Years ago, Callaghan McCarthy wrote a bestselling ghost story which allowed her to escape her train-wreck of a marriage. Now her inspiration has run dry, and her bank-account is fast following in its wake. In a desperate last-ditch effort to come up with a sequel, she has loaded everything she owns into her car and set off across the country to seek inspiration at a bed and breakfast she’s been told is haunted.
She doesn’t actually believe in ghosts, of course. The ghosts who haunt Vale House find this highly amusing. They have been expecting her, and they need her help with a problem of their own.
As Cally comes to know and love the eccentric denizens of the run-down southern town the locals call Woodley USA, she realizes she has wandered into the middle of a host of secrets nobody will talk about in front of people who are Not From Around Here. While a disembodied internet entity, the ghost of a teenage Taino pirate, and a mysterious gentleman who is not quite human, himself, attempt to help her understand her new role among them, she begins to understand that saving Vale House and saving herself are one and the same.
Kim Beall writes contemporary Gothic Fantasy set in liminal places which may or may not resemble any one of the small, southern towns she calls home. In such spaces between worlds, grown-ass adults can stumble into magic and wonder and, if they are determined enough, may even be able to save it.
She writes for adults who steadfastly refuse to outgrow their natural yearning for enchantment and who still believe, not so deep inside, that it is possible to find real magic in everyday life.
This lighthearted ghost story has the right amount of suspense with elements of humor and wordplay. She has created a cast of distinctive characters of the sort we've come to hope for in the southern gothic tradition. It is refreshing to find romance blossoming among older adults, too.
I hope that subsequent volumes, and there will surely be some, will bring the main character, Cally, up to speed and not as obtuse as she sometimes seemed. There were times I wanted to shake her. She came through when it counted, much to her credit, albeit a little reluctantly. Or maybe that's just my impatience shining through.
This is a book to tuck into your beach bag and enjoy.
Unique setting and captivating characters. I couldn't put it down. Got it and finished it in the same day.
Fantastically descriptive prose created a mental picture of the unique town where main character, Cally, finds herself, and the town's residents. I started reading, and couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what was in store for Cally and who these people were. Were they friends or foes? Now I know!
Really enjoyed the mix of otherworldly elements, ghosts, the underlying mysteries, and the positive relationships depicted between [some] characters.
What a fun book. Great characters. Great dialogue. Great settings and scenes. Lots of twists and turns in a world both grounded in reality and mysticism. Kim Beall leads you down a road that, just when you think you know where it may head next, unexpectedly veers to the right. So much fun.
I loved this book. You will too. I can't wait to read the next in the series, Moonlight and Moss.
A fun read. I enjoyed following Cally along her path. What she finds in Woodley opens up a world of possibilities in my head. Good ghost stories and mysterious events combine to create an entire world of which we get just tantalizing glimpses.
