Little Cottage #1

The Little Cottage on the Hill

Rate this book
There’s blossom in the trees and daffodils as far as the eye can see. Maddie is looking forward to a fresh start in the countryside, but there’s just one little problem…

Following a scandal at her high-flying PR agency, twenty-six-year-old Maddie flees London to help promote what she thinks is going to be a luxurious holiday retreat in the countryside. Everything is riding on her making a success of this new job…

Yet when she arrives, Maddie is horrified to find a rundown old farm in a terrible state. The brooding and secretive owner, Seth, spent all his money on leasing the land when he fell in love with the beautiful, dishevelled farm cottages and the very romantic story behind them.

When Maddie discovers an old painting by the original owner’s wife, she unlocks the secret of the farm’s history and quickly realises she must start getting her hands dirty if this very special place is going to have any chance of survival. As she and Seth begin working together, the stunning view from the top of the hill is not the only thing that’s leaving her breathless…

After weeks of hard work the dream looks like it might become a reality, until a secret from Maddie’s past threatens to snatch it all away again. Can Maddie find a way to save the business and herself? Will she finally find a place to keep her heart within the crumbling walls of the little cottage on the hill?

Perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan, Lucy Diamond and Debbie Johnson who are looking to escape to the countryside and fall in love watching the seasons change.

Emma Davies once applied for her dream job in the following manner;

'I am a bestselling novelist currently masquerading as a thirty something mother of three.' Well she's now a forty something mother of three, and is working on the rest.

By day she's a finance manager and looks at numbers a lot of the time, but by night she gets to use actual words and practices putting them together into sentences. Her twitter bio says she loves her family, her job, reading, writing, singing loudly in the car, and Pringles, so that must be true then.

Well now I want to go visit this little cottage on the hill, it certainly was charming! This book was a fun easy read but definitely light on the romance.....

The characters in this book were people you’d want to meet, maybe when on vacation at this little cottage.... however as likable as they were, they weren’t as well developed as I would have liked.... especially Seth and Maddie the two main characters.... the book starts out rather abruptly almost like the prologue was left out.... I just would’ve appreciated more of a backstory on both of them....

Maddie fled her high-pressure London job and headed to the country to help restore Joy’s Acre.... Seth is the owner and Maddie and he have very different ideas for the renovation.... it was fun watching these two along with Clara, Trixie, and Thomas, reach some agreement on the renovation.... and I learned a lot about roof Thatching!(Something I hope I never need to put into practice)

This was a fun easy read perfect for a little getaway....

*** i’d like to thank the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book ***

PS: I had a Twitter conversation with the author and she told me this is a part of a four book series a book for every season! I personally am looking forward to getting to know these characters better!

The Little Cottage on the Hill by Emma Davies is the perfect example of a book that makes me find it hard to toss one to the side without finishing. This little romance read started off a bit rough in my opinion but wound up being a nice little story.

In the beginning of the book readers are dropped in on Maddie arriving at the farm and meeting Seth but there wasn’t a lot of lead in even giving readers the hint as to why Maddie is even there. Now for those like myself that read a synopsis deciding to read a book but having a bit of time pass before picking that title back up to actually read it you just might have forgotten what the story should be.

As Maddie and Seth first meet in the book I’d have to say that quite honestly neither were coming off as likable at all either. Perhaps that just may have been my frustration of wondering what was happening too but it was definitely a rocky start for the story for me as I mentioned.

However, being one that doesn’t like to give up one a book all too often I kept on reading and slowly the author began to unravel the mysteries that had plagued me at the beginning. As the story moves on it actually becomes quite engaging and a rather nice tale as Maggie and Seth end up working side by side to restore the property. By the end of this book I was actually kind of sad to be leaving these characters and the countryside. So in the end I’d give this title 3.5 stars as it was definitely worth the read once it got going.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

5☆ A  Charming & Heartwarming Read

The Little Cottage on the Hill is a beautifully Enchanting read. It had Humour, passion, emotion, friendships, new beginnings.

From the first few pages of reading this book I was captivated and knew it was going to be a special read.

Maddie has given up her life in London to start a new venture. She has arrived at Seth's Cottages in order to generate money and make them a sucess.

However the start doesn't quiet go according to plan.
You see Seth is used to living on his own. He doesn't want Maddie there poking her nose in.

You see what Seth failed to leave out was the actual state of the cottages. They hadn't been finished. No way was they of luxury finesse that Maddie was led to believe. She is horrified. But that is not going to stop her making the Cottages a roaring success.

She just has to convince Seth!
Easier said than done!

I loved Maddie's and Seth's relationship it was full of sarcastic banter yet deep down you could feel a subtle hint of softness and Romance.

I loved all the quirky characters that Maddie met. They just added to the Charm of the book.

The Little Cottage on the Hill  is a beautiful Romantic read. I fell in love with the Characters and the Charm of the Cottages. This is certainly one to watch out for. I really hope there will be a second book.

Thank you to Bookouture for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

So much for first impressions.

A charming, instantly familiar "city vs. country" trope featuring designer-chic Maddie who thinks a new job in the English countryside will become her redemption from a recent London scandal.

But when redevelopment of homey Joy's Acre doesn't end up being her dream job, Maddie has to determine if her fabulous designs for starting over again were just an illusion.

Davies writes a slow-burning storyline where romance takes a back seat to big secrets, family drama, wardrobe changes, and more than you ever really wanted to know about roof thatching.

It's an earnest and sincere tale about two people not falling into bed with each other, but genuinely learning to respect and - later, much later - falling in love.

A true uplifting and romantic page turner. A delightful cast of characters that will have you rooting for the underdogs. Life may not always be as you expect it to be but it sometimes turns out in an unexpected way that is much better than you expected. This was full of fun, laughs, emotion and just when you thought it had a sad ending an unexpected twist comes along and all is right again. Charming, you will want to read this a second time for the good feeling it'll give you!

This is my second book by this author and so pleased I have found her books as they are such excellent reads. Full of fun and finding out who you really are and starting over again and romance and finding new friends and has you hooked from the first page and has you wanting to know what will happen next. Great book to curl up and enjoy as such an amazing read. Has you laughing crying and humour and heartwarming as well loved it so much.
Maddie has lost her high flying job in London and needs to start again so decides to move to the countryside to start working for someone called Seth but the job isn't what she ought is was going to be and she's not sure she can stay but while leaving she crashes her car and Seth rescues her and takes her back. While she working hard with Seth she finds new friends but are they all hiding different secrets can they share them. While working Maddie starts unlocking the history of the farms original owner and she finds a painting that belongs to her and she realises she has to work hard to get this all off the ground can she do it and be happy and find her true self again and help Seth find himself as well.
A great read highly recommend anyone reading this and such a quick read to.

It wasn’t particularly bad but I can’t justify more than two stars because of the lack of any wow factor. I guess I could say the simplicity of it was a nice palate cleanser but it was so simple it was on the verge of boring and may have crossed over that line a couple times.

I always read an Emma Davies novel, when life is difficult or when I lose my mojo for reading. And her books always make me find the rainbow in the dark clouds. Every book of hers is saved for those special times. And thus I began reading this book...

And lo and behold, I wasn't disappointed. This book brought me right up from the doldrums of life and gave me an energy boost, just by reading about Maddie and Seth.

Maddie, a publicist, applies for promoting Joy's Acres, what she thinks to be an upcoming ultra swank holiday retreat, but alas, finds it to be a rundown farm barely holding on, in need of complete renovation, with Seth at the helm of the farm.

The story progresses with the discovery of a painting, history of the farm revealed, with more people joining to restore the farm, and romance brewing between Maddie and Seth. I love the way the author Emma Davies, makes the pages flow.

I found all the characters Clara, Trixie, and Tom utterly captivating. The farm and its rolling hills, the beauty of nature, and roof thatching are quite well described. Initially, Maddie (Madeleine) comes off as standoffish, but as the story progresses, she becomes warm, hard-working, and understanding, and her inner pleasure at being and working to promote the farm, to restore it to its former glory makes this book a delight to read.

The only part I didn't like or understand is Agatha and Natalie's role, I felt that they are not well-developed.

The Little Cottage on the Hill is a fabulous feel-good, happy book, with amazing descriptions of nature, loving companionship of quirky characters, where love, warmth, and smiles abound even with life's difficult decisions around.

It is said A thing of beauty is a joy forever, but words of joy written by Emma is a beauty forever.

The premise here was confusing at best. Book opens with Madeline driving to the countryside, the reader is not informed why or where she is going. Then she randomly arrives at a hidden rundown cottage. We still don't know why at this point. Needs to be fleshed out more.

I felt the story just did not read well. It was all over the place in terms of plot and character development. Personally I did not find any of the characters likable and found it annoying how one character kept reiterating how odd/strange she is because she has pink hair. Not exactly nonconformist these days.

Just couldn't connect with this book I guess. The ending was a big wtf.

My copy was provided by NetGalley for review, all opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved The Little Cottage on the Hill. It was everything I wanted in a contemporary romance novel, and more. If you are like me (i.e. you tend to go for women's fiction set in idyllic villages as opposed to big bustling cities), you are going to love it.

The writing is very solid, and there is a remarkable amount of character development. Of course, that also means that the main character isn't exactly likeable when she is first introduced, so be prepared for that. However, I personally enjoy redemption arcs in books, and this one was particularly well-done.

Also, as the cover suggests, this is a perfect spring read. There are a lot of beautiful descriptions of gardening, which I loved.

Simply wonderful.

Buona lettura.

The Little Cottage On The Hill is the first book in The Little Cottage Series. What a great start to a series as well. If like me you love seeing a building transformation then you will love this book. Don't get me wrong the actual physical work on the farm is kept quite low key and focuses on the characters so we really get to know them better, but the parts to do with giving the barn and the cottages a make over had so many visions running through my head. I loved both Maddie's and Seth's ideas.

There is only a small cast of characters in the story and I enjoyed getting to know each one better. They are all really great, well apart from Agatha but the least said about her the better, even the cat I was totally taken with by the end of the story!

Whilst there is a hint of romance throughout the story, for me it was more about friendships and bonds as well as setting up what looks to be a fabulous series. There is so much potential for this series and I am now desperate to read the next book in the series.

The Little Cottage On The Hill is a fabulous start to a captivating series. The author totally drew me in and was enchanted by the wonderful setting and lovely characters. I totally lost myself into the story and didn't want to come out of it. Such a great read.

I absolutely adored this book and really hope that we might find a series of books set around the Little Cottage on the Hill. Maddie is escaping from her high flying job in London under a cloud. She has agreed to project manage a renovation of a farmhouse complex. She comes with modern ideas and meets resistance from Seth who wants everything done with a romantic vision.
We meet the wonderful cast of characters that soon feel like long lost friends. Maddie comes to realise that Seth has surrounded himself with people who share his vision. His gardener works tirelessly and we wonder what background they have together. The thatcher also seems to have a close connection and the history of thatching was fascinating.
As the views from the Hill weave their magic around Maddie she comes to see how the project needs to go. I loved the family history that unravels as we go along and adds to the whole story. I loved the whole feeling around the book. I felt like I was unpacking boxes in the farmhouse alongside them and could picture the seed catalogues and how they will set a theme for the cottages.
The romance in the book is sweet and I think we have scope for more romances in future books (please!). I could imagine books around each cottage as they become ready - with the first set around the person who books Gardeners Cottage. I wasn't really ready to let the characters go- always a sign of a book I totally fell in love with!

Another glorious story from Emma Davies, whose books are going up and up my need to read as soon as I get them list with each new book.

Admittedly I did wonder at the opening of the book whether I had perhaps read too many books in the genre as it did feel quite familiar to me, but once you get into the nuts and bolts of the characters, the plot and the writing, it was a really heartwarming story.

Like Maddie was, I wa drawn to this part of the Shropshire countryside and the story of the cottages and area. I loved all of Maddie's visions for the place, from the wildly inappropriate ones with her London brain still in gear, to things more inline with Seth's vision for the place once she finally understands what he is trying to achieve.

One of the more surprising things I learnt from this book was all about thatching, which is unfortunately a dying craft, but one explained in a lot of detail. It really was quite interesting to think about how many years of history the straw must be able to contain.

I also loved Clara and her fierce protectiveness of Seth, although I could fully understand it once you are privy to their rather extraordinary background. Generally I loved all the main characters of this book and their sense of family despite none of them being related.

The Little Cottage on the Hill is a charming story, that I enjoyed reading every second of, but I can't help but hope that this ins't the last we have seen of Maddie.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This book was sadly disappointing for me. It wasn't so bad that I would DNF it, but I also definitely won't read any further books of the series.

What I liked:
- The side characters were well fleshed out (Clara and Trixie mostly) and the animals too had their own lovely personalities.
- The author does describe the landscape in a nice way that is easy to picture.

What I didn't like:
- Personally, I don't enjoy when a character is made to be unlikable just so there's a substantial development of character possible. I prefer a more subtle development, rather than 180 turns like this.
- I found neither Seth nor Maddie very likable and when I don't like the protagonists, I automatically care less for what happens to them or what the book generally is about.
- For me, there was no attraction tangible between Seth and Maddie until almost the very end.
- The ending made little sense to me. Up to that point this book was headed for 3 stars for me, but for a business-savy woman, Maddie did not act in a logical way.
- Up to the halfway point the book felt tightly structured and quite well-paced, but after that it felt like nothing other than the first kiss, the finding of the painting and the first booking happened. That's not a lot to happen in about 150 pages.

Sadly, this novel did not fulfill the promise of being a feel-good novel for me.

You'd think that people would've had enough of silly love songs
I look around me, and I see it isn't so
Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs

If one could somehow sub in romance novels for McCartney's love songs, it just might fit this cozy little novel about damaged people who somehow come together to form lasting friendships on the farm Joy's Acre.

Maddie, an urbane Londoner who is PR and marketing professional arrives at Joy's Acre in Shropshire expecting something quite different than what she finds. Seth the owner has a vision, but seems unable to formulate it or express it coherently. They both have secrets.

This is a book about healing and love, but it is also about friendship and loyalty because you have to add, Clara, Tom and Trixie into the mix as well

Tucked into a corner in Shropshire, the opportunity for Madeline Porter to reclaim her career and succeed at marketing and managing a new and growing corporate retreat site are just what she needs. After a disastrous event in London, and leaving her firm under a cloud, the unexpected and wholly welcome chance to start anew, even in this remote area, is welcome. Yet, the more she discovers, the more the situation becomes fraught with tensions, secrets and an owner who appears to dislike her and her ideas just on principle. No mobile signal, horrible broadband, dogs, dust, dirt, ramshackle outbuildings and a garden that seems to have taken over – her linen and power suits are just not made for this.

Seth, the owner and his crew: Clara the gardener and Tom the thatcher are a tight group – almost secretive in their conversations and Maddie always feels a bit out of the circle. It’s obvious that their friendships are solid, and Maddie thinks that there is something there between Clara and Seth – despite the rather confusing statements from Clara that ‘she owes Seth everything”. When he won’t explain things to her, and the people around him fob her off with a “he’ll have to tell you”, she’s torn between wanting to ‘fit in” and deciding that this isn’t the project for her. And then, slowly she starts to see Seth’s vision for Joy’s Acre, and buoyed up by an off-the-cuff mushrooms on toast and latte, a wi-fi connection and a most unusual barmaid, she’s invigorated and starts to plan. Yes, her ideas are too ‘London’ and far from the vision Seth has, and she’s not happy that every idea she has is shut down, but when she understands (after far too much time in my opinion) the story of Joy’s Acres, the unique history of the farm and repeated ‘we’re meant to be here as different as we all are’ comments from the others all starts to give her a new vision, and the group as a whole some thoughts of how things might be……

Oh the angst and secrets are rife in this one: from Maddie’s own as she left London as a pariah and this job is her ‘chance’ to revise her reputation to the many secrets and sorrows on Seth’s shoulders and his ongoing tug of war with Agatha, a bull-terrier of a woman who is financing the renovations, interested in a return on her money and seemingly nothing else. Clara, the beautiful and talented gardener and her obvious attachment to Seth, and Tom the thatcher, with one foot in the tradition and his handwork, another in the world of bands, music, women and pubs. Lastly there is Trixie, the barmaid who combines a forthright approach to life with a can-do attitude that asks for little more than respect and freedom, and returns so much more. When you add in Bonnie and Clyde, two very friendly and active dogs, Rumpus a marmalade cat with an attachment to Maddie that is unusual (for him) and a budget that is non-existent after Agatha’s heavy-handed demands that aren’t met – they are up against it with just a few weeks to finish one of the cottages and open for business.

Not unlike the first I’d read from Davies (Lucy’s Book Club for the Lost and Found) there is a solid sense of family and community here: in this, the community becomes the four working on the farm, trying to honor it’s unique history as a place of refuge, care and beauty for those who may need it most. Seth’s overwhelming need to make a difference in an effort to assuage guilt, have brought them together: his connection with Clara and his sudden disappearance for a trip to London just as things are moving forward just add more layers to the past and present sense of ‘difference’ that this farm will make for everyone who works there. Solid characters, moments of laughter, poignancy and sadness all surround the farm and the people who are inhabiting and restoring the property, each emotion works to enhance and enlighten them all, but especially Maddie as she comes to feel as if Joy’s Acre, and those who came before, have welcomed her into this little piece of paradise. A lovely story that is engaging, heartwarming and perfect for an escape.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Maddie thinks she's found the perfect new job. She's been hired to promote a luxurious countryside holiday retreat. However, when she arrives at Joy's Acre she discovers the place is in complete disrepair. Seth, the owner of the cottages, doesn't want to turn his farm into a place that attracts rich business people. Instead he wants to bring it back in its original old fashioned state, which means they don't see eye to eye at all. Maddie can't go back to London, but Joy's Acre is also not what she expected, what should she do now?

Maddie and Seth are trying to find common ground, but that isn't easy when there are so many things he's keeping from her. They might share a house, but Seth isn't willing to let Maddie in, even if it has an effect on the job she's being hired to do. Just when things start to look up, Maddie's past threatens to make life difficult for her once more and Maddie doesn't know if she can face the consequences. What will happen to her once the reason why she left London comes out?

The Little Cottage on the Hill is a beautiful story about grief, love, secrets and dreams. Maddie is stressed and stiff. She can use some loosening up. She's also incredibly sweet and her good heart and caring nature are making it impossible to walk away from a daunting project. Seth is mysterious. He can be moody, but he's also kind and he has plenty of hidden depths that are making him really interesting to read about. I loved the tension between them and was curious to find out where it would lead. There's quite a bit of chemistry, but also a lot of baggage, which definitely makes the story interesting.

The Little Cottage on the Hill is a wonderful heartwarming story. I immediately fell in love with Joy's Acre, it's such a magical place. Emma Davies skillfully makes the countryside come to life with vivid descriptions of both the gorgeous surroundings and the quirky atmosphere. I was mesmerized by the property, its potential and the amazing community spirit. The Little Cottage on the Hill is a fantastic feelgood book. It's a story that put a big smile on my face, I love it when a story fills me with so much joy and highly recommend this charming dazzling book.

2,5 🌟

Eigentlich eine nette Geschichte für zwischendrin. Aber mir fehlte es komplett an Emotionen und nicht ein Funke hat hier gesprüht.
Das Hörbuch wurde aber gut vorgetragen.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the Publisher, Bookouture for this copy, given in exchange for an honest review.  Also thank you to Kim from Bookouture for organising the Blog Tour.

26 year old Madeline Porter leaves London following a scandal in her previous job.  She has managed to get herself a job redeveloping a rundown farm and farm cottages into a luxury holiday retreat in the country.  It’s a joint venture between the current owner Natalie and Seth who leases the land – Natalie is in London, but has her aunt Agatha overseeing the work and Seth lives at the farm.  Seth’s view on what should be done with the cottages don’t really match with the high-end luxury work which Madeline has been briefed on.  When Madeline arrives and finds the farm, Joy’s Acre, in a very ramshackle condition, she realises that she will need to put a lot of work into this project to get it up to scratch.  She also finds she has her work cut out with Seth who has a different vision with how he wants the farm to end up.  Looking into the farm’s history, Madeline finds an old painting, which had been done by the original owner’s wife, and who the farm was named after.  But just when she thinks she has worked out what to do with the farm, a secret from her past comes back and threatens to stop the whole project completely.

My second Emma Davies book.  For information this book is based in the UK, mainly in the Shropshire area.  A delightful easy read introducing us to the classy Madeline Porter.  I loved Madeline’s character when she first turned up at Joy’s Acre.  She is obviously a city girl and has no clue how to behave, dress and even drive in the country.  I did laugh at the visions of her tiny little ‘pride and joy’ sports car navigating the twisty country roads surrounded by high hedges.  Obviously as the book moves on, she becomes more used to the area and it’s nice to see her attitudes to things change.  I did feel sorry for Seth being coerced into doing the farm up in a way that he just didn’t believe in and you are just keeping everything crossed that the redevelopment is done in a way to retain the character of the original farm.

It’s a funny and heart-warming story, which makes you feel sad in parts and then lifts you up again with laughter in others.  An interesting story which held my attention, and piqued my imagination with pretty country cottages, rolling meadows and little villages.  Well recommended!

I love this author's books so when I saw that she had a new book coming out I was really keen to get my hands on it - it has a gorgeous cover and after reading the blurb I knew it was going to be a book that I was going to enjoy having read some of Emma's other books- well I can tell you I wasn't disappointed at all and have given the book 5 stars!!

I love a good chick lit/romance book and Emma's books have always been some of my go to reads in that genre - this one has everything I need to brighten my day - the plot was great, I loved the characters and the setting and the whole thing just flowed really well.

It is such an easy read that you can easily lose yourself in the story and be taken away to join Maddie in the story - I personally loved it and it is definitely a book that I am going to be recommending!

I’m a huge fan of all Emma Davies books, and this did not disappoint whatsoever!
Cottage on the Hill is a feel-good read, and is a reminder that things aren’t always how they seem, particularly on first impressions. I loved the character transformations and the sense of teamwork and friendship we are shown throughout. You won’t be able to stop the occasional tear or smile that sneaks on your face while reading. There is something for everyone including a bit of historical fiction. Recommended!

**Many thanks to NetGalley, Emma Davies, and Bookouture for an ARC to read and honestly review**

This was quite the cute book. I wish I could say more, but there isn't much to say. It's really light... On everything. The romance, the characters, everything. Although, it does make you feel good and since I felt good at the end I rated it 3.

It's quite short and the romance develops, well, it doesn't really. I was amazed that there was even romance. Everything is glossed over real quick but well, it's not so bad.

And that's mainly all I can say about this book. It's not so bad. I got entertained and wasn't able to put it down, for some reason I really cannot grasp, but it's nice to grab if you're in a slump and don't want to dwell on a convoluted plot.
