“Aww, Darling, hasn’t anyone already let you in on the secret that life isn’t fair ?

“Don’t turn yourself into a monster, brother.

Oh my gosh I loved this too!
Scarlett is now taken into the noght/winter court where a new King is infatuated with her and her ability but Raith and Cade dont really want to share her. Her ability matched with the faes power and relms is beautiful and I love it!
Also that ending Raiths mother! Goodness gracious this series is just wonderful and everyone needs to read it... now.

The writing is beautiful and descriptive and the magic is new and interesting. The characters are fun and intriguing. I loved it.

Total junk food reads but I'm loving it.
These books are really fast and easy to read. The plot has moved into more political territory instead of romantic and the short length keeps me from getting bored. Overall these are lots of fun.

I really enjoyed this book. It was cool learning more about the fae world and how their magic works. I loved Scarlet's struggle to master her new abilities.

I also enjoyed learning more about other characters. I would have loved to see more of Raith. He's probably my favorite character at this point, and there was so little of him. But I loved Sage, and I can't wait to see more of her in future books.

I'm also very interested to see where Scarlett and Ashleigh's relationship goes in the next book.

This was a great fae read. :)

Question: "How far will Scarlett go to save someone she loves?"
Answer: Not very far.

We love good LGBT+ representatio- Oh, wait.
“Oh, come on. I’ve already seen you naked.”
“Yes, well, I was unconscious then.”
Why did it bother him so much? It wasn’t like him to care about something as mundane as nudity. He would have jumped at the chance for an attractive woman to want to see him naked, though he’d have preferred her been into guys, not girls. But he had plenty of three-some fantasies that Sage would fit into perfectly.

I don't want it to end!

Gah! Book 2 was even better than book 1! I hated to see it end. There is still so much to figure out for Scarlett. Fingers crossed the next book comes out soon!

Blog | Twitter | Instagram | As a note, a copy of this novel was sent to me by the author. This does not effect my opinions in any way.

Review also found here.

I'm going to start my review of the second installment of Nissa Leder's Whims of Fae series the very same way I began my review of its predecessor: Oh. My. God. It's not a secret that I adored the introduction to this world, The Two Princes of Summer, nor should it come as a shock to anyone that Prisoner of Darkness was at the top of my most anticipated reads. I was allured by Leder's prose instantly--and soon, I became entirely lost in the beauty of this world she has created. Without a doubt, Nissa Leder is an author readers should be looking out for in the future. And Whims of Fae is shaping up to be one of the very best, and underappreciated, YA releases in recent memory.

Much like with The Two Princes of Summer, Prisoner of Darkness had me bewitched from the very first chapter. There was so much that happened through the course of the first book that my heart was thudding in anticipation for what came next in the lives of Scarlett, Raith, Cade and Kaelam. After that killer ending to the previous book, I was left in a pool of emotions and excitement.

Now that a small fraction of time has passed since Scarlett's stay in Faerie, and the series of events that transpired and changed her life forever have passed, there are so many questions to be answered. Scarlett is no longer a mere mortal, though she is back to the mortal realm--for now. Her relationship with her sister is repairing itself. Underneath the surface, more has changed for Scarlett than just her mortality; her efforts to keep her powers under wraps, the relationships she shared with Cade and Raith.

In many ways, we see her first living in the aftermath of her adventures elsewhere. You don't so easily recover from your entire world changing. Scarlett has gone through many things that have clearly left their mark on her. But, that is what happens when you've been changed to a Fae and betrayed (left for dead) by the boy who brought you there to begin with.

Still, for her, there were many ups to contrast against the downs when it comes to her experiences--the relationship she holds with Raith, her chance to truly connect with her sister in the way siblings should, grasping onto a newfound strength. Scarlett returns to the mortal realm as a new person and it's a delight to watch the development she has faced in the span of two books.

Now, as to not spoil readers when it comes to all the plot twists and turns that Prisoner of Darkness possesses, I'll highlight some of my personal favourites from the book:

-Kaelam. Ah, call me a sucker but I love Kaelam and his arrogance and the banter he has with Scarlett. And, well, everyone. Not only is he exceptionally magnetic (see: his powers and good looks) he is a deeply intriguing character. Similar to characters like Morpheus from Splintered and Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses, he adds that extra depth to the plot as well as a level of moral grayness. You never quite know what to expect from him, even as the narration centers around him and his thoughts. A lot of what we learn about Kaelam in Prisoner of Darkness is very, very appealing because he is a different kind of character when compared to everyone else. I'm curious by him, his feelings and his family (in particular, his sister Aria) and court. You kind of can't help it.
-The exploration of the other courts. A majority of this novel takes place in the Unseelie Court and I'm really keen on Leder's take on everything. Once again, her world-building is fantastic and tangles fantasy elements with sprinkles of our world tossed in for good measure. We see more interactions between Faerie Courts and frankly, it's fantastic. It makes you want to know more about this world, its tensions, its history. All the court drama! All of it. We see some new characters, some peculiar alliances, and the fights that ensue, new settings, etc etc. I liked that the world is continuing to expand for us.
-Raith and Scarlett's relationship. In fairness, there aren't as many scenes between these two as I would like. That's not a problem at all, because what we do get--the strength of their bond, their (shall we say) fondness of one another sizzles across the pages. I adore these two. So. Freaking. Much.
-ALL THE SCARLETT AND KAELAM SCENES. I may ship the heck out of Raith and Scarlett but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the tension between these two. Boy, is there A LOT OF TENSION between them. A lot. It spices things up. In a way, I ship Scarlett and Kaelam with many. I can't help it, they're so likable?! They have this sort of connection that just hits you across the face even when things are less than desirable. It's not just Kaelam's powers, either. Plus, I liked that he took her under his wings when it came to mastering her new-powers.
-I actually enjoyed the tension between Scarlett/Kaelam and Cade/Poppy. I didn't think I would. I am not 100% what to think about where this may go, but the angst is glorious. Just fun, you know? In a stressful, "OH MY GOD!" kind of way. Especially one particular scene--ahem, a fight scene. A literal fight scene. Phew.
-The way that Cade and Raith's fight for power ended in the previous book and how it carries over to this one. Cade really messed up in the way that he allowed his mother and ambitions to get underneath his skin. You could tell that he is very conflicted and torn between right and wrong and you can't help but wonder if he'll ever truly learn his lesson. We see that struggle continue for one reason or another.
-Although it was heartbreaking, I really appreciated the parallels and disappointment that came with one choice that Kaelam makes in regards to keeping Scarlett on his side. Let's just say, he should have known better--but those in his position often can't afford the luxury of trust. So, it does get messy for a time. I am very concerned about the aftermath of it all.
-Scarlett's powers, potential bloodline and continued growth. Deep down, she still is the Scarlett we know and love. Her changes are subtle but still pack a serious punch. I can't wait to see more of her.
-Raith and the search for the truth about his mother. I didn't see any of it coming. I'll just leave it at that because, again, spoilers. I loved how determined he is and that we see this softer side to him.
- Her role is small but still pretty prominent, but I'm loving Sage so far. I need more of her.

In short: Prisoner of Darkness was FANTASTIC. It delivered just the right amounts of suspense, action, romance and fantasy--it is perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare, A.G. Howard and Sarah J. Maas. If you enjoyed The Two Princes of Summer, you should prepare yourself for this next installment because it blows that one out of the water. Nissa Leder does it again!

I do feel like the general story-telling and character development is better than the first book, but somehow, the pay-offs were much less satisfying. I was hoping to get more info on the magic system along with the worldbuilding, but the magic seems to have even fewer limitations now. I like that each individual has different special abilities and the concepts behind how they replenish their magic, but there seem to be no rules about how/when they can use magic. There were several moments where I was surprised that someone used magic so publicly but NO ONE NOTICED that it was magic! In a world like this, the average fae should be able to tell the different between being tripped physically and magically or at least deduce as much based on the presence of magic when it happened.

All of the action is very out of place. It feels very tacked on for the sake of intrigue rather than feeling like an integral part of their world like we have to be told that it is. Not to mention, in this book, we are introduced to magical/mental battles, and all I can imagine is watching one of these battles from a third-person perspective and just seeing two people staring intently at each other, randomly flinching in pain, and occasionally someone starts screaming and going crazy. It's very discombobulating.

My impression is that the majority of this series is going to be Scarlett being passed around between various boys until she finally feels empowered enough to DO something with herself.

5 Stars

“She who is one of many will hold the power. Betray her, and rain will fall. Help her, and the sun will rise again.”

**Updated Review: The author has informed me that the edition I read was unedited. Since the typos were my main complaint, I have decided to bump my rating up to 5 stars.**

This series is so fun. In my review of Two Princes of Summer, I said it is one of those rare gems on KindleUnlimited and this holds true. I wish I could give this book five stars, but there were a lot of typos. Most of them were pretty minor, but a couple were very obvious. Regardless, the plot was fast paced and the characters were entertaining. I was really happy to see a badass lesbian fae. I want a whole book about Sage. I loved seeing fae Scarlett. I thought the author did a fantastic job of differentiating her from mortal Scarlett. Kaelem was the star of this book though. I did find him to be a little bit too similar to Rhysand, but honestly, I don't care. I hope we get to see a lot of him in book three.

I have decided that I will be writing an overall series review. So stay tuned for that! Planning on reading book three, Whims of Fate by the end of the week.

((ALSO, GUYS, THE AUTHOR HAS PET POISON DART FROGS!!! I think that is the coolest thing ever.))

After the events of book one, Scarlett is getting used to being a Fae in the mortal world. She's working on developing her relationship with her sister Ashleigh and her friends, but she can't seem to control her new powers. That's when Kaelem shows up and offers to help her learn, if she'll accompany him back to the Fae world and helps him.

Ahhh this series just keeps hooking me in! So my ships shifted slightly. In the first book I liked Scarlett and together, but in this book I really liked her with .

Loved it and will definitely be continuing on in this series!

Wow. I thought the first book was good, but then there was this!!
Where do I start? The story itself is amazing and hooks you in from the beginning, (I want the next book!) and the characters are so loveable! Ugh, I know this review sucks, but this book DEFINITELY does not, so I definitely recommend it!

I started out actually really disliking Scarlett. It wasn’t until The Winter Court that I started liking her again. And have also come to like Kaelem. The farther I read into the series the more interested I’m in. Well done.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is an improvement over book one! More world building and expansion of plot threads. I'm happy that that's the trend. I still feel like the story is very simple and that this installment felt much more like a slice of the story than something that requires its own book (basically a few tiny things are accomplished and a few things are added to the general "seasonal courts are going to go up against the seelie and unseelie courts for equal power" plot that's happening so far), but it was an improvement from the last book because it had more time to develop things. I feel like the next few books will be a lot more building up of characters and what not.

I'm also starting to doubt if Raith will be the one Scarlett ends up with. I feel like this is kind of a ACOTAR situation where Raith seems like he'll be it at first and then the dark faerie king will end up being the one she truly wants to be with. At least if that's the case then Kaelum and Scarlett will have had a whole book, or not more, to interact and develop a relationship.

I read someone say this series was "the dollar store ACOTAR series" and I am seeing a few clear areas that had to have been inspired from that series. It has a much more simplistic plot and writing style, plus this doesn't have as nice of an editing job, though I will say overall that the general idea of faeries fighting each other for supremacy and what not isn't exactly an original idea in any faerie story, so it's kind of hard for most faerie stories (and even fantasy stories) to avoid that sort of plot.

Raith has returned Scarlett to the human realm, to her hometown of Silver Creek after the battle between brothers for the Summer Crown. She has noticed some changes after returning; firstly, her sister Ashleigh and her have improved their relationship, secondly - her powers are increasing after taking the pill that Kaelem gave her, making her no longer human but fully fae. Raith has decided to leave Scarlett during this time to chase down some information about his mother – the bread crumb trail provided to him by Kaelem. Then come the Fates – a trio of sisters who tell the future of the Fae world, harbingers of mostly bad news. It seems that this time their news involves someone interesting – someone that used to be human. This provokes Kaelem to go to Scarlett and offer her assistance in learning how to harness her powers, so that they can be contained and not harm anyone; at least, that’s what he says. Kaelem has his own hidden motives – involving the Ice Court and a mirror.

This continuation of the Whims of Fae series also falls into speculative fiction – specifically fantasy fiction. It is set in the same imaginary realm without any specific real-world locations, events, or people. We get some more insight on the magic that has been shown in the first book, more supernatural elements, and magical creatures. I would say that this book continues to incorporate elements of romance, blending it into the romantasy subgenre. It focuses less on the idea of a love triangle trope – although it is still implied. This focuses on the enemies to lover’s trope. This book deals with themes of familial relationships, fate, and friendships.

I liked this book much better than the first one. I think that the characters showed some growth and development by the end of the book, something that was lacking in the first book. I also appreciated the introduction of new characters with their own problems, intertwined with our current characters and their problems. The history that is being uncovered between the characters throughout this book was also enjoyable. I feel like there is still some world building that can be improved on – we were able to see some insight with the time spent in Kaelem’s realm, the Unseelie Court. The training sessions, I feel, were good – they allowed for some simple explanations of the magic. However, we are still unsure how most of the magic works for other realms or what their powers are. This obviously feels like it will be improved in the later installments due to story development and how it is all unfolding. Overall, this felt more polished than the first book, it improved upon itself. This was an easy read at 201 pages; I really devoured it. It was action from the start. I would recommend this to readers that enjoy fantasy, magic, the fae, action, and just a touch of romance. I would not really recommend to readers under 16 – there are some scenes, while not sexually explicit or graphic, that are not subtle or completely innocent.

By Nissa Leder
Narrator Jesse Vilinsky

This is Book Two of the Whims of Fae series. Book one was an introduction to the Summer Court and it's two princes. This book takes us into the UnSeelie Night Court. Kalem, the Night King, agrees to teach Scarlett how to use magic but he has some ulterior motives.

Overall, I like the series so far. These books aren't terribly original, but if you're in need of some Fae Fantasy it will get you over the hump. The books aren't so serious that you finish feeling depressed nor are they that annoying immature tone. The author has a good mix to pull in both younger and mature audiences.

There are some additional characters added and I think they will have a good impact on how the series develops.

Unfortunately for me, the Bad-Boy Fae really isn't that Bad. Just another misunderstood young ruler. (You'll have to read to see what I mean.)

My annoyonce:

I HATE when characters just conveniently get a new power at the last minute. Example - "She couldn't explain how she knew what to do, but as if it were as simply as breathing she..." used this new power. I dont want to spoil what the power is going to be but just know it comes out of no where. 😒 Isn't that convenient... she gets a new superpower just as she is about to be beaten.

I dont understand why these "Kings" and "Queens" of the Fairie court are so weak. There is nothing that the author gives or describes about them that makes them seem powerful. They aren't anymore powerful than the other Fae the encounter through the series. On top of that, the two summer kings have never had any formal combat training until two weeks before their battle. Three of the Five courts are ruled by individuals in their early 20s. For a species that are potentially immortal that's like giving the crown to a toddler.

The books are quick reads/listens. Only about 5 to 6 hours long. For me that's extremely short when books I normal listen to are about 12 hours long.

The narrator is Jesse Vilinsky and she does well.

3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

This took everything that was good about the first book and made it better, and got rid of most of the questionable things.
The characters are still complex and interesting, which I love. The plot was not something I have really seen before, and I enjoyed it. It still uses tropes that are somewhat worn out and breathes new life into them.
I forgot to say this in my review of the first book, but this came up in this book too— there are a few times when a character will understand something that I don't remember having been explained to them, or accept new knowledge too easily. Another thing that bugged me is that . (I marked that as a spoiler just in case, but it's not really a spoiler).
As a gay woman, I cannot ignore the representation in this book. Here's what I have to say about it. One, I appreciated it, and I am excited to hopefully ship this character with someone (although I'm sad it can't be Poppy, apparently). At the same time, just throwing in a minor character that happens to be lesbian without ever having a lesbian scene feels a bit like pandering, especially since I keep seeing this book on LGBTQ+ book lists. I don't know. This is a lot more than most books have, but I hope there is more in the next book.

Thank god this was better than the first book. Don't get me wrong, it definitely wasn't anything to rave about but I didn't want to scream at this story as much as the first, there were still a lot of facepalm moments and ete rolling however.

The writing is still poor, I can't even count the amount of typos were in this. I feel like whoever edited these books really let the author down, I logged them all on the kindle but who knows if they will be changed, but it takes away from reading. I felt like I was an editor having to correct all the mistakes.

Moving onto general plot, I'm so glad for Kaelem. If he wasn't a main part in this book I would have been bored to tears. Especially as Raith just up and leaves as soon as Scarlett gains her Fae body/powers. Yes he comes back to save her in the winter court but then ups and leaves yet again for information on his mother. So even though I absolutely HATE love triangles, I was glad that there was interest between Kaelem and Scarlett just so something interesting was happening. But him trapping her sister for blackmail? Not cool Kaelem.

As much as the writing really infuriates me I am not a quitter and have mild intrigue now that Scarlett has become slightly more interesting in book 2, so I will continue to read and hope they all go up from here.

I love this series! It just keeps getting better. I'll admit, I had some issues with Scarlett during Two Princes of Summer but she had enough redeamable qualities and I could see her growth throughout the book so she didn't truly annoy me, just made me roll my eyes a bit. Her growth in this book is remarkable though and she's become much more likeable and mentally strong. I can't wait to witness her growth throughout the rest of the series and end up seeing what she's capable of with her powers. I just hope she can become a little less oblivious.
I also really enjoyed getting to see "King" Cade through other people's eyes as well as his own. He looks like the villian to so many but he truly is a good person when he uses his own insticts and stops being to so blind to how evil his mother is. Hopefully she'll die soon...I seriously can't wait for her to die.
I loved meeting all the new characters and getting to know some of the older ones better. There is seriously nothing I don't love about this book except that it isn't long enough and had to end. It's the type of book I never want to put down.
I definitely recommend this book and will absolutely reread it.

Prisoner of Darkness picks up beautifully where Two Princes left off.

We were introduced to the Unseelie King Kaelem and it was heavily hinted that he was going to be very important. We were definitely not disappointed! Along the way we are also introduced to a whole host of new characters and learn some interesting things about already established ones.

We pick up with Cade ruling Summer Court, Raith is staying at the unseelie court desperate to find answers about his mom, and Scarlett has gone back to the mortal world changed in more ways then one. But after a few instances Scarlett finds herself in need of help and she’s enlisted the help of an unlikely ally.

Scarlett finds herself thrown into the Night court with no warning or preparation for what’s to come. Unfortunately politics come into play and she finds herself having to play a part in the winter court where stakes are high and she doesn’t know who she can trust-even doubting herself. All of this is to save her sister who’s been trapped in a mirror world by Kaelem.

Nissa Leder does an amazing job at world building and her characters are brilliant! The series is shaping up to be an easy go to read and I can see myself reading these books over again.

This was garbage and I had fun.

Chapter 16 thoughts:

My thoughts just now: “Who am I rooting for? Callum? Yeah, I don’t give a fuck about Wraith. He’s an asshole anyway. … They’re all assholes (the three options). He’s at least the least asshole of the assholes. Yeah, he kidnapped her sister. But at least he’s keeping her safe.”
… Oh right… and he keeps forcing lust into her mind so that she’ll want to fuck him… and he just made her ignore her resisting thoughts so she would kiss him.
… Luckily for her he decided to stop. Then he warned her not to tease him because it won’t work out her way.

That’s who my best contender is… the kind of rapey one.

BTW this was his reaction to her testing to see if he was in her head. When she realized he was, she punched him in the stomach. So… he did this.

You know… teasing.

Also she makes a comment about absorbing lust while he is doing this… he might have been feeding her? He’s done it once just for fun and he says he doesn’t let many people do that.
Which… good. No one needs to consume your lust XD

Later Thoughts:
It feels so unnatural that they keep using “sis” lol. “Love you, sis” you might be able to get away with, but Ashleigh’s dialogue is always so unbelievable.

I'm still enjoying this series, but as I noted after reading the first book - the author seems to be taking plot and character ideas from SJ Maas' ACOTAR series. There were times where I felt like I was reading a slightly cheaper version of SJM. From the main characters burgeoning powers that seem to span all courts (see Feyre's powers after she becomes Fae) to Kaelem's seemingly sinister personality that hides a soft heart and a love for his people; even the villains are eerily similar to Amarantha's crazy a**. However, I love fantasy books where characters experience tremendous internal conflict and the author is building that in this book. I am still hoping to see a break in the parallels between this series and ACOTAR, but I will definitely keep reading. The dialogue is much improved from the first, and the only reason it gets 3 stars instead of 4 is the nagging feeling that she's re-writing SJM's books.

I'm loving this series! Scarlett is not your typical, whiny human-turned-fae character. Which I find to be beyond refreshing. There are layers to the characters, and no one is really cut and dry good or bad. Though there are several characters that I feel deserve a swift but painful death. Raith is just still to precious, but I'm having doubts about Cade. I am seriously enjoying Kaelem though! So sassy, sexy and a complete pain in the butt haha. The court dealings grow ever more complicated and war is on the way. The Fates have decided to butt in and make things more complicated and tense. No one trusts anyone and I am here for the drama. Really as long as certain people survive this I'll be happy.

I want to start my review with this:
V’Lane + Rhysand = Kaelem
And I’m into it.

I eat this kinda stuff up. Like is this basically ACOTAR/ACOMAF retold with new character names and new adventures? Yeah. But I really really really do not care because it’s still so much fun to read.

I’m loving this love diamond (yes, diamond, because there are 3 men who want lil’ ol’ Scarlett). Like give me more because I find this so entertaining. I predict she’ll end up with the V’Lane/Rhysand mashup character in the long run... but hopefully she makes out with all of them before she makes such a big decision.

I can’t wait to get into the 3rd book, but just know I actually feel guilty for loving these books so much.

Glad to see the characters developing and some of them are even doing a 180. But are they? I guess it's like the old saying of do not find out about your Heroes because you will be disappointed. And then you find out about those who were presented as antiheroes who are in fact just hurt souls acting out.

A lot happens in this book but really not a lot happens.

We're hanging out in the winter Court and watching all the alliances begin to take side knowing that there's a big evil plan of somebody's mother joining up with the winter Queen and trying to put all the sides against each other.

Meanwhile Kade has turned into the most dangerous of men. A careless idiot who doesn't ask people what they want and chooses to side with evil under the guise of doing well for other people.

Better than book 1. Interesting story, slightly better writing, but it is still without any depth or feeling. Everything plays on a surface level; scenes that could be luscious or titillating or nauseating are brushed over with a few sentences, and characters are still one dimensional, although thry are becoming more interesting within that single dimension.

Pet peve - everything hard or metallic "clicks" but specifically a battle between two swordsmen...the swords clicked against each other 🤦‍♀️

Wavered between 2 or 3 stars but the story is intriguing, enough that the shallowness of description doesn't deter me from the next book.

The fantastical journey continues. I'm becoming real proud of the fae that Scarlett is turning out to be and she's not even my character. My feelings towards Kaelem are still teeter-tottering between "creep" and "maybe she should be with him instead". Raith, I still love. I'm bummed about some of his actions but I understand them. I hate Cade something fierce and Poppy is becoming annoying. My suspicions and theories are ever-changing the more I read and the more I read, the more I want. I cannot wait for the next book.
