Awkward: A sexy romantic comedy!

Rate this book
Ladies,

I know how things look from the outside. I’m rich. I’m a successful surgeon. I’m handsome. I should have women lining up from here to New Jersey clawing for space in my bed, but there’s one huge catch.

I’m f*cking awkward.

Every time I get a date, I spoil it. Asked if she’s pregnant? Check. Forgot her name? Check. Bought a meat lover’s pizza for my vegan girlfriend? Check, check, check.

This is why my best friend, romance fanatic Allie Jenkins, has declared that she’s swooping in to save the day. She’s prepared a list of required reading straight from The Ripped Bodice, and I’m supposed to take notes, learn from the best, and put that shit into action. After all, practice makes perfect, right?

Wrong.

2,5 max, but definitely not 3 - just meh!

Nearly all of us love a well-written friends-to-lovers books but unfortunately they are rarely well-executed.

For me to love it, there should be a convincing “switch of feelings” from being friends to lovers so that I can believe in it. But mostly, writers choose the easy way out. For example, he sees his best friend in a sexy dress (or she sees him in a suit or better shirtless) and suddenly he asks himself why he never saw her in that way before (or she asks why she never realized he was so hot).

Come on, a dress, or a suit making all the difference? Really??? Didn’t you look at your friend carefully before?

In such silly “switch of feelings” cases, I fail to relate to the characters and their story.

***********************************************

Sometimes, they say to themselves they have always wanted her/him but never dared to try to switch the friendship to a romantic one, fearing the other one wouldn’t want it. And mostly, these characters are blind and/or dumb, thinking that the other one sees them as a sibling.

Come on, can’t you see it in the eyes, or in some other acts of your best friend? I mean you cannot always act, sometimes, feelings are reflected upon your face, the way you look or the way you talk… Right? Don’t be blind or dumb!

***********************************************

And sometimes, these best friends just don’t act upon it for many years for fear of losing the friendship. This… I really don’t get this reason at all!!!

My happily ever after comes before my friendship and if there is a hope of a HEA for me with my best friend, I’d rather focus on the probability of it than the fear of losing my friend.

When you fear of losing your friend, don't you realize that you are actually losing your -potential-love-of your life? Think again!

***********************************************

To cut it short, if the story goes in one of these ways, I do not like it much.

And sadly, this one was no special.

***********************************************

Here is how it goes:

Jake is a rich and famous surgeon and Allie is a kindergarten teacher, trying to make ends meet.

Jake is very hopeless in romantic relationships and Allie starts to give him romantic advice/romance lessons for his future dates.

This is how the book begins.

And then, while Jake is listening to Allie criticize his dating manners, he looks at her in her sexy white dress and boom! an epiphany hits him!

I’ve shoved any feelings I might have for her into a closet marked with the words The Friend Zone in big fat permanent marker. Or at least, they had been behind lock and key until tonight when I’d laid eyes on her, and things had shifted into place. Dressed to kill and smiling in the way only Allie Jenkins can smile, I realized I wanted more than friendship with her.

And she gets another “epiphany” when she sees him shirtless another day.

Usually, Jack sleeps in a t-shirt and shields my tender eyes from his dazzling abdomen. But not this morning. He either lost his shirt or forgot about it, and that dazzling body is sending synapses firing to my girl parts. Along with everywhere else.

***********************************************

Because the way they started to focus on their romantic feelings wasn’t convincing for me and the switch wasn’t smooth, I couldn’t enjoy the rest of the story.

The abrupt switch of their feelings was supported with some vague explanations, though, such as they always had feelings for each other but they were buried deep inside. Humph!

***********************************************

And just when they can have it all, when he has confessed how much he wants her and loves her, our heroine has second thoughts for a while, pushing him away.

That was beyond annoying for me. I hate crap thoughts and stupid sacrifices such as, “Oh he is a surgeon, I am a kindergarten teacher, he deserves someone better – someone as smart, as rich and as important. I shouldn’t prevent his rise in the society.” blah bla… Oh I really really hate it when this happens.

***********************************************

Also, the family’s interference (especially the hero’s mother’s) was more than awkward. His stance was good whereas hers was not because she quickly started to question her self-worth.

***********************************************

Lastly, the use of romance books and literature in it and use of her blog posts were not effectively done. Moreover, her romance lessons were meaningless.

I wish the writer had chosen one of these tools and focused on that one to execute it in the best way possible rather than throwing all three into the story and not making any of them significant and impressive enough!

The blog post was childish, the romance lessons were mostly one sentence-advice or some match-making. And the literary references were there but not there :))) I mean, she tells him to go and read "Pride and Prejudice" but what he should get from the book is not mentioned at all. She just says, “read this and read that” – no depth, no real reference to one specific scene or event in those books.

And the Cindrella’s shoes reference was over the top in my opinion.

***********************************************

As for safety, there is no cheating, it is totally safe.
It is a safe light fun book that feels like a Harlequin romance actually – very simple, I mean.

***********************************************

As you can see, many things felt short for me in this friends-to-lovers story.

For better executions of friends-to-lovers, I can recommend the following:

Black Swan Affair by K.L. Kreig (Stand-alone / not safe)

Here's to Falling by Christine Zolendz (Stand-alone / not safe)

Priceless (Forbidden Men, #8) by Linda Kage (Part of a series. There are different characters in each book but I recommend you read the ones before Book 8 to see how they meet and how their friendship develops, although it is not a must) - (Safe)

THAT WAS SO HOT.

Awkward was my first Lily Kate book, and it will not be my last. I decided to read this one as it had the potential for a decent story, only for it to win me over before the end of the first chapter.

Awkward is one of those books that grabs you hard and refuses to let go. You’re sucked into the story, and before you know what has happened you’ve finished the book in a single sitting. I’m no stranger to finishing a book in a single sitting, but such was not my plan for this one. Awkward was supposed to offer me a reprieve from the book I was finding difficult to read, a way to hold off on a reading slump – I was not supposed to consume it in a single sitting. Even when I realised what was happening, how quickly I was working through this one, I found myself unable to put the book down. It begged to be finished, and finish it I did.

In truth, this is more of a four-point-five-star rating than the four-star rating I gave the book. I very rarely round up such ratings, but there were a few moments where I considered rounding up. The only reason I didn’t is because of my overly picky ways, and how there were a couple of points where things seemed to lull somewhat. It was nothing major, but it was enough for me to hold off on my rounding up.

For anyone looking for a fabulous rom-com, I certainly recommend picking this up. It mixes truly humorous moments (I laughed so long and loud throughout this book I was waiting for the neighbours to complain) with the wonderfully sweet. One moment you will fear you’re going to pee your pants from laughter, then next you fear your heart is going to beat right out of your chest. Add in some steamy moments, and we have exactly what you want in a rom-com. You’ll laugh, you’ll roll your eyes, and you will feel – you cannot ask for much more.

Of course, you are given much more. In addition to all the elements that make this the laugh out loud funny book it is, this one also has a brilliant storyline. It is an amazing friends-to-lovers story, one that will leave you wanting more of the amazing characters. In fact, I think it is safe to label this as one of my favourite friends-to-lovers reads.

Although I loved so many elements of the story, I think the characters were my favourite aspect. They went so well together, and had amazing chemistry. As individuals they were wonderful characters, but together they were fabulous. Each brought plenty of entertainment to the table, and I fell so deeply in love with them both.

Without a doubt, I loved this one. I cannot wait to pick up more Lily Kate in the future.

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

I always love a good friends to lovers romance, and this one was no different. I literally devoured this book in a few short hours.

I LOVED Allie and Jack. They fit together so well, and considering they both think that the other doesn’t feel for them as more than a friend or sibling type relationship, this was really fun to read. I enjoyed the secondary characters, apart from Jacks parents, and this was such a fun and easy read.

For two pretty smart people, they’re both pretty blind at whats right in front of them. They stumble a bit at first, but man, once they get their act together. Wow. There was only a little angst in this, it wasn’t too drawn out, which I appreciated, and I just really loved how this story developed.

The ideas that pop up in the book centered around reading and blogging were really enjoyable as well. I also loved that both Allie and Jack had their own strong personalities and supported each other no matter what. They truly have a wonderful friendship.

I don’t want to ruin the story for anyone, but let me tell you, you won’t regret picking this one up. Highly recommend!

4.5 I want my happy ever after Stars!!!

So there's a few things that are a guarantee when reading Lily Kate books:
1. Super cute premises
2. Hot and sexy times
3. Laugh out loud moments with a health dose of "awwww"

So, if I haven't said this enough in my updates while reading this: THIS IS SUPER CUTE! I mean, super cute. If you are looking for a sweet and sexy friends to lovers, you HAVE to read this!

When I'm committed to an author, I don't bother reading the blurbs. I just dig right in. I love the surprises that I get that way. I'm so glad that I did that because I adored the opening to this book. I was laughing on the first page!

Jack Darcy is unlucky in love. I have no idea why because this guy is the entire package. A successful physician and not to bad on the eyes, he should have women falling at his feet. But the only woman he's interested in is Allie Jenkins, his best friend.

The only constant in my life, the only person who can make me smile no matter the day I've had, is Allie. Fortunately, she's my best friend. Unfortunately, she sees me as her brother, and nothing more.

But Jack has it all wrong. Allie is determined to find Jack Mrs Right, because that's what her best friend deserves. At least that's what she's convinced herself. Allie and Jack have convinced themselves that they are all wrong for each other and go to extra lengths to ensure that the other is completely in the dark of their true feelings. Let the chaos ensue.

One of the things that I love most about Allie is that she is a TRUE romantic. And Jack desperately wants to be the Romeo to her Juliet. The lengths that he goes to in order to finally let her see that is completely ADORKABLE!

I want things to be different between us. I've gone too long in our bubble of friendship, and I can't live there anymore.

This was such a fun read! If you happen to be taking a vacation to break yourself away from the winter blues, definitely take this one along with you!

I REALLY want to know WHY

WHYYYY

romance authors have this NEED of putting a tantrum/conflict/stupid decision or whatever you want to adress it at the end of the book.
Because I swear to God that everything was going so smoothly, the main couple already had a fight, they reconciled and then BANG another fight OUT OF NOWHERE.

JUST TELL ME WHY.

Because that was stupid and unnecessary af.

And for all of that unnecessary shenanigans that a book that I was truly enjoying and thinking it was cute turned out to be really fucking annoying 😑

Jack and Allie are friends. Best friends. And, as we learned in When Harry Met Sally, in order for men and women to be just friends, well, it doesn't happen. One of them is going to be attracted to the other.

That's just how these things work.

Jack has convinced himself he's awkward. That he's an awful date and that he's hopeless when it comes to women. He can't figure out why he has the amazing relationship he has with Allie but can't find it with anyone else. The answer is that none of the other women are the best friend he's in love with.

This was my first title by Lily Kate, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a pleasure to read. The story was balanced. There wasn't too much time spent on the build up to the romance, but there was enough to let the reader know how they felt about one another and the strength of their friendship.

I also liked Allie. I liked how genuinely she wanted Jack to be happy, even though she believes he's not intetested in her.

Jack is charming. Yes, he's a little bit of a geek, but he's nowhere near as awkward as he thinks he is...he just needs the right woman and all is just fine.

I also liked how the author handled the shift from friends to lovers, the inevitable questions, the wondering where the other stands the morning after, the awkward moments, the time spent changing how you see someone who has always been there, but in a different way.

The writing, the characters and the dialogue are all strong. The book flows well and is just as believable when they switch to lovers as it is when they were friends.

I enjoyed this title overall, and I recommend it. I'm looking forward to reading other titles by this author.

My first Lily Kate book and I'm impressed. I had a huge smile on my face the entire read and it never felt silly or over the top. It's not a sexual story at all, but it sure is sexy and heart-warming and truly fun to read. I loved everything about both Jack and Allie and their journey. I'm even smiling NOW while I write this remembering all the LOL moments!

If you're looking for a quick entertaining romantic comedy read, then look no further. This book will hit the spot! #TRUST

Awkward is a standalone romance by author Lily Kate. I have read one of Lily Kate's other books, and I really enjoyed it, so when I saw this best friends romance about an awkward doctor, I knew I had to read it. Awkward is kind of my thing. Plus, I really do enjoy best friends romances. Awkward was a really fun read. Great for fans of funny slow burn romances with lots of mishaps and plenty of heart.

Awkward is the story of Dr. Jack Darcy and his best friend Allie. I loved watching Allie and jack together. Allie is trying to help Jack become less awkward around new women, so he can find his match. But of course both Jack and Allie have feelings for each other and they haven't acted on them because they are oblivious to the other one. If I am honest with myself, this is my least favorite set up for a best friends romance trope, because most of the time it is so obvious. I feel like the characters would have to know how the other felt. So while Awkward did have a fair bit of obliviousness between Jack and Allie, it didn't bug me much because the story line of this novel was so much fun. I devoured this book in one afternoon!

My favorite part about Awkward was how good of friends Jack and Allie actually are. They have a genuine connection. I love that they have chinese food every Sunday and that they know each other so well. Awkward's premise is that Allie is trying to set Jack up with women and help coach him on being less awkward on dates. And there are a few dates that Jack goes on, but a large part of the story is the in between times where Jack and Allie are hanging out, which I really loved. It was pretty much all about them. Lily Kate has a very easy writing style in her books. They feel conversational and fun. She also has a knack for writing humor. I have really enjoyed both of her books. They put me in a great mood and the romance is always really satisfying. I can't wait to read more from Lily.

Awkward is a hilarious friends to lovers romance that will have you giggling throughout. What's better than an alpha hero? An awkward hero!! Lily Kate nailed this hero and I couldn't have been happier!

"Change your shirt, drink a glass of wine, and use that pen. We are going to find you love, Mr. Darcy."

I have been in this situation ish a time or two in my life, you know the whole I think I have a crush on my guy friend, but do I really want to go there and ruin that friendship? Am I good enough for him? Does he feel the same way? Am I really just like a sister to him?

These are basically the same questions that both Jack and Allie continually plagued with. I mean they have been best friends since they were in bitties! Although Allie can't stand the thought of anyone else taking Jack away from her she will do whatever she can to see him happy because she can't stand to see him sad.

Everyone sees that they are are in love with each other... everyone BUT the two of them! It was so cute, except that Jack's mother just kept butting in and attempting to sabotage the two of them finding love!

If you are looking for an awkward, blunt hero that just says the first thing that pops into his head, while trying to hide his feelings for his best friend Awkward is the book for you!

This friends to lovers story was fun and enjoyable. While I got a bit frustrated with the cluelessness of each character re: the feelings the other had for them, I loved the tension it provided. It seemed like they were the last to know they were in love with each other - well, not exactly. They each knew they loved the other, but didn't realize the feelings were returned. It took a bit long to get there, and with some annoying characters in the mix adding to it, but there was much to love in Allie and Jack's characters. I also loved how the epilogue drew a beautiful picture of their happily ever after.

Finally, I give 5 stars to the narration! Nelson Hobbs and Kasha Kensington are both exceptional narrators that brought the story to life.

I love a nerdy romance. This one was cute, and predictable. From the first few pages you knew where this story was headed. Jack and Allie have been friends their whole lives. Jack is a nerdy doctor who needs help with women. Allie is his bff who offers to help him out.

This story has been done.... many times. I sometimes feel old, because I don't understand why people just don't talk! Instead of hiding feelings!

2.5 Stars - I picked up this book because I love a socially awkward character in a romance! From reading the blurb, I thought the leading man was going to be more awkward than he is. This is more about how Allie is going to allow herself to be with Jack, than Jack being awkward around women. The writing was good and I enjoyed the story however felt the situation of Allie questioning herself was drawn out a bit too long. In the end it seemed to drag on and it took me a while to just finish the book.

Awkward is the first book I've read by Lily Kate and I'm so excited that I have discovered a new to me author that I look forward to reading more from. This book is a funny, sweet and addictive friends to lovers romance. I seriously couldn't put it down. I tried. I had some other things to do but I kept finding myself taking breaks from other tasks just so I could read a little bit more.

Jack and Allie have been best friends since they were children. Their families run in the same circle so you would think that they would naturally end up together, right? Nope. These two have friend zoned each other. To an extent. So when Allie offers up her advice to help Jack get over his extreme awkwardness that he has on dates, it should be easy. Yet, it isn't. Both of them start to realize that their feelings for the other might just be more than platonic but neither of them really know what to do with it.

I adored both Jack and Allie. They are actually both awkward in their own way and are perfect for each other. From the first moment we get of them I knew they were perfect for each other and I was rooted for them from the start. It was cute how hard Allie was working to push Jack on a date when it was clear that all he wanted was her. And once he realized that, I started to swoon so hard over him. This one sentence allowed Jack to steal my heart. Once you read the book, you'll understand just how amazing these four words are.

"Allie is my extraordinary."

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking for a sweet, sexy and addictive story, then Awkward is the book for you. You'll laugh. You'll swoon. Ultimately, you'll fall in love with their awkwardness. I had so much fun with this and I can't wait to read more from this author!

Give me a best friends to lovers story with a gruff sexy doctor and his funny, sassy kindergarten teacher best friend. Add in all kinds of missed signals and signs, supportive friends, not always supportive family, and lots of Pride and Prejudice references and you've got a great story that I loved.

Dr. Jack Darcy has the worst luck with relationships and dating. He is very awkward with women in general except when it comes to his best friend Allie Jenkins. She's the only one who has seen him in all his awkward glory and still wants to stick around. But they've known each other practically all their lives and they're just friends. However when Allie decides to help Jack with his romantic life, lines quickly become blurred and soon neither is sure if they want to remain just friends.

Jack was such an interesting character to read about with all his doctor smarts but utter lack of know how on what to do, or not to do when it comes to women. Allie was just fun. She's bookish and loves to eat and loves wine. She's someone I can certainly relate to. I loved the interactions between the two and could easily see what these two apparently couldn't. This book was one that was so easy to get through because I loved every moment of it. I would highly recommend this to my fellow romantic comedy fans.

Jack and Allie have been friends for their entire lives. They have always been totally comfortable just being themselves with one another.

Jack dating is, well, awkward. He never seems to say the right thing at the right time nor has he found the “one” he’s truly looking for. He has an amazing relationship with Allie and has no problem being himself but he can’t just do that with anyone. Or really, won’t do that with anyone. Because he’s in love with his best friend.

Allie wants Jack happy. She wants him to be able to go out on a date with a woman, hell, she’s even tried to set him up. Allie is all for Jack’s happiness and is bound and determined to teach Jack the rules of romance. Yet, she’s not interested in dating anyone. Could it be that she’s in love with her best friend as well?

Awkward is a wonderful story of two friends who have a very strong friendship. The banter between the Jack and Allie, Jack’s POV and when they both finally realize that their feelings are not one sided...magic. The characters, even the secondary, were fantastic. There was enough fun and sexiness with just enough angst to make this book such a wonderful read!

(3.75 stars)

After a horrible date that ended with wine on his shirt, Jake turns to his best friend, Allie, for help. Allie decides she is going to help him get less awkward and proceeds to school him on how to be the perfect date. With interfering parents, double dates gone bad, and some all out funny moments; the two start to realize just maybe Jake's problem isn't his awkwardness but maybe the fact that he is love with his bestie. With everything else going on, will Allie run in the other direction to keep from losing her friend or is the happy ever after right in front of her?

Awkward by Lily Kate was a great friends to lovers read. It was a soft build that left me wanting more. There were just a few hot scenes, but Oh-My!! They were totally worth the wait.

Dr. Darcy is the best friend any girl would be lucky to have. He is the perfect mixture of sexy and sweet. I even loved his awkwardness! Allie was down to earth and lovable. You couldn't help, but want to shout from the sidelines at wanting the best for them both.

The cover fits perfectly and the epilogue was so swoon worthy that I am pretty sure I heard my ovaries cry.

This author is new to me, but won't be for long. I look forward to digging into more of her work.

I would recommend Awkward to others.

AWKWARD. was a little awkward and a lot funny! This friends to lovers romance is the perfect fun and flirty read to bring you out of book funk. Jack is a hot shot surgeon-- you would think he would be able to pull chicks, but the poor guy is awkward as hell. Don't fret! His best friend Allie is ready with a romance lesson plan, but I think we all know how this is going to go...

Allie and Jack show enough heart and chemistry to make the transition from friendship to relationship believable-- which is soooo important in this particular trope! Enjoy!💜

I loved the originality of this book. Best friends to lovers is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. This book made me laugh, and yell. I hated Jack's mother a lot. This book shows you that not every one is searching for the same thing in their lives. Happiness for one person may be settling to another. What is important never miss out on the extraordinary!!!! Thank you for allowing me to read this and write about it.

🖋 SNEAK PEAK REVIEW 🖋
This is my first book by Lily Kate and it so definitely did not disappoint. The story of Jack and Allie was such a sweet and down to earth kind of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 stars read that had me itching for more and a HEA that would never be forgotten. It was more than just awkward, cute, and something building over the years. It was years in the making anticipating its release for explosion but if only they can get pass the friend's stage. For a romantic comedy I am usually one where it can be a hit or miss. I can easily say that this one is on the top of my list of faves.

Received an ARC at no cost to author..What the heck happened? How could I have never read from this author before? I am boggled because let me tell you that I have found another author to stalk. This book was hilarious, and just needed at the right time because I had just finished reading a sad one so this fit the bill. My friends don't even bother finishing reading this review, buy the book it was awesome, and NOOOO, I will not give you details because you seriously need to read! Enjoy!!!
