Goblin Slayer makes good on a promise to go on a "proper adventure," but it seems he has a one track mind, as always. He and his companions accept a quest from Sword Maiden that takes them deep into a labyrinthine sewer...
Story: So after the great defense of the farm attack, things slow down. The Goblin Hunter is wanting to do more adventuring with his new crew of weirdo friends. So he recruits them to go under the main city to kill some goblins. Sounds easy, right? However, the one who sent him and his gang there might have something evil planned out!
Art: Remains solid. There's one awesome shot of a new villain that I love the design. Also, everything moves quickly in fights and just as brutal as ever.
Enjoyment: I dug the later half of this volume. The new villain who appears at the end looks like a lot of fun for the next volume. I enjoyed watching the Goblin Slayer work and the way he takes out goblin home bases is awesome. I also enjoyed getting to know the other characters and of course seeing even the Goblin Slayer grow as a character.
What didn't work: This is a HUGE slowdown from the last volume. One whole chapter is basically just typical JRPG talking to take the quest. Wasn't fun or interesting, and not sure why it had to take so long. The carnage is toned down and slowed down to a point I was bored a bit.
Overall, a slower volume than I had hope for. While not the best volume it's still entertaining at points and the 2nd half brings it up a bit. A 3 out of 5.
After all the mayhem from the previous volume, i was expecting for the story to slowdown a bit, and that's what happened here. The story is still really good, and i'm liking more and more the dynamic of the party. Because of the way this volume ended, it seems that the next one it's gonna be really fun.
I feel ilke there was more comedy in this volume, and it was provided by the High Elf, i really liked it. A new character is introduce here, and i don't know whay to think of her yet but, she's very hot xD.
Overall, Even with the slowdown, i'm liking this a lot.
this volume was beautiful as usual, the chara design of Sword Maiden is amazing, it makes me want to draw fanart. The way the women are designed is just so beautiful and sexy, it's great. Some of the illustrations really have an epic feel to them, breathtaking ! As for the story, this volume was less epic than the previous ones so it wasn't my favorite but I'm still really enjoying the overall story.
Owing High Elf Archer a real adventure Goblin Slayer (here after known as GS) joins her and the others as they briefly explore an ancient ruin hidden in the trees. Thankfully for GS it was also the perfect place for his favorite pass time and he brilliantly dispatches some goblin before returning home and having a civil conversation with Cow Girl. With the level of violence and serious material including forced intercourse from goblins it is these small moments in between the murder sprees that allow us more character building and a break from the tension that slowly rides.
Asked to help her GS accompanies Guild Girl to a promotion interview where we get to see Guild Girl who often times seem a little bubbly around GS looking grimly serious as she figures out the little secrets of the Scout she is interviewing. Turns out Scout might look charming but when backed into a corner shows some rather dark thoughts that he did not act on but I find myself wondering if he is going to be a big old thorn in the side of our heroes in the future.
Finding a quest from the legendary hero Sword Maiden, GS gathers his crew and makes their way to another city where the Sword Maiden awaits them in the Temple of the Supreme God. There is trouble brewing under the streets of the city and once again prejudices and underestimations of the goblin threat have left the job to GS to do what he does best. Let me tell you cheerful banter is not what he is good at. :)
Using various tricks to handle threats against them and discovering the goblins are unusually well equipped and supplied all clues point to a greater mastermind. Could it be the goblin discovered at the end of this volume or is even that goblin's strings being pulled by a greater power. Only time will tell.
My favorite part of the book would probably be seeing High Elf Archer looking so happy in the beginning of the book as GS is taken to the ruins. She is trying to share this majestic place and of course the only real thing he has on his mind is goblins and slaying. I am sure some of you younger readers might prefer the bath scene much farther in the book though. :)
I was introduced to this series as a fantasy that 'makes monsters monstrous again'. I definitely think this true, and it definitely makes the story feel fresher than of the goblins were somehow victims of ill-defined sociopolitical forces.
What surprised me most is how well this structure facilitates a thorough examination of the theme of sexual violence: Early on I thought "Well if the goblins are doing these horrible horrible things and everyone knows about it, it doesn't quite make sense that there isn't a public outcry against them. Especially if, as the story keeps telling us, goblins are comparativly easy to take care of and a large percentage of adventurers are female."
I don't think I "got" it until the conversation between the Archbishop and the Goblin Slayer: Everyone sees the problem as something that happens to somebody else. Even when there is a high-profile victim and everyone feels sorry for her, most people can't really empathize unless they've been confronted with the problem personally.
As far as the illustrations: There are some aspects of the design I think are kind of silly (particularly in regard to the design of the female main characters) but I recognize this makes each of them distinct as individuals. Overall I think it does a much better job at characterizing them than the description in the light novels.
Overall I see this series as a suprisingly well thought out dissection of why sexual violence is pervasive. I definitely think it's not for kids, in fact I think there are plenty of perverted adults who will use it to make rape jokes. They should probably stay away from it too.
In a nutshell, volume 4 of Goblin Slayer is enjoyable. It's nothing extraordinary, but certainly not bad, either. It starts with a look into how promotions work in the Adventurer's Guild, and introduces a character that will most likely show back up at some point, so it's not just a throwaway side story. The bulk of the volume focuses on a quest the party receives to exterminate the goblins who are living in the sewers under a large city. And I have to hand it to the author for making the "sewer mission" trope actually interesting. The combat throughout this section is fun, and well-drawn, and we get to see just how cunning the goblins can be with traps, and adaptations to their environment. There are hints of something bigger at work behind the scenes, but what it is hasn't been revealed yet.
Volume 4 does end on something of a cliffhanger, which is nice. Because, while the fight scenes are nicely illustrated and engaging, and the foreshadowing of a nebulous doom lurking in the (perhaps not so distant) future are nice and all, this volume doesn't really do much that we haven't seen before, when you get down to it. Ending the book in the middle of a quest provides a little extra incentive to keep reading, if the wholesale slaughter of goblins is starting to lose its luster. Of course, volume 5 is probably going to pick right up with more of the same, but at least this is a longer quest that has the potential to throw some more surprises at us.
The insight into the promotion process started out interesting... I thought it would require a fellow adventurer to weigh in, but in the end it was fully a guild bureaucrat’s decision. GS was merely on guard duty. And just how much is a “bag of gold”? How big is the bag, how full is the gold? Is it coins, trinkets, or powder? There really is a problem with an ambiguous reward like that... It’s probably a good thing Shield Maiden is blind so she can’t see how scandalously she’s drawn (and that’s before the pointless bath scene—of course she knew about the goblins she initiated the fookin’ quest, priestess)! Sewer goblin pirates are fun, as is a giant sewer gator! The old canary in the coal mine tactic makes an appearance. The bonus prose story was especially bad this time.
Goblin Slayer and his party members set off to the capital to assist the Sword Maiden (a former gold-ranking adventurer who serves the Temple of Law's Archbishop) request and find themselves investigating a labyrinth of a sewer network beneath the city in search of who or what are attacking the citizens of the city.
Also, Pirate Goblins, that is all...

This volume features an unanimated story as Goblin Slayer helps Guild Girl with some interviews. It's interestinhg to see him do something other than slay goblins which is made possible by his friends trying to hlep him get out of his comfort zone. From there, Goblin Slayer receives a mission from the legendary Sword Maiden to do what he does best.
This is the start of a new adventure for Sir Goblin Slayer and his accompanying party and while it was a cracking read it didn't have the same fast paced setting as the last book. It felt less dramatic than before, but it was still a great addition to the series.
After slaying goblins, the brothers go to slay more to anothe hood where an arch bishop gal with beautiful hair resides. They find that goblins were living in the underground city where they kept ballin
The first three novels have served as a good basis for where the series intends to direct itself (at least for the time being), the art is clear, defined and detailed.
Saw the anime wanted to read the manga. Been very interesting seeing all the little details that weren’t in the show it makes the world of Goblin slayer so much bigger.
