The purpose of this book is to encourage followers of Jesus to take His love and power outside the walls of the church building into the streets and marketplace. I know I don’t have the corner on the market of outreach. The ideas and principles in this book can translate into different forms of ministry “outside the walls.” The idea of a “Need Prayer?” Booth is only one of a multitude of creative ways God is giving to His people to do outreach. The point is to find the one that works for you in your context and go for it! This is what it means for the “the church to leave the building.” I want to say right from the outset that I have an to transfer an ethos of loving people the way Jesus loves them into doing outreach. Our goal should be that people experience the love of God when we encounter them on the street. That happens when we treat them with care and respect. If we really love people, and they in turn experience the love of God in that relational exchange, then we have won! Not everyone we pray for is healed, and not all with a request get their prayer answered in the way they were hoping. But it is my conviction that every time we pray with people, something good does happen, and that good begins with the love of God exhibited. That is the whole key! This book in organized into three Part 1: TRAINING. This is a “how to” of sorts recounting what I have learned, much of it in the “school of hard knocks.” Part 2: TESTIMONIES. These are a few of the stories of what God did in the Prayer Booth ministry. The purpose of sharing these “highlights” is to inspire you, the reader, to actually go out and do something like this. It is also to give God glory in recalling what He has done, and to build up a trust and confidence in you that He desires to do even more through you. Part 3: TOOLS. This section will give you the “nuts and bolts” details and some “do’s and don’ts.” It is a summary of some of what is discussed in Part 1, with some practical advice on how to get going in this specific ministry.
I finished this book in one sitting! A great ‘how to’ book on street ministry. It is also filled with guidance on what not to do. Some truly life-changing stories of healing and redemption. If God is leading you towards a street ministry...you need to read this book.
