Michelle McNamara, late wife of the TV comic, Patton Oswald, was a woman obsessed. Creator of a true-crime website, she was particularly obsessed with identifying the man she came to call The Golden State Killer, a serial rapist/murderer who operated in California, and frustrated police for forty years. Her book about the case, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, was completed after her death of an undiagnosed heart condition—she died before the perpetrator, now in his 70s, was identified and arrested.
Summary & Analysis of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for The Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara from ZipReads is a comprehensive look at the book, which demonstrates that the author was as obsessed as the suspect she tried so hard to find. This review can be read in less than twenty minutes and will give you a good sense of a complicated book that moves back and forth in time, and is packed with details, not only those that she was able to discover about the killer, but the thoughts and words of the victims in the days leading up to the crimes.
This is an excellent way to get a sense of a book before buying it, a sort of book buyer’s Cliff Notes, and is definitely worth the investment. I give it four and a half stars.
