can’t wait to read more about him.
This was a good start for Gareth “Reggie” Red. Good paced with lots of action and the start of decent character development. It was an enjoyable, but very short read. Hoping that the sophomore entry is “novel length” as promised by the author.
Kevin Ikenberry co writes this second book in Nick Thacker 's Gareth Red series. Fast paced this thriller never let's up and has the reader itching for more. Fortunately this has been guaranteed and I for one can't wait for their collaboration for book three.
This is a great way to gain insight into Gareth Red and what challenges he faced before his affiliation with Harvey Bennett. Well written and intriguing.
