Harvey and Joe Shuster Award-nominated writer Conor McCreery (Kill Shakespeare) and newcomer illustrator Mattia di Meo present a crossover for the ages in this mash-up of two of our favorite Cartoon Network shows! When a powerful new villain threatens to conquer Adventure Time’s Ooo, Princess Bubblegum sends Finn and Jake on a desperate quest to find The Power that can save the land—a power that Skips from Regular Show just happens to be hiding! Finn and Jake’s arrival only exacerbates an existing tension between Mordecai and Rigby, and the trip back to Ooo threatens to tear two sets of bros apart…forever. this was WAY BETTER than it had ANY RIGHT TO BE! one part moving story about friendship and forgiveness, one part interdimensional sci-fi epic, and like, twenty parts awesome punching and goofy comedy. The plot twist at the end was actually perfect, with smaller twists along the way that were totally unexpected and offer some fun insight into both universes. Plus the whole thing is littered with Easter eggs for folks who love the shows. I can wholeheartedly say I’d recommend this to any reader, any age. A fun and smart read all the way through.
This was sweet! I wasn't immediately stoked on it but towards the end I enjoyed it more. I think if you like Adventure Time you will enjoy this, but if you prefer Regular Show it might land a little flat.
3.75 Love seeing creatures of the Candy Kingdom though not clearly seeing the villain most of the time is annoying and it was confusing SOME panels are read across two pgs instead of vertically down each one. We flash between Adventure Time and Regular Show guys tasked with supervising a daycare. Regular Show’s art isn’t true to the show: bulky bodies w/ sharp whacky facial features.
When the Adv crew drops into the Reg world, their powers don’t work and the toddlers take off with the device to stop the evil math dude. So Skips reveals he knows where the magical Power keyboard is from ep 1. It’s cute they go to the club that fake Madonna is at to music battle her. In the vid game level, we see the pixelated devil face guy. Then Death on a motorcycle.
Wish we coulda seen more of the hot dog people but at least we see the Regs in Ooo. Manic Pixie Stick girls is a hilarious play on the concept. We do get some decent Ice King and Marcy allusions to the past before he was crazy and helping her in the apocalypse.
I don’t like the little rectangle boxes at the end of pages alluding to people out of frame talking in the next scene or sometimes skipping two scenes ahead. It’s confusing and less clever than when Archer does it with double meaning that apply to both scenes. It is a nice touch BMO’s dialogue is in a typed font. Not sure what the Toronto litigation references—did the show get sued?
I totally enjoy both cartoons Adventure Time & Regular Show and when I saw this graphic novel at my local library I had to check it out. The art work is great and captures the sense and characters of both shows. I can't place what was wrong storywise though and the only way I can describe it is thst it was average with some instances where I smiled to myself due to the humour. I can't saybthat I reccomend this book but the artist in me foubd it visually pleasing.
