Earth Two is a world beset by dangers, inside and out. It’s genetic groupings, the cloned “Tanks,” the “Natural Borns” and the hybrid “Mules” exist uneasily, each wary of the others, even as they rally to face the deadly threat of the First Imperium’s robot warriors.
President Max Harmon and his inner circle have played an elaborate game of chess for twelve years, a deadly battle of wits with the genocidal alien Intelligence known as the Regent. They have moved fleets, spread deceptions, built decoy planets … all to hide Earth Two’s location, to protect it from the deadly onslaught of the enemy.
But sitting and waiting is a losing game. The Regent’s resources are just too powerful, its technology too advanced. It will find Earth Two eventually … and when it does, it will consign the planet to the apocalypse of antimatter devastation. Harmon knows his people must do something … and when a scouting fleet sends back word that it has found the enemy’s antimatter production site, it seems almost too good to be true.
Harmon suspects it is all a trap designed to lure his fleet to its destruction. But, more than one side can lay a trap, or turn one around, and the elimination of the Regent’s antimatter production will go a long way to evening the two sides, and setting the stage for a final showdown the humans can win.
A decent story, maddeningly executed. Still worth following, though.
I am enjoying the ongoing saga of Earth 2 versus the Regent and its Imperium. Character development is interesting, plot twists appear, and there is a looming struggle among the people of Earth 2 that has me anxious to see resolved.
However, the plot development is maddening for its endless repetition of facts, of endless self recrimination and self doubt as the leaders rehash their feelings, chapter after chapter, paragraph after paragraph. These are virtually boiler plate, reworked a bit each time, and they serve as maddening filler. I found myself scanning rapidly through the stuff, looking for the next nugget of plot advancement.
Please, oh great author, give us fresh writing. We know decisions are difficult, that losing people is disheartening, but once or twice is enough!
Wow! I last read book 4, "Winds of Vengeance", in this series back in 2018! I kind of thought this series was over, but I do remember that Mr. Allan had thrown a slight hint that it wasn't with his small revel of a second Regent. Earth 2 has been quite the planet with a really strange civilization. It's divided into several factions which you'll read about and is explained at the beginning of the book. It can be quite confusing as to who is what, much less who is who! Even that is confusing.
Still, this civilization has a tremendous challenge ahead of it and that is the second Regent or a copy of the original that they have already destroyed. With the death of the original Regent, that should have stopped all military conflict in their remote part of the universe, but it didn't. This second Regent has appeared and is now sworn to find Earth Two and exterminate these humans at just about all costs. Earth Two, on the other hand, knows it has to fight this deadly foe while at the same time not destroying themselves internally. Max Harmon, the defacto dictator of Earth Two but also known as it's President has kept an iron rule over the planets population for the last twelve years. That was the story in the last book where an unwarranted uprising almost put the entire planet on a civil war footing with no one coming out the victor. Max Harmon had held their civilization together since then and he continues to do so to this day.
While Earth Two has seen peace from the now known second Regent for the last twelve years, they do know it definitely exists. They have sent out exploration parties to just see what's out there and possibly try to find where the Regent is located, but so far they have only found small fleets of the Regents vast arsenal. That is until now!
E2S Vaughn has just encountered another Regent fleet, but this one seems to have some strength to it. It is also in a system previously unexplored and named G47. Captain Roland Graham, commanding E2S Vaughn managed to defeat this Regent fleet but he had to find out where it had come from. So, he took his small flotilla into the next system, G48. There he found something that had to be reported back to Earth Two at all cost! And doing that very thing might very well cost Earth Two everything. The one edict that these scouting mission had was that they could never return directly to Earth Two and possibly never return home if they came into contact with Regent forces. Yet, what Captain Graham recognized here was something Earth Two had to engage with all it's military capabilities. Planet two in this system appeared to be a major production facility of anti-matter! He has to get word back to Earth Two as fast as possible, but will that lead to the Regent's discovery of Captain Graham's home world? And even if Earth Two gets the warning and sends everything possible, will it be enough. This system is going to be protected and strongly protected at that.
Still, this target has to be destroyed by the humans since it's very production of anti-matter is what fuels the Regents deadly missile warheads. Unfortunately, the Regent also knows that he has given the humans a target they cannot refuse to attack. He's planning on that very aggression to lure Earth Two's forces in for absolute and complete destruction. It is his plan and it will not fail. He has most of his military assets hidden in adjoining systems out of sensor reach of the humans. They will not know what they are attacking until they are about to be destroyed. So, will his trap work or have the humans a tactical edge in thinking about warfare that has stymied the Regent at every turn?
This book seemed short, but it was again, well written. I don't know why it took me so long to get to reading this book. Either way, I'm glad I did, but it now looks like this series is finally coming to an end with book 6, "Crusade of Vengeance", already on my reading list.
Before you start this title, please realize it is a spinoff / continuation of a much longer series by the author. You need to read Marines: Crimson Worlds I first, and all of the other books in that series, as well all of the titles in the Crimson Worlds Refugees series, or this episode won’t make much sense with the background story and characters.
If you were a fan of the Crimson Worlds series as well as the Crimson Worlds Refugees series, I believe you will like this new installment to the continuing saga. It started off a little slow and repetitive for me as the author was having some of the characters reminisce a bit but the last 30% or so picked up the pace. Based upon the end notes of the book, the next installment will wrap this series up to a conclusion.
I picked this up for $2.99 in the Kindle version: if you have enjoyed previous episodes of the Crimson Worlds series, you will certainly get more than $2.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.
As final vengeance for the destruction of the Artificial Intelligence known as Regent is at hand, a trap has been set to eliminate the space forces of the humans from Earth Two. Suspecting a trap but drawn by the possibly of destroying the Vengeful AI, the humans devise a desperate plot to defeat their nemesis and preserve humanity. Can their plan work or will the Vengeance trap prevail? This book is well worthwhile to find out the answer.
The author does a masterful job of describing the horrors of war and the demands of commanding men and women during battle. Sending people to certain death takes a toll on all associated with war. The whole series is well written and a good read. Can’t wait for the next book!
I find myself at a strange place with regard to this book and the series of which it is a part. For those of you younger than a certain age, the following reference may hold no meaning, but I find myself wishing for the Reader's Digest Condensed Book version of the story. After five books in the series, as the characters grow weary of the war with the second iteration of the Regent and its robotic forces, I grow tired of reading endless repetitive descriptions of space battles. I wanted to urge the story forward to see how the various threads of the plot twist, turn, and converge on a conclusion only to find the stage set for yet another book in the series. I may pick that up at some point, but not today.
The author Jay Allan totally disappointed me with this series, I mean it was ok but things just didn’t fit, like book 4 which was a waste there was no story in it only war not even one twist. And book 5 which I couldn’t wait for totally disappointed me, I was waiting for the grand finally and in a way it was ok but when a series is over all should be addressed and done with but not here so much left unanswered. Me I’m disappointed, others might like it the way it is but I can’t fully recommend this series only half way.
Jay Allan continues the Crimson Worlds Refugees with Storm of Vengeance Book 5. I've been following Jay Allan's work for quite some time and find his books to continue to hold my interest with each new release. Storm of Vengeance continues the saga of the survivors behind the sealed off gate to old Earth and its society. I won't divulge any spoilers in this review but the action and character development continue to be first rate. Buy this book and enjoy!
Enjoyed this follow on. The mix of story lines creates the whole world of activity. Parts were and remain predictable and one in particular was obvious coming and the story background conveniently forgotten (trying to avoid a spoiler here). I looked forward to the follow up but it appears not have arrived which is a shame in the current climate I could do with it!
This series is amazingly full of space warfare as well as marine engagements. But that just fills out the story vs being the story. This is a really fun series and set of characters, and I recommend it. I do however wonder when they will find the nanobots which are causing such problems, maybe in the next book?
Just re-read the series. Jay puts heart and soul into his writings! Love the struggles, challenges and twists this series has.only thing missing is the final book! If you’ve read this series, try BLOOD ON THE STARS series which is another truly masterfully written series that is riveting!
Twelve years have passed since the last major battle in the Refugees war with the First Imperium. The second Regent has set a dangerous trap for the humans. A trap suspected by Admiral West, can she reverse the trap and bring Victory out of Vengeance? I recommend this book highly.
I have enjoyed this series of books. With it’s great detail of various groups having to coexist (tanks, natural born, mules, etc.). Lots of tension and strife between all parties. The enemy is coming and great sacrifice needs to be made by everyone to win through. Looking forward to the next book
A good addition to the series. Mules and associated politics were well done. Lots of action buy both the navy and marines. The mule part I wonder about, with their level of technology.
Book 5 was a fun read and had errors throughout. I enjoyed this book, but it could have left out information that repeated. The overall characters and plot have grown well, but was a little predictable too. I look forward to book 6.
While he's a decent author, Jay Allan evidently does not know how to end a series. The stories just go on and on. Ultimately the reader is just left hanging while the author goes on to write another series.
New generation of hero’s emerge. Good descriptions of people under duress and how they cope. The series takes a fresh turn with the events in this book
