Modern Marine Weather: From Time-honored Traditional Knowledge to the Latest Technology

Rate this book
A comprehensive text on how to take weather into account for the planning and navigation of voyages, local or global, using the latest technologies as well as the time-honored skills of maritime tradition, so that your time on the water remains as safe and efficient as possible. Covers practical applications of GRIB files, ASCAT wind measurements, and other modern resources. Preface to the third edition A tremendous amount of the modern part of marine weather has changed in the past five years, which, with the addition of color, and all the benefits that brings, makes this a major update to the previous edition. We have greatly expanded the use of GRIB formatted forecasts, including overlays on weather maps and other images. High resolution rapid refresh models now make it possible to forecast local winds in digital format, which has a potentially revolutionary impact on day sailing in local waters—it’s not just for ocean passages any longer. An overview of optimum weather routing has been added, along with expanded discussion of ASCAT scatterometer winds, which are now available in GRIB format. We have emphasized obtaining weather data by email, including crucial details of the process. Now, with accurate barometers in our cellphones, the benefit of careful pressure analysis is more readily available, and has been stressed. The crucial practice of forecast management (map sequencing) has been improved, and new means of squall forecasting using the new simulated radar reflectivity forecasts have been added. The entire book has been gone over to optimize descriptions, with major updates in several sections. We did not shy away from including important internet links, well aware that they are subject to change. Updates as needed are posted on the book's support page.

Modern Marine Weather is a very comprehensive treatise of marine meteorology for sailors. IT is written by a sailor, which allows the author to focus on the most relevant topics.
Most sailing books have a weather section, this book takes a different (and better) approach covering both the theoretical aspect and the practical aspect of all topics.

As an example, by reading this book, you are not only able to understand what the effect of a low pressure system are on wind but also what the mechanism is that generates the low pressure system, the way it evolves and moves in relation with the cells of global circulations, how and why fronts form and so on.

Very useful for every mariner no matter if the plan is a day sail in a protected area or a long passage in the southern hemisphere.

In nearly thirty years of sailing I've read a great deal about weather, most of which related to the RYA syllabus. If you have read the same you will probalby notice some irritating holes in the narrative.
Want to fill in the holes - this is the book for you.
As my friend and crew commented, "These people clearly know a lot about the weather", well they do and they have taken the time and trouble to explain just about everything they know in great detail, and reasonably up to date in a fast changing field. It has changed the way I look at the charts and forecasts and had a major impact on our weather planning. I have not yet even started exploring the web resources.
However, a lightweight summary this is not, so if you struggle with reading and find technical texts difficult, get an adult you to help or stick with the colouring-in.
I cant recommend it enough!

Fantastic book! Insightful and super clear way (using plenty of visual explanations) to understand key forces and symptoms related to changing weather. It contains a lot of examples and resources, which truly help understand what is going on with the weather and how to predict its changes. Obviously, what helps is that the book is written by a sailor. It is a must read for any skipper!
