Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

Orochimaru's entrance. What a fantastically creepy villain, and what an awesome nostalgia moment for me.

We also get to see team 7's genin fail, stand back up, shine, and eventually fall again. I love these rough patches. When these guys shine, they really shine hard. Sasuke was good, Naruto was better, but when Sakura decides that she's had enough, my heart really soars.

Sakura is kinda weak and only a little funny in all the manga that came before, being technically good but low in spirit.

That changes here, and how beautiful it is. :)

Great stuff. I remember first watching the anime about 12 years ago. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to start the manga. Bringing me back.

An official introduction of Orochimaru as he finds interest in Sasuke and burdens him with a brand new quest. Really intrigued by what he plans on doing with him in the long run.

Sakura also finally gets some respect put on her name here! About time, girl!

As for Naruto... Complete baffoon here. Guess he already had his big moment for now!

The transformation of Sakura!

On a side note, I hate the whole basis or the rivalry between Ino and Sakura. I hate that Sakura is merely identified throught the first volumes by her crush on Sasuke, but I guess this is supposed to be a phase she matures out from, right?

10/10 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Okay, back to the good stuff. Orochimaru makes his great entrance, Sakura finally shows some spine (high time!), and Naruto gets swept aside to make space for the other two with a few well-aimed blows. Orochimaru already shapes up to be a formidable enemy. Maybe a bit too much on the nose, that snake-man, but hey! We're talking about a world where you can create thousands of physical doppelgangers from your chakra alone ;).

Ino's and Sakura's backstory was mildly interesting if painfully stereotypical, but I enjoyed the final result.

Epic battles and Sakura's finest moment... possibly ever.

The second part of the chunin exam will take place in a training ground known as the "Forest of Death" and it's pretty creepy. Not only do we get to see the skills of many new ninja, but we're introduced to the big bad of the original series in all his creepy tongued, pedophilic glory. Also, Sakura stops crying and acts like a NINJA.

We also learn that Ino and Sakura aren't friends anymore because they both have crushes on the same guy, who doesn't actually give a shit.

Vol. 6, Chapters 46-54

This is a really important volume. The Chunin Exams as a whole is an epic part of the series, but there's some specific moments within it that are extra memorable, and this volume as quite a few.

Orochimaru (A main villian and Leaf missing-nin) appears and gives Sasuke a curse mark, which you will learn more about later on. This is a big deal and really sets the stage for one of the big story arcs later on.

Sakura has a character defining moment, and you also get to see some background story between her and Ino. Lee also shows up and is just awesome.

Just as action packed and fun as I remembered. Love this development for Sakura, and the general buildup in all the fights is great.

When I was a teen and received monthly Shonen Jump, I notoriously missed out on the issue containing Rock Lee's fight with the Sound Shinobi because of a lapse in subscription date. It had not occurred to me that I still hadn't read those chapters until I read them now and realized, 'huh, this is new to me'. So that was an exciting experience!

Overall, I find myself falling back in love with an old favorite manga series of mine.

I am hoping with all my heart that this is a turning point for Sakura. A bit of bravery looks so good on her, much better than her long hair ever did.

And I just know Orochimaru is going to be such an awful and amazing villain, can’t wait.

12 year old Naruto Uzumaki is an orphan with a nine-tailed demon fox sealed inside of him. Despite this, he's determined to become the strongest ninja in his village and earn the title of Hokage. Action scenes are good and interspersed with enough dialogue as to not get repetitive or boring in the Hunger Games (a.k.a. the second part of the chunin exams). Orochimaru is fantastically creepy, maybe more so in the manga than in the anime, where the art is less detailed.

AND FINALLY, Sakura gets the screen time she needs. Not only does the story acknowledge her lackluster performance so far, but this scene is touching in a number of ways and it really gives the story new life. This volume destroys its predecessors in terms of realistic and interesting character development. Woohoo!

Worth noting are the love triangles mixed into all of this -- there are almost too many to be believable. I'm curious to see how these change and expand over time.

I probably would have loved 'Naruto' as a teenager, but jumping back in as a 27-year-old, this volume felt shallow and bland. The nonstop action is difficult to follow and padded out like a fight from 'Dragon Ball Z', while the characters remain underdeveloped clichés—Naruto the bratty underdog, Sasuke the brooding pretty boy, and Sakura, who does little beyond moan and crush on Sasuke.

Though I regret missing the chance to grow up with the series and appreciate its cultural impact, six volumes in, I still don’t care about the characters. While I’ve enjoyed moments of comedy and character-driven stories, this is clearly aimed at a younger audience, and it’s just not for me.

This book was awesome! I liked how there was a lot of action and it has a good setting for the story. I also think that there should be color in the book because I can't tell what is what because it's all black and white. Either way, this book was cool, I want to read more of these later!

Notes:
The fact that sasuke recognizes naruto's clone is seconds. Knows he's right handed and how he Carrie's his shoulder holster. And the fact that he didnt have the same cut on his cheek. Like damnnn son. And he knew the second time that it's his clones based on the fact that naruto wouldn't ever remmeber the password is just ahahajja.

Ugahahahaha oruchimaru and his creepy ass snake tongue thingggg!! Why is this fucker so fucking gross and creepy all the fucing time??? Like boy can you fucking notttt??? Please put that tongue back in yo mouth son.

And the fact that naruto respects sasuke for his strength and courage and refuses to believe he would give up the scroll to get away. I just cabt! That it's this that eggs him to release the power of the 9 tails for the 2nd time.

And sasuke cant belive his eyes and the power radiating off of him. This is the arc that sets off everything in the future including sasuke and naruto's rivalry and their diverging paths in life.

Sakura finally steps up this volume and fights when the boys are down finally letting go of her vanity and taking that first step to be a real ninja. Her rivalry with Ino is one of the most pettist thing in this manga and I hate it. Stop putting up girls against girls and making them.gate each other over boys that's disgusting. I'm glad this is a step towards mending their broken friendship once again and being rivals in skills rather than love.

Rock lee continues to be brialliant and I love this hot with my whole heart and soul! Never change rock lee. Girls who make fun of your eyebrows and bowl cut hair ain't shit.

I like how Kishi distanced himself from the obvious Hunter x Hunter inspiration. At first, it seemed a little derivative, but this arc finds its own unique feet after a while. Orochimaru does a good job of bringing an original flare to the narrative. He's a spectacular villain.

This one gives me anxiety! Orochimaru is not to be played with. He's such a nasty villain. But oh, sweet Sakura finally finds her feet and realized that she has a place on this team too. I have to keep in mind that none of them are superheroes, and my faves won't win every battle. Still, it's hard to watch them struggle!
