The tension between Naruto and Gaara builds, and Naruto finds himself not only understanding his rival but also sympathizing with him. But that doesn't mean he's gone soft. As Gaara continues to mutate, Naruto prepares for the fight of his life!
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
And now we get to some of the best fighting scenes in all of Naruto. It's Naruto vs Gaara, moving from Gaara's partial transformation into full demon possession.
One of the most interesting aspects of these mangas is how Kishimoto conveniently kept Naruto from seeing Sasuke's real powers, as well as the reverse. They're both so confident they know what's going on, so when Sasuke finally sees Naruto let loose with a shitload of chakra and the truly gigantic summoned toad, I shivered as much as if I were Sasuke, stunned speechless.
It just goes to show, no matter how close two friends (or rivals) are, there's always room for real surprise.
Finally! It took fourteen volumes to get to the really good stuff, but it's here, and it's glorious :D Gaara's backstory tugs at the heartstrings, even if it's a bit too on the nose for my taste ;) But Naruto's determination and willingness to sacrifice for those he loves is always uplifting, and I guess it's the main reason I'm reading these volumes. The battle looks pretty good, too, full of twists and unexpected moves, especially once the Chief Toad and his pa come into the fray.
As a side note, though, I do wish not every volume of Naruto ended on a cliffhanger... This becomes quite tiresome ;)
Garaa's backstory is so heartbreaking!! Naruto vs. Garaa is in my top five favorite fights in all of Naruto history to date and there are a lot of them. This entire story arc is incredible because it truly is one of the hardest challenges they have ever faced and so much is revealed and it is just amazing!!
- Gaara transformed to half-form Shukaku. - Gaara vs Sasuke, 2nd round - Sasuke reached his limit even with his Cursed Seal - Naruto appears! - Gaara's backstory revealed - Naruto vs Gaara - Gaara transformed into Shukaku full form - Naruto summoned Gamabunta
I really enjoyed seeing the cover of this! Volume 15 covers Sasuke vs. Gaara for the first third and then Gaara vs. Naruto in the rest. I admit that I was a 50-50, because I don't fancy the hate and vengeance speeches in the plot, but I did enjoy Gaara's emotional backstory with Yashamaru, as well as the Toad fights. Gaara gets pushed to the point of transforming into Shukaku or One-Tail, his complete surfacing requiring that Gaara is asleep. Sakura, Pakkun and Sasuke eventually become spectators, with Temari and Sakura being reduced to mere punching bags. I felt sad that for many volumes females have not even held a secondary role yet. I remember I found Gaara's story completely heartbreaking in the anime and unsurprisingly it was even more so in the manga due to the details in each frame and facial expression. In fact, I feel not only that I understand the story better, but also that I am experiencing it in a deeper way through the manga. Gaara has a very complicated story that doesn't really appears so at first. Gradually though (and with some help from Wikipedia) I've come to understand it. Gamabunta gets summoned again and agrees to help Naruto at the plea of Gamakichi and they fight Shukaku with a variety of combos. The volume ends with the action in mid air, which must've been very frustrating for the audience at the time. Nobody likes a cliff hanger! Or do we? At least this technique is effective in triggering us to keep coming back for more.
Sasuke tried his best to overpower Gaara, but failed to do so due to the immense strength of Shukaku. And before we knew it, it was time for Naruto vs Gaara!! Simply put, A battle between monsters! A battle of a lifetime! An ultimate collusion! This intense battle kept me on the edge of my seat throughout this epic volume and thankfully it still continues in the next volume!

This volume was very sad. I was crying by the Gaara’s past story. He was betrayed by his precious person who taught him abou what was “love”. If I were him, I would probably not be able to stand up again.... I couldn’t imagine the world which all people don’t need my existence. That was really and deeply sad. In addition, the teamwork of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura was very good. I love this volume.
Lesson learnt when you fight for others (the ones you love) that is true strength because you fight to protect them. I can definitely say this when I fell in love with Naruto. Gaara and Narutos fight was epic and it shall forever live in my mind.
