Brian Thompson has lived through times of war and times of peace, times of scarcity and times of plenty, times of extreme adversity and times of great pleasure, but always times of adventure. In this book, Brian shows us how all things have worked together for ultimate good in his life, and how all can overcome adversity and enjoy true success.
He read English at Cambridge. Since 1973 he has written for a living as a radio and television playwright and a documentary film maker. He is also the author of several acclaimed biographies: A Monkey Amongst Crocodiles, Imperial Vanities and The Nightmare of a Victorian Bestseller.
I was given this book by the author, who is a CPA and lawyer, and lay minister residing in Cleveland, Ohio. Easily read over a few cups of coffee, this book is an endearing look at the twists and turns of one man's life ravaged early on by the trauma of the death of a loved one and war, and sustained by faith. It shows how the decisions we make have long-lasting consequences of which we're often unaware and the importance of divine wisdom in navigating those decisions. It also provides a first-hand glimpse into the effects of a child's environment on character development. Though not really the intent of the book, I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between childhood in the 40s and 50s and childhood today -- the expectations, responsibilities, measures of freedom given then would raise eyebrows today. In this book, you get a glimpse into life in England's (social systems, educational systems, and societal norms) and live in the United States, then and now.
