Every Night's Friday Night: Time and Freedom for the Rest of Your Life by Andrea R. Huff is a fresh new look at a topic that is anything but, focusing the author's experience and expertise as a retirement coach into the nooks and crannies of matters that are often woefully overlooked. Huff offers a perspective that redirects from the standard financial aspect of retirement (although that's certainly addressed) and instead targets readers to the less discussed elements that are equally, if not more, relevant as retirees enter into the third stage of their lives. She tells us, "...time is the new money, and it’s equally important to spend it well." Through ten well presented chapters, Huff digs deeper into transitioning, spirituality, identity, health, growth, legacy, and a host of other aspects that help create the framework for a full and fulfilling retirement.

Andrea R. Huff has created a wonderful book to fill a much needed rift in retirement planning with Every Night's Friday Night. The narrative is relatable, compassionate, and easy to read, avoiding the usual financial fear-mongering that often seeps (however unintentionally) into this genre of self-help. There is a levity to Huff's writing that made me feel instantly comfortable and at ease with the subject matter, furnishing real life stories and examples and exercises at the end of each chapter to tie in the goal of the reader with the material at hand. My personal favorite chapter was seven, Connections to Others. Building and maintaining relationships, philanthropy, and partnerships are such a vital piece to the overall quality of life for retirees during a time when isolation can become an unfortunate, dangerous, and substantive side effect. I would recommend this book to life coaches, counselors, retirement planners, and to those who are in, considering, or have someone they care about entering the third stage of life.

Ms Huff has great perspectives to share from her own experience and those of the diverse people she interviews. While the intention of the book is to help people move into retirement, I found it helpful for anyone at a crossroads in their career. I bought the book for my retired (and very bored) father but found it useful to me as a 46 year old new mom who is designing a life of career, family, friends and fun mix. And I’m passing it along to my husband who is at his own crossroads. Sorry, Dad, you’ll have to get your own copy.
The exercises were provocative, though I’ll admit not doing all of them. Nonetheless, I think they provide great reflection ideas. I especially thought the chapter on paradoxes was a unique idea and I did begin my own list of paradoxes with an open mind that I can have both things.
This is a simple, quick read with great ideas that will leave you hopeful and anticipating the third stage of life.

Andrea has completed a "must read" for life-long learners who are curious about how to design the third stage of life. I am amazed at how she has chosen ideal role models and succinctly captured their nuggets for living a full life no matter our age. Her intimate portrayal of her struggles and achievements in her transition deepened my respect and awe. I am inspired by Andrea, her executive coaching (I'm a client) and her first book (I've read it cover-to-cover).

Excellent book for anyone contemplating retirement or already in the third stage of life. It gives insight into what to consider and how to go about enjoying the real changes that come with retirement , not financial planning which is so often written about. Inspiring and motivating with realistic suggestions for using creative thinking to do what you've always wanted to do! It is certainly uplifting for those in a stage of life that can be exciting and fulfilling.
