Katy Ridnouer was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina and lived there for eighteen brief months. She returned to her birth state after ten moves with her military family and marriage to her high school sweetheart. In 2007, she and her family moved to Ireland. Although her husband's ancestors were from Ireland, it was she who fell under the spell of the Irish life.
Katy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Education degree at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She is the author of two books for teachers: Managing Your Classroom with Heart and Everyday Engagement. Katy wrote Hillwalking for all of us finding our way; it is her first novel. A teacher since 1993, Katy is the founder of a charter school, served as its Head of School for two years, and now serves as an Education Consultant, offering coaching, consulting, and training to school leaders and their team of teachers throughout North Carolina. She lives in Charlotte and enjoys creating a life there with her husband and three boys.
The title warned me that I wasn't going to gain much but didn't have much of a choice. In short, I thought it was a waste of my time. My main question is to ask this author about her classroom experience and if she has ever been a lead teacher in a public school classroom? Yes, the author may have renewed her license for 20+ years but we all know that it can easily be renewed every year by taking one day workshops & never even stepping into a classroom. My point is that after reading a handful of her classroom stories, I questioned if she made them up rather than trying to learn from them.
I bought this book used months ago & recently began reading it in hopes that it would provide some new ideas & strategies in a classroom. The author's title is catchy but most of her suggestions were basically all common sense or from our basic 101 EDU courses. Overall, I really felt as if this book was written more by an idealistic college student who hasn't yet experienced leading a classroom. Overall, teaching with love was one of the reasons why I wanted to be a teacher. However, to be an effective teacher, I need more than this author's common sense advice based on her few anecdotal examples that may work on our best days in a classroom. The reality for a teacher today is the ongoing pressure to stick with the curriculum while being accountability for our students' progress. Although this book didn't meet my expectations, it was an easy read with a only few run-on sentences & grammatical errors.
This book was required reading. I have not written a review until now but wanted to with this book. This book didn’t deliver any new information like the other required books for this topic. Positive note- test questions based on this book will be easy.
For a class. Better suited to a novice teacher, specifically in the areas of ELA or social studies... contains a few good reminders, but if you're reading this after 20 years in the classroom, you'll have already known all this or you would've quit in frustration by year 3. Pick up Teaching with Love and Logic instead.
This book was a required read for one of my classes. Like previous reviews of this book, I too was disappointed and surprised that that this author failed to provide any new information beyond the basics. On a positive note, this book was a fast read.
My new principal, gave this to the staff as a summer read, so I was motivated to see what he liked about it and thought it had to teach us. I would have quit after reading the opening if it hadn’t been gifted as such. The author came off as way too soft hearted to be someone I’d take advice from. However, I stuck with it and found her to reverse course. The style she describes in the rest of the book is caring but firm and consistent, and I’d like to have her as a coworker. I agree with a previous reviewer that the conversations and amazingly mature responses from the students she deals with sound made up—that’s not how students in my experience would have spoken. I wouldn’t talk this book up to others, but it was okay.
It wasn't so much the writing that was poorly done as the fact that nothing I read was all that earth-shattering for me. I had a lot of "duh" moments and sort of felt that many of her "conversations" with students were idealized. I doubt that all of her one-on-one sessions went as smoothly as the author presented them. That being said, the book could be useful so someone without experience managing a classroom/household or someone who struggles with classroom management.
I got this book on a whim and thought it would be too touchy-feely for me. It wasn't at all. It was great! It fits my personality perfectly (love the kids but remaining professional and the adult in the situation) and I can't wait to use some of the things I learned next year!
