Greg Bell, CSP, is a recognized thought leader, author of Water The Bamboo®: Unleashing The Potential Of Teams And Individuals, and founder of the Water The Bamboo Center For Leadership. As an innovator and keen observer of highly successful leaders and teams, he distilled his findings into the Water The Bamboo approach to success. Through his entertaining and content-driven keynotes and seminars, Greg has encouraged and inspired thousands of leaders and teams to identify and water their bamboo to create remarkable results.

Greg learned the virtues of discipline and hard work from his grandfather, a Texas farmer. Greg was the first in his family to graduate from college; he played basketball at the University of Oregon where he was twice named Inspirational Player of the Year. After receiving a political science and law degree from the University of Oregon, he practiced law within a large organization.

Personal events inspired him to re-evaluate his life and priorities, and he helped launch the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign for the National Association of Basketball Coaches—a non-profit that has raised over 50 million dollars for cancer research.

Greg has become a highly sought-after speaker and thought leader. He teaches Water The Bamboo through his books, blog, and over 80 speaking engagements a year to help leaders and teams unlock their unlimited potential for growth. Greg is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), the highest earned designation for the National Speakers Association and International Federation of Professional Speakers. Only 10% of speakers have earned this designation.

Starting as a personal mantra, Water The Bamboo has evolved through the daily practice and hard-earned success of the leaders, coaches, high-performing individuals, and teams who have embraced the philosophy. Greg and Water The Bamboo were featured on a Public Broadcasting special that aired on stations across the country.

Simply put, Greg is a problem solver who will help you and your organization flourish. Water The Bamboo is not a feel-good philosophy; it’s about seeing the world in a new and profound way for better results.

Greg lives, works, and plays in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three daughters, whose middle names are Grace, Hope, and Joy.

It does not take much for anyone these days to come up with a catchy phrase and release a book of this nature. Given the competition for this book in my life, this book was not my favorite. While I think the concepts are sound, the delivery really has to be out of the park, in this category.

Nevertheless, it is a great tool, and probably most effective in the workplace, not the bedside table.

3 3/4 stars. A lot of good information. Wish I had this 30 years ago. The writing style does not lend to long periods of reading. Not interesting enough to get "lost" in the book.

One can NEVER read too much self help.

This inspiring little tidbit temporarily increased internal motivation for a month. It also clearly outlined what internal motivation v. external motivations look like in success of outcomes.

One unique point, amongst the goal setting, persistence, clean up after yourself, and integrity talk, was: write more thank you notes. "Even if you forget at the time, don't give up. Instead go back and say, 'I missed the opportunity earlier to say thank you for____." Keep thank you notes handy so that you can show appreciation right away". Writing thank you notes for clients at Insurance work, I wish to incorporate this into my personal life. if but how.

Great read; extremely helpful during a time of reassessing my workload and direction in the various organizations that I was a part of and leading. As a result of reading this book and taking my own thoughts into account, I created a vision statement for my own life that captured the most important areas I hope to advance in over the course of day to day living, as well as many decades from now.

I think I've reached the point of saturation for general leadership books. They are all covering the same concepts (generally valid) from a self-help perspective (I'd challenge). I don't argue with the concepts covered.

It's definitely a motivational book, not necessarily because everything in it was brand new to me, but it helps focus on what matters most to be successful.

The bamboo analogy is used to frame basic and useful business practices. I appreciated that "practice" was scattered throughout.

I read Water the Bamboo to prepare for an interview with author and motivational speaker Greg Bell. It took longer than I'd thought it would because in addition to using the book to formulate questions as they apply to businesses, I started to think about the principles and how to "unleash the potential" in my own life! One thought about pursuing excellence instead of perfection really resonated on a personal level.

This would be terrific for business leaders as well as anyone looking for motivation to live a fulfilling life. There are practical exercises that accompany the text as well.

"Success is not defined by financial or material gain, but instead by daily and long-term living that supports who you are now and who you aspire to be."

"Reaching goals while sacrificing your values is not achievement at all."

"You have two ears and one mouth. Use them accordingly."

I saw Greg Bell as the keynote speaker at a conference. Because of his excellent presentation, I was inspired to learn more about his "Water the Bamboo" methodology. The giant bamboo is an incredible plant but to become this, it requires sowing, watering, nurturing, and patience. Suddenly, after years have passed, it will sprout and rapidly grow into something beautiful. The book is a simple and logical read that discusses ways to harness the power of teams and team members within a work environment.

If anyone is entry level into management, even fast food restaurants, the young person would excel after reading and applying these concepts.

Those that are in middle management and feel that they have plateaued this is definitely a must read. I gifted a copy to such a person and it gave them hope before leaving the company.

It is a short but powerful read. Not instant but long term solid advice and returns.

Standard advice regarding building teams and setting goals using a bamboo farming analogy. Enjoyed this book for what it was and can see how implementing the exercises can be helpful. Would recommend to anyone managing a lower performing team or to individuals needing some direction or refocus regarding goals.

Here is a little inspirational book for anyone, but focused on business. Greg Bell thinks like a farmer and prepares his soil (goals), plant your seed (plans), water water water (persistence) until your harvest arrives (rewards). Easy reading, will cause you to think differently, may be an avenue for growth. I could not find this on Amazon, so try waterthebamboo.com. Be the farmer!

Heard Bell speak—and got juggling lessons from him!—at CACE 2017 in Portland. Changed my life. For having the courage to try to juggle in front of all my peers, he gave me a copy of his book, but I lent it to my boss’s husband the next weekend because I was behind in book club… I need to ask for it back, I think. Seems like a great book for the turn of the year.
