People are being murdered with a surgical scalpel. Special Prosecutor Jana Berzelius is in charge of the investigation looking for this serial killer.
Are these random killings? Is there a connection between the victims? Jana finds an old case .. a patient was badly damaged during a surgery. The physician lost his license to practice. Now these murders are happening in the same medical community. Is there a connection? Revenge, maybe?
The Special Prosecutor finds that the death of her mother may be linked in some way. She has secrets of her own that she doesn't want to see the light of day.
It becomes a race to catch the killer before another victim is taken.
This was a slow starter with multiple characters vying for attention. it did pick up speed about halfway through the book. I'm glad I stuck with it, because it became really interesting and the suspense builds until the surprising ending.
Many thanks to the author / HarperCollins / Edelweiss / Harlequin-Mira/ Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A woman is found dead early one morning in March in an apartment in Norrköping. The first one to arrive is ambulance driver Philip Engström. Philip Engström realises when a while later another body is found that he know both victims.
Someone else that is also realising that there is a pattern is prosecutor Jana Berzelius. Both what's the connection with Philip Engström? Jana, together with Inspector Henry Levin and Detective Mia Bolander must find out the truth and stop a killer that seems to be out for revenge.
Prio ett is the third book, but the first book I have read, in the Jana Berzelius series. However, it worked well reading it as a stand-alone. It took some time for me to get into the story and get to know the characters, but after a while, I felt that I started to get the hang of it. I found it interesting to read about a prosecutor in the main role, especially someone as special as Jana Berzelius who once was a child soldier. But, that's in the past and she likes to keep it that way, which is why she has a bit of a problem when an escaped convict blackmailed her to help him because he has documents she has written about her past.
I found the story to be fascinating, despite the fact that it did take me some time to get into it. There came a point when I just got so caught up in the hunt for the murderer that I just couldn't stop reading the book. This is why it only took me a day to read it and that I finished it around midnight. The last part of the book, when the police started to realise the truth is especially thrilling to read. I did have some suspicions concerning the killers identity that turned out to be correct, but I didn't mind that because the book was so well-written and thrilling.
The book is superb and engrossing to read. The main characters have secrets and a dark past that makes me think of Sharon Bolton series about Lacey Flint.
Excuse me while I take a moment. Reverence! This book was absolutely fantastic and I can't believe I came in on the third in such a series having never heard of this author before (I don't know who to blame for that.) This is simply a great thriller. It has themes of loss, murder, revenge, redemption, and loyalty. It's part mystery, part police procedural, and partly just a darn great story. However, it is NOT a medical thriller (that is very misleading in the blurbs) by my reckoning. But, I'm going to let it go as I loved it anyway.
This suspenseful novel is set in Norrkoping, Sweden. There are so many characters in this novel that it would be impossible, without spoilers, to give a run down of who is who and how they were involved in the plot. The main character is, obviously, meant to be Prosecutor Jana Berzelius (and whoa what a backstory she has) followed by the police team -- there's Gunnar, Mia, Henrik, Anneli, and technician Ola. Then there are the secondary characters about whom the action revolves -- paramedics Philip and Sandra. Then the victims -- murdered in their homes in most gruesome style. At first it's a little hard to keep them all straight. There's also a mystery man with whom Jana has a history -- and it's not the romantic kind. But I won't say more so that you can work it all out for yourself and enjoy it as much as I did. The writing and characterization are top-notch and, even if you guess ahead at what might be going on as I did, you will still enjoy the ride!
What are you waiting for -- get this on your TBR as soon as you can. Best would be if you read #1 and #2 first, I'm sure, though I didn't have that luxury. I can only imagine, given the little dangling morsel at the end, that there is going to be a fourth and I've already got it on my MUST READ list.
Thank you to NetGalley and MIRA Books/Harlequin Enterprises for this e-book ARC to read and review. Don't forget me when I come begging for more Jana Berzelius.
An accident during surgery leads to a dramatic change in the patient’s life and leads a resident to abandon his practice. But ten years later, senseless and gruesome murders start taking place in the medical community. Jana Berzelius is the prosecutor in charge of the case and what she doesn’t realize is that the death of her mother is connected to the killer roaming the streets.
I didn’t know what to expect coming into the third book in a series with an author I’ve never read, but I was pleasantly surprised to be able to pick up the third book and know what was going on without having to read the first two. I loved the gruesomeness of the murders in this novel, they are quite graphic, and I could almost picture the poor murdered souls. I found the first little bit of the book to be slow and confusing because there are so many characters in this novel to keep track of. But slowly, I got the hang of the characters and the writing and I was absolutely sucked into the story.
I love Jana’s character and thoroughly enjoyed the drama that was going on, not only in her life but within every character’s lives’ in this novel. There was side drama to every character and I loved trying to figure out whom the murderer was and how each person was going to be able to push through their issues. I did not see the ending coming and I could not turn the pages fast enough to know what was going to happen. I was shocked by who the actually killer was because I suspicious of all the other characters. The characters in this novel are very flawed and I enjoy that in a book. I can’t wait to pick up the first two of this series now, and I recommend you do the same!
SPOILER ALERT!!! BELOW IS BASICALLY THE WHOLE EXPLANATION OF WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS BOOK AND WHY ITS MAKING ME GROW GREY HAIRS. DO NOT CONTINUE READING UNLESS YOU WANT THE WHOLE BOOK SPOILED FOR YOU.
•••
The story starts off with the local PD of a bumblef* nowhere town capturing this guy that supposedly is involved in some like government resistance program or whatever and has like 7 murders under his belt or something. So he sustained injuries during his capture so now he’s in a hospital, tied to the bed and being sedated. The 2 nurses walk in to sedate him again and check all his IV lines and turns out homeboy over there isn’t really sedated into unconsciousness as they thought so while the male nurse is looking under the bed because he dropped his pen, the female nurse somehow gets knocked out and then the viva la resistance guy threatens him with the non-working sedative and the male nurse is like okay here take my clothes. So he does. And he just walks right out of the hospital, because Sweden.
So then the book pans to a investigator or whoever the hell she is, I couldn’t keep up with what the 4839204 characters did in this book, anyway, her name is Jana. She finds out her adoptive mother is dead. Died of a heart attack. She’s estranged from her adoptive dad basically so she’s like trying to deal with all of this herself. She comes home after finding out about her mom and finds an intruder in her house who is non other than the miracle anti sedative government hater. Fast forward a little and we find out that they were both like in some weird guys house when they were kids like trapped in his basement or something while the guy basically trained them to be like super assassin ninja warriors. So she asks him to leave and he says no and tells her that he has her diaries and that if she doesn’t let him stay in her apartment then he’s gonna release her journals and everyone will know who she “really is”. *cue the villain laughter because I swear this is like the ultimate threat made by everyone* So of course, she just rolls her eyes and locks herself in her room.
Then the story goes to 2 EMS drivers. Philip and Sandra. Sandra seems super needy, Philip has a pill popping addiction because he has like anxiety and insomnia and turns out he fell asleep during a call a few nights before and the lady died, which Sandra is like super quick to remind him of because she’s just a walking asshole. Philip is basically obsessing over his regular partner named Katarina or something with a K, and about how she’s been out sick for a week and he keeps reminding himself how much he doesn’t like Sandra while Sandra just reminds him that if he falls asleep on the clock again that she will report him. So Philip does what any other sensible married man trying to have a child with his wife would do, he avoids his home, his wife, ends up pulling 24 hour shifts at work, non-stop calling his normal work partner and then of course leaves his wife and tells her he’s going to work meanwhile he goes to Katarinas house and tries peeking in her windows when she doesn’t answer the knocks on her door. He sees nothing, so he leaves.
At this time we pan to yet more characters. I still don’t understand who is married to whom but we have like 4-6 cops, techs and whatever else title they hold, on the scene of a woman who had her hands severed off. They talk to neighbors and the neighbors who are of course nosy af, tell the cops that it was probably the boyfriend. So they question the boyfriend but he has an alibi. So they let him go.
Two of the cops (I think one is like a detective and the other is the boss?) are married, or were, until the wife cheated and basically everything went to shit. There was like 1/4 of the book just dedicated to how sorry she was she cheated but “it only happened once so it should be forgiven” like what?
At the same time, there’s a guy named Per who Jana is like seeing but not really. It’s a friends with benefits type deal, but without any benefits for poor Per. Jana gets food out of this so she’s game. Whilst Per is over there trying to pursue her love.
A little while later they stumble upon a third guy who is still alive, but had his legs cut off. The same EMS drivers show up to the scene and Philip knows the guy so he’s over there trying to tourniquet his legs and I guess he was too messed up on his meds that he did it wrong, so the guy dies. At this point, Philip has killed 2 people on accident. The cops basically start arguing with each other about how you need 3 murders with the same MO in order to call it a serial killer, so they wait. Because that’s the sensible thing to do.
Anyway, so then the cops find another body. This time, the tongue is cut out. And they begin speculating that they have a serial killer on their hands. Turns out this 3rd person is Katarina, AKA pill popping Phil’s work crush.
So the cops begin focusing on footprints they found outside her windows and they somehow tie everything back to Phil, including the wedding ring he “lost” that they managed to find on the floor of Katarinas bedroom. (Scaaaaaandalous)
They detain Phil under the assumption that he’s the killer because they find they he’s tied to all these folks that are showing up dead.
While Phil is in jail trying to wiggle his way out, Sandra is trying to be a good friend to Phil’s wife who we find out is now pregnant with his child.
During this time, Jana is still trying to get the killer resistance dude out of her apartment and he tells her that in a few days she has to sneak him out of the apartment and drive him to some place and he will give her the journals back. So she’s waiting. At this time she also finds out her mother didn’t die from a heart attack but it seems as though she was smothered. So Jana breaks off her moms finger nail that seems to have something under them and gives them to her like crazy dad to pull some strings and have the DNA ran because she thinks Philip killed her mom.
So fast forward a bit and Jana and Danilo or whatever his name was are in the car and driving to whatever place he told her to drive him to, and she gets a call from her dad and he tells her that there’s a DNA match.
Philip begins realizing that someone is out there killing people and he thinks he’s next. His reasoning being that he used to be a doctor and he was supposed to be looking on to a surgery and the main surgeon handed the surgery over to Philip and told him to do it but Phil sliced the patients artery which caused a bleed and they couldn’t do anything so then the main surgeon just sewed it up but did it too tight which resulted in not enough blood flow to the patients legs which caused numbness and the helicopter pilot failed to tell them the helicopter wasn’t working until like 11 hours post surgery so basically the patient had to get her legs amputated and the last Phil heard from her, she told him she will get her revenge. So at this time, Phil is legit trying to convince the cops that this old lady in a wheelchair is killing all these folks and butchering their limbs.
So the cops finally track down the lady Phil is saying that he believes is the killer, and they go to her last known address which is like a run down house that’s filled with trash, a hoarders paradise in other words. They end up finding this lady in her basement in a wheelchair, dead, for a few years now. However the neighbor says the ladies daughter lives at the house, which is weird, because the lady never had a daughter, or so they thought. One of the cops sees a kids handmade star hanging on the wall and pulls it down and looks at the back and sees a name, Sandra. DUN DUN DUN.
At the same time, Jana is back on the phone with her dad and he tells her the DNA comes back to someone named Sandra. All the wheels start turning in Jana’s mind and she gets a call from her boss saying they think they know who the killer is and that it’s the EMS driver, Sandra, and that she’s been framing Phil and she’s currently at his house so Jana like whips the car around and heads to Phil’s house. Sees Sandra get in her car and begins following her. They get to some raggedy house in the woods when Sandra ends up like slicing Phil’s wife’s stomach and leaving her to bleed out. So Jana like wants revenge so she tries to go in with a knife but gets stabbed in the thigh by her road trip companion/ninja buddy. She plays it off all cool and just ties her shirt around her thigh and limps her happy ass to the cottage where she sneaks in and starts waiting for Sandra to pass by her. After a brief exchanging of words, they get into a brawl which somehow ends with Jana on the floor and Sandra about to stab her and then comes the knight in resistance armor crashing through the door and shoots Sandra in the head. So then he picks up Jana and he’s like “you need to get me to my meeting” and so they are off.
They arrive to the meet up spot and he gets out her car and gets into another car and leaves. She doesn’t get her journals back but whatever she’s just happy he’s gone.
So then we pan over to 2 of the cops and apparently one is moving into a new house or something and the other is helping him move in. Pointless.
Then we pan back to Jana and she gets a knock on the door and it’s 7 boxes worth of her journals. In the last box she finds a hand written note that says “I’ll be in touch”, obviously from Danilo.
That’s it. THATS HOW THIS BOOK FUCKING ENDS.
To say I am disappointed in this book would be a SEVERE understatement.
Oh and I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Thanks Goodreads!

(415.lpp) Man patika labāk par 1.grāmatu.
Zelfs Jana is persoonlijk betrokken. ============================== The storyline of Jana and Danilo continues amidst a new exciting case where several people die and ambulance paramedic Philip seems to know more about it. Even Jana is personally involved.
Daudzie tēli, to piņķerīgās savstarpējās attiecības un gandrīz klišejiskais skandināviskais kriminālsižets vēl kaut cik spēj izklaidēt.
A really thrilling mystery! Relatively fast-paced, and gives you JUST enough clues to keep you on the edge of your seat. I think this should have a screen adaption! I'm really liking this series, I need to get the fourth book.
(https://www.emelieschepp.se/nyheter-2...).
I found this painfully hard to read and hard to follow with all the zipping to and fro very quickly from one person to another without much introduction. Probably due to the fact i only found out this was number 3 in a series just now - i think i missed alot that would have been better explained. Either way, just not the novel for me.
Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
