Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Unlike a lot of wrap-up writing, especially in manga, this felt right. A lot progresses, quickly, speeding up and accomplishing a lot in comparison to the great fight scenes from the previous volume. Seeing Gaara brought low, and seeing a hint of what he will later become, was nice, but the funeral served more than a few functions, too.
And then, if we were wondering where we could turn to next for plot, we've got Itachi, the man Sasuke must kill.
I tell you, this whole story gets so much better AFTER you know what's going to eventually happen. Spoilers are nothing. The tale holds so damn well no matter what.
Well, this was sad. Also this was going to be a 4 or 4.5 but I changed to 5 just because of a certain villain that showed up. Even on the show the reveal was perfect. But still, I think I got a new favorite villain to add to my growing list of favorite anime characters or villains, etc. Of course this volume was pretty good.
I have to say, especially with long series, once a series will reach a peak of awesomeness with a certain volume or episode, it then tends to be on a downhill slope, at least for a little while. So I'm glad to say that, even after giving volume 15 such a high rating, I enjoyed this next one just as much. Since the pulishing of this volume, Naruto has continued on for quite a long time, adding new plot points and other awesome battles, but even now, the showdown between Naruto and Gaara is still one of my all-time favorite battles in this series. The emotions fit in so well, and I love being able to see connections between the protagonist and whoever s/he's fighting. It just adds more to the character of the villain. And the connection between Gaara and Naruto has always been one of the strongest relationships in this series. The Hokage's funeral added some more deep life lessons, and things didn't slow down at all what with getting our first real introduction to Itachi in the same chapter. All in all, volume 16 was an excellent follow-up.
Operation Destroy Konoha has been thwarted due to the incredible comeback of Konoha's Ninjas, Naruto's decisive victory against Gaara and Third Hokage's sacrifice to defeat Orochimaru. With Hokage's seat being vacant, the entire Konohagakure is in turmoil and in need of another powerful shinobi to fill in the position of Hokage. Meanwhile, a shady organization known as "The Akatsuki" has infiltrated the Village Hidden in the Leaves to kidnap Naruto.
Omg, Itachi is a duplicate copy of young Sasuke and just as cool. I can't wait for his full power showdown!

Notice how I have yet to give any volume anything less than 5 stars? This is because this series was a miraculous work of art for a very, very long time. You'll see me give some bad reviews, but not for a long time down the line. It won't be until we approach the end of the whole manga. That's a pretty excellent record if you ask me.
While this is supposed to serve as an aftermath to the big events in volume 15, it however quickly gets to the next big threat and the introduction of this new villain is marvelous.
Just when you think things will calm down, Masashi Kishimoto sets up the foundation for some big reveals to come and things only get more exciting with each page.
BRUTAL. DIOS.
The finale to Naruto and Gaara comes quickly, but I like the emotional connection there. Both alone, with a demon inside them, lashing out, and Naruto finds a way to connect to Gaara even after all these years. We then get an epilogue with Konoha trying to recover from the attacks, as well as the introduction of Itachi- Sasuke's older brother, and a powerful villain. The Konoha Invasion arc comes to an end quickly as we move right into the next arc, dealing with its fallout by switching up the flow. It's not about Team 7 anymore, it's got the characters starting to split off and find their own way. It's a bit refreshing, but so far hasn't done anything with that.
It's neat to see Sasuke's mind warping after the previous arc. Naruto, who he was always better than, has grown stronger than Sasuke can believe! The curse mark, his quickest way to getting stronger, overpowers him and crushes him! Itachi, his older brother, is now appearing in the village! He's getting desparate, and is certainly a more interesting character than Naruto at this point in time. Naruto gets to be the hero, for sure, but I don't get what his character arc is supposed to be other than just getting stronger constantly.
The aftermath of Orochimaru's attack is a tad too long-winded for my tastes, hammering the message in with way too much force and zeal.
But.
Kishimoto wastes no time in introducing another threat, this time directly against Naruto. Itachi's arrival is timely and while the fight scenes are somewhat awkward, due to so much of them playing out in contestants' minds (reminding me of the less exciting wuxia tropes ;)) the general feeling of raising the stakes is palpable.
Jiraya and Kakashi continue to be the strong points of the series, but it's Naruto that continues to hold my attention. On to the next volume!
Well the Operation Destroy Konaha arc has officially wrapped up but not with out some serious consequences for the village. Our band of ninja mourn the loss of a beloved leader and try to repair Konaha. However lurking in the background some new villainous faces are making them selves known!!!
- Naruto defeats Gaara - Naruto used his Talk no Jutsu to spark some consciousness in Gaara - Kankuro and Temari took Gaara away - Hiruzen used his last strength to seal Orochimaru but he only can seal Orochimaru's hand. - Hiruzen died. - The Konoha crush plan come to end. - Few days later, Itachi and Kisame appeared in Konoha to find Naruto - Kakashi, Asuma and Kurenai confront both of them. Might Guy came to join the fight. - Jiraiya was appointed as the next hokage. He proposed more suitable person, Tsunade. - Jiraiya and Naruto went for a trip to find Tsunade.
Just when we thought that the danger on village is over as Orochimaru and sand nins leave, a new danger arrives. The introduction of Akatsuki (It is a Japanese word for "dawn", that is interesting).
There were lots of great moments in this volume. The funeral of Third Hokage, The fearsome strength of Itachi Uchiha. The change in Gaara after his fight with Naruto. All of these scenes were arranged beautifully. This series is not over yet and the questions also remains of what Orochimaru will do next... This series is just getting better and better.
I just adore this series soooo much. I love every character. This volume however, introduces a few new characters...one we've heard about before and shows the reader just how powerful they are. I can't wait to read the next one and I loved revisiting this part of the story even though it is definitely very sad. Favorite for sure.
Naruto vs Gaara they both very similar yet very diffent. This is why I love mangas, there are zillions cool characters on them. The Villains and the heroes are amazing
Operation Destroy Konaha comes to an end in this volume and, for the first time, creator Masashi Kishimoto seems rushed in the construction of the plot (and also the art; Panel 4, Page 89 - when read right to left - is the most slapdash illustration to appear in the series so far). The story jumps from scene to scene and time to time so often and abruptly that the storytelling borders on confusion in places. Still, this is Naruto. His and Gaara's battle culminates with Gaara getting a glimpse of understanding about sacrifice and love. An important leader also puts that idea into action and pays for it with his life. The volume also introduces Sasuke's older brother Uchiha Itachi, a malevolent threat to Naruto and Sasuke; even Kakashi is no match for him. Hurried execution aside, this is another exciting episode in a grand epic.
