Kay's first real case as a licensed investigator is to track down a suspected mistress and the possible hidden assets of an estranged husband. It all seems pretty routine, but when the financial trail leads Kay down a rabbit hole of laundered money and bank fraud, a boring divorce case gets interesting.
Just as Kay closes in on what seems to be the white collar crime of the century, the husband drops dead in his morning coffee—coffee that has more than just cream and sugar added to the cup!
The the man's widow is the main suspect, but Kay wonders if the murder is less a crime of passion and more one of greed—or even revenge.
Awesome as always. Now that she has her PI license she has her first case. A divorce case where the wife thinks that her husband has hidden assets and is possibly cheating on her. With all the clients paperwork available, she knows that there is a clue there but doesn't have the knowledge to find it. Enlisting a friends help she finally finds a clue. Property and the elderly! Her fact findings lead her to assume that property is being flipped. Then when the husband turns up dead, the investigation takes on a more serious note. Can she find out - who, why and when! Even if it's not enough for the police to act on. Plus her friend, Daisy, is now engaged in being romance department by J.T and she herself finds that she is not adverse to possibly having one too. A great read (even though I have read something very similar).
Root Of All Evil: A Locust Point Mystery (Book 6) — Libby Howard/Narrator: Margaret Strom (21 chapters) Feb. 26-27, 2022
Kay is handed a real case which involves a woman who is certain her husband is having an affair or even making money on the side and not telling her about it. As she investigates, a murder takes place that appears to implicate a person that Kay can’t quite completely believe. The killing happens late in the story and it never is completely resolved.
As a side story, Kay becomes closer to Judge Beck and reveals some feelings for him, which the good judge reciprocates to some extent.
Daisy and Gator’s friendship warms up and adds another layer to the character growth.
Another killing, but this one happens late in the book and there is no real solution to the mystery.
Overall a very good book that continues to charm this reader.
I’d have given it 5 stars but Will Lars was called Lars a few times early in the book making it sound like Lars was his first name - I know it’s probably petty but I get invested in recurring characters and that set me off to start and them Madison is a star softball player and her brother Henry is track and field - established in the first story but in this one, she’s competing in track meets. I’m as bad as the characters in the story about Luanne.😆. The premise is really good though and other than those 2 issues (my idiosyncrasies), it’s a really good story.
Loved the plot. No blood and gore just very interesting research gathering to solve the mystery. The main character is a believable and interesting person. Someone I would love to meet and chat with. The rest of the characters are quirky and delightful. I love the ongoing theme of this series and can't wait for the next book.
I did not enjoy this book as much as I did the previous books in this series. The main characters were just as enjoyable as always. But the storyline was not very interesting and felt unfinished in some ways. Still think Libby Howard is a very talented author and look forward to reading her next book in this series.
This story has a lot of enlightening information good to know. While emphasizing her background as an investigative journalist, it did seem that her questioning of some suspects was done in a rather bullheaded fashion. It's surprising that they not only answered her but didn't take offense. Just my take on it .
Really liked how this story ended. Not often that a mystery has a twisted ending. Kay is the more modern murder she wrote detective that trips into murder mysteries with her job. Cast of characters around her are interesting and amusing. This time fraud of the elderly was at the heart of the story.
Kay now has her PI license and while doing financial discovery for a divorce case gets involved in the upcoming eviction of a terminally ill elderly man. I didn't find the ending as satisfactory as other titles in this series but I realize why she concluded it as she did.
Definitely enjoyed reading this book in the series. I love the characters and storylines. The concept of this series is so enjoyable I look forward to the next book.
I liked that the 'killer' wasn't 'really' caught. The storyline touched on a real issue which is a nice change of pace. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Hoopla Digital Audiobooks Publisher: Findaway Voices Another wonder story and narrated with feelings of all the characters about Kay helping a man that is terminally ill and is almost being evicted from his home. Kay discovers a corrupt white collar crime but before going to court, the man is murdered. This has me scratching my head wondering if I would have done what Kay did.
3 Stars, book ended Abruptly with no conclusion. Also a suggestion the Authors character bakes goodies in her books could live a few pages at the end of book with mentioned recipes.
Cute, quick read - without giving anything away, it's nice to see how things are progressing in the potential romance department. Satisfying ending - glad the bad guy got his just desserts!
So, basically a regular mystery with no supernatural elements. It’s Kay’s first case as a PI and she solves several mysteries with the help of her friends.
Interesting, entertaining, insightful and an excellent mystery. My favorite audiobook thus far in one of my favorite series. Well written and well narrated!
