The Archive of Magic is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the second movie in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
I did buy the first one two years ago because I’m a sucker for finding out more about prop-making, the actors, how the sets were designed, what the design concepts for the costumes looked like vs how it looked in the movie in the end, the CGI used and, of-course, wanted to know more about the beasts as well. I didn‘t know there would be one for the second movie as well, but really should have known.
Once again, we get a book with a magnetic clasp and photographs of high quality (which still doesn‘t excuse the exorbitant price).
Sadly, I have to confess that I didn‘t like the movie. The story, character developments and several other major elements were just wrong. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the movies are of very high quality and the crew is a highly-trained group that makes the wizarding world come to life like few other sceneries on screen. Therefore, I couldn‘t resist and read this book (no, I didn‘t buy it).
As with the first book, this is a bit like a smashbook. Thus, in addition to the photographs from the sets and movie scenes, we also get little identity cards, Credence‘s adoption certificate, newspapers, maps and posters that can be taken out or which fold out so it is quite the nice reading experience.
As in the first book, we have chapters about the main characters (some known from the first, some new), the different settings, the magical objects (yes, wands as well), and creatures. I think it‘s best to show you:
So yes, it is beautiful but considering that I didn‘t love the movie (story-wise) and how expensive this is, I‘m not sad to not have bought it. I want the magic, I want to be spellbound - neither of which happened, but at least this was interesting and done with a lot of really cool attention to detail.
Kontennya, gambar-gambarnya, cuplikannya, apalagi perintilannya. Bonus poster-posternya, bonus card, bonus postcard... ya ampun cakep banget 😭😭😭
Kertasnya bahkan bagusss. Kayak majalah. Full color pula.
I've received this one as a Christmas present from my amazing boyfriend and, even though I didn't like the movie AT ALL, this book is so well done! I work in the TV and movie industry, so it's always interesting to me to read how a particular movie or scene were made and how all the different departments worked in order to achieve the final result. Even my little sister, who's not an HP fan, was very interested in this book and wanted me asked me if she could borrow it!
This is a very well put together companion piece to the movie in question.
The book is short in pages, but surprisingly detailed for its length. There are interviews with a variety of cast and crew, presenting their thoughts of the process of making the film itself. This book goes into most detail when discussing costumes and set design, which was truly a delight to read. Pages are taken up by pictures of props - sketches of the different way sets were designed, and the details of various things only glimpsed in the film. Of particular delight to me were the newspaper headlines and advertisements in the film. Also, the posters for the "freaks" at Circus Arcana.
The amount of practical effects in this film were truly astounding, as was the attention to detail in general. The descriptions, and photos, truly emphasized just how much work went into making the world as believable as it was. It was eye-opening, as was the ingenious way the carriage and broomstick chase scene was filmed, and the visual magic of the French Ministry.
While the text in some parts was lacking - are you seriously calling Grindelwald Dumbledore's close friend? - for the most part this was a very beautiful, and intensely fun read. I can see this being a great part of any Potterhead's collection.
Beautiful, quality cover and pages detailing the efforts, research, and artwork going into such an enormous production! There are shots from the films and concept art created before filming had even begun. I especially love reading about the design of sets to fit 1920s Paris, with magical accents here and there! There is some mention of homage to the Harry Potter films. That feeling when we first entered Diagon Alley with Harry was recalled to mind by a Wizarding street full of Parisian shops that I was overjoyed to peak into! I have to say, excerpts written by or quoting actors Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law were most heartwarming. However, I left off one star, because I thought the writing by Signe Berstrom was uninteresting. It just lacked the style of Mark Salisbury, who wrote ‘The Case Of Beasts’. Happily, both books were designed by MinaLima! The graphic art duo could make anything into a work of art, old street signs, labels, newsprint, and books, of course! Eduardo Lima and Miraphora Mina have filled every inch of the pages with their inspiration and I absolutely adore it all!

Another addition to my Potterhead clan. The book goes very in depth behind the scenes, has a lot of fun designs and attachment pieces plus the pictures, sketches, arts, notes are all very interesting! This book is more like a piece of art. The book is thick and chalk full of little nuggets. Movie replicas that you can hold. It feels as though you own a piece from the magical world. Great for the collectors. Another good book from Mina Lima.
Of all this year’s books we’ve read and reviewed at borg in 2018, more than 100 all told, we’re hard-pressed to find one that matches the beauty of design in The Archive of Magic – The Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, a new elaborately designed and detailed look at the film, the story, and the production of the new fantasy film from the mind of J.K. Rowling. Not only is the photograph reproduction quality superb, every page incorporates the style of the film, created by the very designers who made the images for the film. That’s MinaLima–the dynamic art duo of Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima–who also designed props for the Harry Potter movies as well as a new series of classic book reprints.
Writer/editor Signe Bergstrom provides several textual elements that make The Archive of Magic stand out. She presents the narrative of the story itself in a way that will help moviegoers understand the sequence of events in the densely packed film. She also incorporates in-world elements, like examining new characters and story elements, and she steps out of the fantasy and interviews the film’s creative staff, writers, and actors, to provide an in-depth guide through the production. Readers will find final as-filmed versions of costumes and set production, in contrast with The Art of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which consists primarily of pre-production concept artwork (see our review here yesterday).
The Archive of Magic takes the paper ephemera book tie-in concept that has exploded in the past three years to another level. Included are several reproductions of paper props that were key to the story, not merely set dressing, but the book also includes tipped-in reproductions of set dressing, too, created by the artists who made the very props seen in the film–for any past Harry Potter universe film replica props like this would sell for at least $10-20 each. It begins with a deluxe hardcover, magnetic wraparound cover with gold embossed Art Nouveau designs. Included are Leta Lestrange’s note she finds in the Ministry Records Room, a 3D-lenticular photo identification card for Newt Scamander, a book mark incorporating Grindelwald’s logo on paper stock like that seen in the film, Credence Barebone’s dual-sided birth certificate, Queenie’s postcard from Tina, the Spellbound magazine that incorrectly reports on a Newt Scamander/Leta Lestrange engagement, Nicolas Flamel’s business card that Dumbledore gives to Newt, Butter Beer logo label stickers, six reproduced newspaper pages, and two folded, full-size circus posters.
The book also includes an introduction by new Dumbledore actor Jude Law. Props, costume swatch boards, creatures, double-page photo spreads, and full-color images that most moviegoers missed on the big screen–this is a must for fans of the Harry Potter universe and the art of MinaLima.
The Archive of Magic – The Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is available now from Harper Design.
This was a wonderful, highly enlightening book that delved deep into the making, and story, behind the Crimes of Grindlewald. I would recommend either reading the book, or seeing the film before reading this book however.
Each chapter focused on either a separate character, location or other important plot point. With regards to the characters, we got to learn about their costumes, how they had evolved from the first Fantastic Beasts, some major events they participated in and much more. We also got to hear the actor's thoughts about playing these incredible people in the Wizarding World. My two favorite entries were Dumbledore and Newt.
The chapters about the creatures were fun as well. We learned a little about the movie making process that brought them to life, and how they propelled the story.
The photography, art, and pullouts, which included posters, ID cards and more, added so much to the already incredible text. It was an engaging book, that kept you interested. It was written in a very approachable way and you wanted to keep reading.
This book has EVERYTHING and is the ultimate, magical experience for fans of FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD. There are a lot of interactive items that just make the book like newspaper articles, There's a bookmark attached to it that's a cool touch.
I absolutely love the notice at the beginning. I think my favorite thing is Newt's Ministry of Magic Identity card because it looks like his face is moving in it! There's just so many amazing things: the Paris post card, the Spellbound article, and so much more!
THE ARCHIVE OF MAGIC is epic and contains pictures and information about all of my favorite characters from the Crimes of Grindelwald. It was exciting not knowing what surprise was coming up next. It makes me want to watch the movie again.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to all fans of Fantastic Beasts and the Harry Potter franchise.
Slightly strange title aside (one book does not an archive make, and they haven't rebranded previous titles), this was a pretty solid addition to the growing collection of books about the Harry Potter films. It isn't quite as in depth as From Page to Screen, which explores almost every scene in the original HP film series, but it definitely has more quality content than some of the lighter reads. I found the organization to be a touch haphazard, since we see character bios scattered throughout, but somehow the flow of reading wasn't interrupted too much as we were introduced to various subjects and concepts as they came up alongside the story in the film. Hopefully they continue publishing on the remainder of the films in this same style, and then do a big compendium volume in the style of From Page to Screen, since that would give readers an adequate exploration of the film universe.
This is a behind the scenes look at the second film in the Fantastic Beasts film series and it is another fantastic addition to the Wizarding World collection! I would have liked more physical props, as I noticed there wasn’t as many as some of the others. But nevertheless, it is a gorgeous designed book with excellent features. I love these types of books and will add this to my growing collection!
WOW! What an amazing book! I loved this so much and it really gave me a great insight to all of the incredibly hard work that goes into making these films. I loved the extras thrown in there such as the posters and stickers etc. The book is beautifully designed and set out really well.
Would definitely recommend if you are a fan of the films!
I never thought that in my life I would read a book about the backstage of a movie, right Annie? WRONG! Since I received this book as a gift from a friend, I decided to give it a chance and I didn't regret it. This book is passionate. Full of minimalist details and colorful pages, we dive deeper into J.K. Rowling's fantastic world of magic and witchcraft and fantastic beasts.
I usually love books like this, the behind the scenes of how movies like this get made. Case in point, I love the 6 book series, two for each movie, dedicated to the Hobbit trilogy even if Jackson royally screwed up the films. This one however? A bunch of superficial fluff that does not really actually describe the movie making or if it does, only brief glimpses of it. I do not recommend.
Coyer Winter Back To Basics This is a gorgeous companion book to the Fantastic Beasts sequel. It's a combination of behind the scenes info and documents from within the world of the movie like circus posters and Newt's magical ID card, A really nice collectible book.
I was looking forward to watching The Secrets of Dumbledore so reading this book was a good way to become familiar with the characters in the Fantastic Beasts series.
This is a wonderful book full of pictures and inside stories about the actors and the people involved in these movies.
