“There’s nothing here for me.”

Chase Carpenter has spent his whole life trying to get away from the small town of Baxter Springs. After eight years in the Marines, he’s only back for two weeks before he’s off on his next adventure – a new life working with his brother in New York.
He’s never had a reason to stay in one place—but when he runs into his old best friend, Ben, he can’t forget what they almost once shared. Will he be able to come to terms with his sexuality?

“My roots are here. This is my home.”

Ben Harper’s family has lived in Baxter Springs for generations. He’s openly gay, but he’s never gotten over his strong feelings for his best friend, Chase.
When his parents died in a car accident, the family ranch became his responsibility. His brother helps run the ranch, but the big, comfortable house that’s seen a hundred years of love and laughter feels cold and lonely now that Ben is the only one who calls it home. A proposition from Chase is too good to refuse.

“Two weeks. No Strings. No feelings. Those are the rules.”

When Ben runs into Chase unexpectedly, sparks fly as they try all the things they were too shy and inexperienced to do when they were younger. This time, though, Ben wants rules and assurances that when the two weeks are up, his heart won’t be broken again when Chase says goodbye.

Love doesn’t always play by the rules, and when it’s time for Chase to leave, Ben will have to choose between his keeping his family’s legacy alive and taking a chance on the only man he’s ever loved.

Every book this Author puts out is always a feel good cute story. And Avery is always an auto-buy author for me. I really liked the premise of the story and it all flows really well together.
3.5 stars for this one rounded up to 4 on Amazon...
Chase and Ben were best friends throughout high school. Until Chase left for the marines with little, to no contact. 8 years later and he’s back in Baxter Springs for a few weeks to visit before he starts life over in New York. Once he catches up with Ben things seem to click right back into place between them. Ben and his brother have been taking care of their family farm since their parents death. Once he sees Chase again he realizes his feelings never never changed, but Ben has he has no plans on ever leaving the farm, and Chase has no plans on ever settling down.. I personally IMO hated Chase, like the entire book, I can’t really pinpoint why, but just something about his personality grated on me, and I don’t feel like he even redeemed himself at the ending. Lol. But the book itself, and the writing was good, and I will always recommend reading Avery’s books.
I know this is a new series and I am really interested to find out who will be in the next book since this one really didn’t give it away on who those Main Characters will be.

DNF @ 43%.

I should start off by pointing out that I am not a huge fan of the whole "reunited with my _____" thing.... I don't really care if it's the best friend, ex-lover, high school bully.... I'm just not a fan of it.

Then there is the fact that these best friends essentially go 8 years without contact. Like, Chase wasn't even aware of the fact that Ben's parents had passed away, which you think at least Chase's parents would have mentioned during a phone call, seeing as they knew the two of them were inseparable. Which, fine.... but then Ben is so worried about starting anything with Chase lest it ruin their friendship. When you've already gone 8 years without speaking, what have you got to lose? Another 8 years of not speaking?

And then there is the fact that both Chase and Ben are boring and not very fleshed out. I couldn't really say that I knew much about them except for Chase was in the marines and has buzzed hair, and Ben works on a ranch (what he ranches, I don't know... but apparently it allows him to sleep in on the weekends, so I assume not livestock), is gay and in love with Chase. And the two of them feel at ease with each other. Neither has any personality to speak of... at none that showed at almost the halfway mark.

I would have preferred a shorter separation coz 8 Years is a long time. Overall, it’s a feel good story about best friends turned lovers.

This is a terrific start to a new series, I couldn’t put it down. I was quickly drawn to the characters and was rooting for their happiness. My emotions were all over the place as I read this story - I laughed, cried, was exasperated, and happy. The author has me eagerly awaiting for more.

I received a copy of this book from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.

Oh where to begin. This starts off as teenage love, gay man falls in love with straight best friend before said friend leaves for the military. Oh look, now we're a second chance book because duh, best friend returns to small town.

Gay best friend has essentially not lived his life. Brief mention of some dates, maybe a boyfriend or two. Straight friend ? We have NO idea who he was banging while gone, and now we move on to the gay for you part of the story. They have the bright idea (oh this is a good one), to date, but not really because they won't let feelings come between them EVEN THOUGH they mean soooo much to one another. Easy peasy. Check out my highlights, it's all there.

Here is what kept me from really liking this book. You have a straight man, who suddenly goes so gay, so fast, and you have a gay man who acts pretty damn straight. Oh he has (we're to assume here) never given a blow job in his life, but oh yeah, he could spend his life doing it non stop. There is apparently no such thing as prep, no clean up, nothing like that. People, the devil is in the details, which this books is seriously lacking of.

Babe. This is the only way it seems for the aforementioned super straight man to refer to his non boyfriend, non hook up, non friends with benefits, friend. Babe. Yup, that is totally keeping the whole no feelings thing pretty clear. Oh, and he also smothers him with kisses.

As I said, it's all the missing little details that when added up, really drive home the need for a better editor, beta team, or just one really good read through. I thought the characters were just meh, the sex was meh, I didn't feel excited or happy for them. So yeah, no, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Two-for-One

This review will cover both Book 1 and Book 2 of the series (are there any others coming?)

I really liked "Coming Home," the first in the Baxter Springs series, because even though it was obvious from the start that Ben and Chase would take the friends-to-lovers road, author Avery Ford got us down the road without condescension or too much angst.

But what lurked beneath the narrative at all times was the question of where Ben's brother Eric fit into the tale. After all, he and Ben owned and ran the ranch that they inherited two years before when their parents were killed in a car crash. Chase, who left Baxter Springs for the Marines right after a fateful kiss from Ben following high school graduation (the Prologue), did not know about this, which is one of the only "uh, duh" aspects of the overall plot.

Still, one got the impression that even though Ben was out from high school, and Eric lived in his own house on the prairie, they were pretty much alike in character and looks (one supposes it's Ben on the cover of "Coming Home," and Eric on the cover of "Coming Out.") The play, here, is that gay Ben and somewhat curious Chase would dance around each other until they found a HEA scenario--which was really almost cute despite the nastiness that occurred getting there.

And in the second book, openly gay but abused (by his father) Ryan and somewhat curious Eric were to do their own little dance in almost the same way as did Ben and Chase. (I really thought the Prologue in this one was just wrong, why read the rest of the book? No spoilers). That they also got to a HEA without too much angst but lots of tears of joy brought a nice coda to a couple of books that are easy on the eyes and mind.

1. Chase has never so much as even thought of another man, not even Ben, in a sexual manner. Yet he has no hesitation when it comes to intimacy, sex, AND knows how to prep Ben? 2. Chase calls Ben "babe" almost immediately. 3. As close as Ben and Chase always were, no one thought to inform Chase that his best friend Ben's parents had died? 4. Chase's parents treating him like her was 12 and totally disregarding his military service was cringe, to put it lightly.

My biggest issue with the story is everyone's complete 180. Eric, Ben's older brother, was miserable doing the farm work. And clearly they weren't making much money, because for all of those many, many acres, they couldn't hire help? Ben was hesitant, because he felt that farm work and small town life was all he knew. He didn't even really socialize (for some reason). But he wanted to be with Chase. Chase had never enjoyed small town life and was ready to move on. But suddenly, Ben and Eric find out that the new ranch owner won't be a "mom & pop" type deal, and there's NO WAY they will sell their family's property. Suddenly, they couldn't imagine being anywhere else. And Chase has to stay in the town he doesn't really like, because suddenly Ben being there makes it a wonderful place to be.

I really enjoyed this new book by Avery Ford.

Chase returns to his small hometown. He plans on staying there for 2 weeks before moving to NYC. Chase has never found anything great is his hometown, but he is happy to catch up with his former best friend, Ben, while he is there.

For Ben, his whole life has always centered around this town and his family's ranch. He and his brother run the ranch together since their parents have died.

While they are re-connecting, they decide to talk about an old kiss and they agree to have some friends with benefits fun while Chase is home. Of course, as all good romances go, they find themselves wanting more. They have decisions to make if they are going to be together, since Chase is moving to NY and Ben needs to be at the ranch. And Chase isn't sure that he could ever come out to his parents.

This book just hits all my buttons. Likeable characters, a second chance love, having to figure out how to be together. The characters just complement each other so well. As usual, Avery did a wonderful job. I enjoyed every second.

This book could have been so much more than it was.
There are some huge, gaping holes in the plot and things that don't quite add up or make sense.

*spoiler alert*
1.If the boys were such inseparable friends prior to the post grad separation, it makes no sense that all ties between them were just severed. Surely, even marines are able to write and receive letters?
2. How is it possible that Chase barely recognises Ben when they bump into one another? 8 years is not that long a period of time.
3. One gets the impression that Chase had occasionally visited his parents. Why did he never bump into Ben during those times?
4. How is it that Ben, being the younger brother was left responsible for the entire ranch...by himself? If the ranch is a vast as it seems, I can't see how the upkeep and maintenance could be handled by only Eric & Ben. There must have been other hands or staff.
*end spoiler*

Bottom line: I can't recommend this book.
Basic chemistry is lacking between mc's.
Bedroom activity is uninspiring.
Dialogue feels unnatural and often forced.
I'm sorry. This is a "no".

Great read 😊

I’ve seen this series mentioned a few times on FaceBook and on Amazon..
And I’ve skipped past it many times for a different book.... damn I can’t believe I didn’t pick it before now, I was so mixing out on an amazing read ❤️
I adore Ben and Chase ❤️ I’ve really enjoyed everything about their story
I so felt for Ben when he was younger, I can’t imagine how hard it was on him to love his straight best friend and lose him to his army career 😕
Chase really made up for it tho, he didn’t even question his feelings for Ben, he just jumped straight in and took a chance... which is a lovely change to most books where the “straight” guy is always fighting the attraction and feelings.
I loved how it was as if no time has passed at all when they met up again years later, I loved how both guys were willing to change their whole life to be together 😍
It was just an all round amazing romance story... I can’t wait to dive into Eric’s (Bens “straight” older brother) book... I can’t wait to see what happens next at the ranch/barn

This is one of those books you wish you could give more than 5 stars too! As usual this author delivers a fantastic read. The characters are well developed and easy to fall for.
Ben fell in love with his straight best friend years ago but they've been apart for eight years so he thinks he's safe. Chase comes back into his life and he knows why Chase is his best friend.
Chase doesn't understand what happens when he's around Been just that he loves being there. Chase intends to see Ben while he's home, before he moves to New York to start his life.
Avery Ford writes romance so well and characters that are addictive. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. This is a great start to this series and I can't wait to see what is to come.

One kiss changed a friendship 8 yrs ago.

On the night before Chance leaves for the military, he kisses his best friend Ben, only to have him run out of the room.

Now back to visit for 2 weeks before moving to New York and starting over after military life, Chance wants to try "What if". Ben agrees but of course NO FEELINGS are his only requirements.

When Ben can't keep to his only rule and thinks about flipping his entire life around to follow Chance to NY, will Chance want him to go? will Chance decide to stay in Baxter Springs instead of letting Ben change his entire life?

Avery had me loving this book so much that I read it in 1 day and stayed up way to late finishing. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for this series.

Beautiful friends to lovers and second chance romance that truly shows you that home is where the heart is. Chase and Ben have been best friends since the eighth grade and shared one kiss at the end of high school. They were separated when Chase left for the Marines but now he's back, eight years later, but only for two weeks before moving to New York. They embark on a two week, no strings, no feelings, affair. But can they really keep their feelings at bay, and can Chase and Ben really let go again? You really need to read this beautifully sweet and really steamy story to find out!

Assuming what you think another person will feel or think about something is usually a good way to find yourself shocked when you find out how they really feel or think about something... just sayin'!

I didn't like Chase much at the beginning of the story... or during the middle of the story, but he does sorta grow on you... eventually! ;p

Ben is like me... happy, but maybe not exactly fulfilled, in his comfort zone... but, he and Eric needed to realize that things need a good "shake up" every once in a while...

NOW to find out what this author has in store for Eric in book two...

Sidenote: Proofreading can have such wonderful results...

Coming Home is a great start to what I'm sure will be a fantastic series from Avery Ford.
One kiss shared between best friends - one gay, one straight.
Eight years later, an accidental meeting in the grocery story has Chase and Ben agreeing to a no strings relationship with a two week expiry date.
I love friends to lovers story. I enjoyed watching Chase and Ben falling in love.
This is a low angst, sweet, sexy book.
I can't wait to see what's next in this series from Ms Ford

Chase Carpenter and Ben Harper were BFF until Chase joined the marines. Now eight years later he is back and when they meet in the supermarket, Ben discovers he is still in love with him.
This is a beautiful love story exploring the possibilities between two friends and their feelings for each other.

Okay

A bit non eventful that I found myself skimming most of it as I hate not finishing a book. Very simple writing that unfortunately didn't do it for me. No real build up or suspense and the dialogue was far too unrealistic and unnatural. The characters didnt have a single controversial heated conversation throughout the entire book.

It was okay.

It was also predictable and the scenes a bit cliched at times. Even though they were best friends for years, I cringe whenever a writer has one mc begin calling the other "Babe" right off the bat. Pet names don't happen that quickly in real life, especially between former best friends. Just a little too forced and Pollyanna.

2nd chance romance...kinda

Chase and Ben were best friends but there has always been a little spark between them making their friendship extra special. Only they didnt get a chance to explore it when Chase left for the mi lo Italy. 8 yrs later and he's back and that spark is still there.
