This is the ninth edition of Buzz Books: Young Adult and it contains a great collection of excerpts of upcoming YA titles which will be published in the Fall/Winter of 2018.

The publication starts with an introduction followed by a section listing fiction and nonfiction titles. It also includes a page informing the Buzz Books authors appearing at BookExpo.

Last, there are sixteen excerpts by publishers. I recommend you read the introduction and based on the description of the books read the excerpt you are interested in... or just read them all!

I particularly enjoyed the excerpt for Sadie by Courtney Summers. Overall, a great list of buzzing YA titles for the Fall/Winter of 2018.

This collection of excerpts from upcoming adult books was very much a mixed bag for me. Some of them I was devastated that I didn't have the complete book, whereas others I was counting down the minutes until I could move on to the next book.

There was a wide variety of reading material, quite a few contemporaries and a fair bit of fantasy. There might have been a couple of others from different genres, but those two comprised the bulk of the content. (Actually, now that I'm thinking there was some science fiction too.) I think that there is definitely something for every reader in here!

My personal favourites were: When Elephants Fly (contemporary), The Similars (science fiction), Ignite The Stars (outer space fiction), & That's not what happened (contemporary). These were my personal favourites, but there was a wide range and definitely something for everyone.

(Also, yes. I did just make outer space fiction it's own genre, and I will stand by that.)

I enjoyed the fantasy reads too, but no one of them in particular really stood out to me, whereas these were the four which really made me want to continue reading the rest of the novel.

This was definitely helpful in helping me determine which of the upcoming releases I will look at reading and/or buying in the future, but I would not really recommend reading it just for enjoyment. It is a bit jarring reading just one to three chapters of a character and then having to move on to a new set. It was definitely helpful, but also hard to follow as an enjoyment read.

Overall, I'm rating it three stars because of the wide range in stories, and my wide range of opinions for each. Many of these stories had intriguing and enjoyable beginnings, and I look forward to seeing the releases of these novels.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a copy. All opinions are my own.

I'm sure this is a great guide but I ended up just skimming through it as I'm not a YA reader. I was looking for books for my emerging YA daughter and I feel like if it had interested me more, it's a fantastic guide for those looking to see what the new buzz books will be coming up Fall 2018. I would definitely recommend taking a look through here if you enjoy the YA reading. I am looking forward to looking through the other guide Buzz Books 2018: Fall/Winter.

Thanks to Netgalley and Publishers Lunch for a copy of the ebook in exchange for a fair and honest review/

So I've had this book on my shelf on Netgalley for an embarrassingly long time. So long that the majority, if not all, of the books featured have been published. Oh, and I've actually already read two of them.

Buzz Books 2018: Young Adult Fall/Winter is a little sneak peek into some of the new YA books that were coming out in the Fall/Winter of 2018 (clue's in the title). We have excerpts from 16 books ranging from contemporary to fantasy to Sci-fi, and the excerpts are around a chapter or two long. I enjoy these books because they give you a feel of the book before you pick it up, and it can help you decide whether you want to continue with that story or not.

As I've said, I've already read two of the books featured which were Sadie by Courtney Summers and Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. Also, I already had two other books on my TBR, The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokski and Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd, and the excerpts have definitely made me more excited to read those.

To my surprise, out of the remaining 12 books, there were only 3 books that I'm interested in picking up. But those 3 books made such an impact on me that I'm dying for them. I'll go into a little more detail about them below:

The House of One Thousand Eyes by Michelle Barker
Dystopian meets Historical Fiction in this book set in Germany during 1980s, while the Berlin Wall was up. I don't think I've come across any other books that take place during this time and I think it's such a perfect concept for a book. Really looking forward to this one!

When Elephants Fly by Nancy Richardson Fischer
When I read the synopsis, I was like hmm.. okay, don't have high hopes for this one. But the writing and the story drew me in. YA is obviously a perfect genre for mental health representation, but I don't think I've read a lot about schizophrenia. This is definitely an unique take on the mental health rep where we have a girl trying to avoid schizophrenia from developing by living a stress-free life, and I can't wait to start this one!

The Similars by Rebecca Hoover
Sci-fi/Fantasy/Dystopian/Slightly mysterious - I love the concept, love the writing, love the story so far, really need this book in my life. Not much else to say!

Overall, it was a mixed bag, but it's made me really excited for 5 books this year so you know. Really glad I eventually picked this up!

Buzz Books 2018: Young Adult Fall/Winter is a collection of chapter previews for soon-to-be-published books. Published by Publishers Lunch, this is the second volume of Buzz Books that I’ve read. Like the previous volume, this one offers a glimpse into an eclectic line up of stories intended for teen readers that span across the genres. There are best-selling, well known authors as well as unknown authors - with genres ranging from science fiction & fantasy to realistic fiction about school and relationships - there is something for every young reader in this collection.

My favorites included The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi, Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa, A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna, Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan, Bluecrowne by Kate Milford, Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan, and Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd. Each of these titles sparked my interest with strong female characters, exciting science fiction or intriguing fantasy, and a bit of the unexpected. Many of them are also diverse and written by women, which are two qualities I actively seek out when choosing books to read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Publisher’s Lunch for making this collection available in exchange for an honest review. It looks like 2018-2019 will be an exciting season for young adult books, and I look forward to reading many of the novels included in this Buzz Books collection in the future. Though all from my favorites list are going on my “to-read” list - the book I’m most intrigued by is A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna, which is a science fiction retelling of the Mahabrahata set in space that promises both creativity and adventure.

I look forward to Buzz Books issues to give me an idea of books to anticipate in the coming season and to determine what I might want to read. This Young Adult issue hightlights a variety of talent and genres for Fall/Winter 2018. At first there is a listing of all Fiction and Non-Fiction YA books for the season - naturally the non-fiction is a small list compared to a huge listing of novels.

There were sixteeen excerpts the publishers have showcased and I read all of them greedily. and found four that I really would like to read - especially The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi and Sadie by Courtney Summers. From the listing in the front I found another four or five authors I try to follow with books coming out. Looks like a great season for YA books!

Many thanks to Publishers Lunch BUZZ BOOKS through Netgalley for this great preview!

Wow, this is amazing. I wish something like this was on the receptionist's table as you walk into any library. It's a fantastic way to get to know books that you might be interested in - books that are getting more and more popular, even before they come out sometimes.

It also offers a great deal or publishing information and author bios. LOVE IT! Saves a ton of Google research for those considering a closer look at the publishing world.

I haven't even finished it yet - it's not a sort of book you just flip through and be done. It's more of a directory of your near future's literary life - but I've already bought a few of the books represented here.

Thank you NetGalley so much for this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I was gifted an ebook via Netgalley.

Mammoth by Jill Baguchinsky [5 stars]: A story about a fashion blogger with a summer paleontology internship, sign me up! Loved this excerpt. The MC is sassy and loves mammoths more than dinosaurs :) Added to my TBR

The House of One Thousand Eyes by Michelle Barker [3 stars]: I was interested after reading the synopsis, but what I read so far didn't really sway me either way. Not sure if I will read this or not. It follows a girl named Lena living in East Germany in the 1980s.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi [3 stars]: I don't know how to feel about this excerpt or how it read. Parts of it were interesting (and reminded me of how Flame in the Mist started), but not all of it captured my attention. It took me a bit to get through it.

White as Silence, Red as Song by Alessandro D'Avenia [1 star]: I didn't finish this one. I think a little got lost in translation and it didn't make for a cohesive read.

When Elephants Fly by Nancy Richardson Fischer [4 stars]: I am looking forward to this one and seeing how the mental health representation is done.

The Girl in the Locked Room by Mary Downing Hahn [skipped]: It's a horror book. I need to sleep LOL

The Similars by Rebecca Hoover [3 stars]: This has potential but it seemed extremely juvenile and trope-y right out of the gate.

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa [5 stars]: OMG. I have an ARC of this and it's going on my TBR soon. The little bit was sooooo incredible.

That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger [5 stars]: Just enough to get me hooked and now I have to wait until August at the very least. This one wasn't even on my radar. Added to my TBR

A Spark of White by Sangu Mandanna [5 stars]: A space opera with roots in Indian stories that grabbed me from the very start and cliffhangered me hard at the end of the excerpt. Added to my TBR

Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan [5 stars]: Another phenomenal scifi book to look forward to. This one is a debut novel and is very different than the space opera I just read an excerpt from. Added to my TBR

Bluecrowne by Kate Milford [skipped]: This is a sequel to a book I have not read.

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan [5 stars]: The part demon/part human thing pulled me in immediay. This book was already on my TBR and I am even more excited for it now!

Pay Attention, Carter Jones by Gary D. Schmidt [4 stars]: Interesting middle grade excerpt. Really intrigued to find out what happens! Loved Carter's perspective. I think my kids would enjoy this one too.

Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd [2 stars]: Wasn't big on this excerpt at all. Really flowery writing. Removed from TBR

Sadie by Courtney Summers [3 stars]: This was okay. A girl dies in a fire and her sister goes missing a year after her death.

As usual, great sneak peek of this fall's best YA fiction! I have already requested The Gilded Wolves and Sadie. I'll definitely read That's not whet happened, and also loved the excerpts of Grim Lovelies, The House of One Thousand Eyes, and Shadow of the Fox. Great that some middle school books are also included in this selection.

The Spring/Summer 2018 edition of YA BUZZ BOOKS disappointed me with almost all fantasy/supernatural/sci fi novels. Fall/Winter fortunately included more realistic fiction to add to my TBR list. I will preorder WHEN ELEPHANTS FLY, THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENED, and SADIE after I finish this review!

this preview had a few titles on my tbr excited pile!!! I didn't read everything :guilty: because I can be an extremely picky reader based on the mood that hits me (for god's sake, I put down cat's captive prince five chapters in when it was still available as original online fiction!!! I picked it up a year and a half year later and despaired that I'd been such an idiot.)

so, here's a selection of reviews that vary in length:

mammoth by jill baguchinsky
oh my god what a ride. I love the main character already- smart and classily, if a little work inappropriate, dressed.

the house of one thousand eyes by michelle barker
I did a course on european history and we spent a week on the gdr- including watching a german film about a member of the stasi spying on a couple. im a sucker for historical fiction and i love the vibes of this book. lena is a sympathetic main character and her uncle is erratic and mysterious.

the gilded wolves by roshni chokshi
this excerpt is taunting me with its desirability!!!! to my coy mistress (netgalley) please grant me the pleasure of this arc in my library!!! it contains a few of my favourite things, including alternate histories, magic, vengeance and heists!! short to the point of taunting but oh, so sweet.

shadow of the wolf by julie kagawa
o julie kagawaaaa- i havent had a good experience with you in the past, but i am quite willing to give you a chance. she is quite good at worldbuilding and the preview here really allows it to sink into your bones and provide ~atmosphere~. also the end is fucking creepy. kudos to jules for the the ol game of thrones method: exposition by execution of character narrating the first chapter. at least it was announced in the first paragraph, which gave me time to brace myself. I love court mystery and intrigue, but i get the feeling from the summary that this aint it. still, i absolutely love japanese history and mythology so i want to give this a crack (i was also approved for an arc get hype!!)

girls of paper and fire by natasha ngan
omfgggg im so hype for this book i added it to my tbr: excited about a week ago and i still cant believe i was approved for an arc!! divertsity ftw!!! this preview only shows a little of lei's story before the real struggle begins, but it was the summary that truly drew me in. and all the reviews ive read about this book beforehand.

the worldbuilding isnt in your face and we can immediately tell that we're not in your stock standard western fantasy world. i originally read 'forbidden fantasy' and rolled my eyes because, god, what a cliche. and then some reviews shed a light on this so called forbidden romance ans i did a complete 180 because SIS!!!! THIS IS IT!!!! 20gayteen is HERE!!!! sapphic east asian fantasy is IN!!

i have heard great things about this book and the author so i am prepared to be impressed. the cover is absolutely gorgeous as well- be still my beating heart!

im going zoom over and devour the entire thing once i finish work today (im actually writing this in a lull between patients right now lol)

What an exciting line up for Young Adult books in Fall of 2018. It is amazing to see just the list of all the books that will be published not only to see the scope of how many books but also to see the breadth of subgenres within the YA umbrella. I didn't realize that this is something anyone can download for free from major booksellers. Now that I know I can recommend it to a lot of people. I get so excited to see what is upcoming, it is like a kid in a candy store. I put so many on my goodreads TBR list and that way I can keep track and not miss a thing. Reading the previews allows me a chance to really see what I am going to spend my money on. So much better than reading the blurb on the book jacket, this allows a real glimpse into story and a feel for the writing.

Some I was already excited for like "Sadie" by Courtney Summers which is a thriller but so much more. This has so much buzz I just can't wait. "The House of One Thousand Eyes" by Michelle Barker is set in East German before the Berlin Wall came down. Most YA's won't know about this time in history and should prove to be a eye opener. Julie Kagawa is starting another series. Most will know her from the Talon series. "Girls of Paper and Fire" by Natasha Ngan has been getting a lot of buzz for being an Asian fantasy novel and has a gorgeous cover. After reading the previews I will keep my eye out for "Mammoth" by Jill Baguchinsky, a plus size fashion blogger who is also interning as a palaeontologist in Texas with some romance in the mix. Roshani Chokshi from the Star Touched Queen series is starting a new series "The Gilded Wolves which everyone is anxiously awaiting. "The Similars" by Rebecca Hanover has six clones attending a fancy boarding school, made against the law, where the main character has to deal with the fact that one is made from the DNA of her best friend who died. "A Spark of White Fire" by Sangu Mandanna promises to build an exciting world where there are complicated family dynamics and kingdoms to be won told in the Indian tradition. Because I am a Sci Fi fan "Ignite The Stars" by Maura Milan promises to be another exciting action packed book where The Commonwealth tries to control the heroince of the story for their own evil purposes. They compare it to "The Lunar Chronicles" which I enjoyed very much.

In the beginning there is a long list of what is coming out where you will find other books by favorite authors, sequels to series you might already be reading and although the section is small a list of nonfiction books. It is well worth taking the time to see what is coming up in Young Adult for the Fall/Winter season.

(I received a digital arc from netgalley in exchange for an honest review)

I was really excited to read these excerpts for the upcoming ya releases of fall/winter.
It was a nice mix of genres and had some hits and misses, there are definitely some books that I want to read the full book of.

+ Mammoth: sounds like a really cute and light contemporary read.

+ the house of one thousand eyes: interesting historical fiction about a time I have not read much about yet, but about which i've learned a lot in school, so I'm interested to read the full book!

+ the gilded wolves: I already was excited about this book before reading the excerpt, but this amplified my excitement for it.

- white as silence, red as song: Just did not capture my interest.

+/- when elephants fly: I liked it, but I'm not sold yet, I'm interested in the mental health rep though.

- the girl in the locked room: horror is just not my genre..

+/- the similars: was okay, but I it didn't capture my full interest. However, if I see it at a library or something I might pick it up.

+ shadow of the fox: oh my god just give this book to me right now please, LOVED it!

+ that is not what happened: interesting contemporary story with a mystery aspect, I'm intrigued to see how the story continues!

+ a spark of white fire: normally science fiction is not my genre, but this one managed to capture my interest.

- ignite the stars: again, science fiction is not really my genre and this one just didn't do it for me.

+/- bluecrowne: I really like fantasy but this one felt a little bit juvinile to me and didn't capture my interest.

+ girls of paper and fire: Really enjoyed this fantasy, I'll keep my eye out for it as I would really like to read the full book!

- pay attention, Carter Jones: Nope, just didn't do it for me. However, I think younger readers may enjoy this one.

+ Grim lovelies: Really enjoyed this story, I really want to read this when it comes out!

+ Sadie: intruiging contemporary/mystery story, I'm definitely interested to see how it continues!

rating system:
+ means that I liked it and that I would like to read the full book
+/- means that I liked it, but I'm not sure if I'll pick it up
- means that I just didn't like it for one reason or another, I probably won't read the full book.

Summer 2018, NetGalley ARC:

Thank you to Jill Baguchinsky, Michelle Baker, Nancy Richardson Fischer, Mary Hahn, Angu Madanna, Kate Milford, Megan Shepherd, Rebecca Hanover, Julie Kajawa, Kody Kepliner, Natasha Ngan, Courtney Summers, Roshani Chokshi, Gary. Schmidt, Alessandro D’Avenia, Mahabrahata, Maura Milan, Publishers Lunch, Publishers Lunch BUZZ BOOKS, and NetGalley for this advanced copy of “Buzz Books 2018: Young Adult Fall/Winter” for an honest review.

I always, always, always jump at the chance to get my hands on the Buzz Book releases. I love getting the chance to look through the release list for all my favorite up and coming author releases to keep an eye out for on NetGalley.

(My current fall/winter watch from the lists

Fiction: Roshani Chokshi, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Lauren DeStefano, Sophie Jordan, David Levithan, Marie Lu, Sarah J. Mass, Tahereh Mafi, Marissa Meyer, Jodi Meadows, Lauren Oliver, James Patterson, Laini Taylor, Markus Zuzak.

Non Fiction: Heather Demetrios, Barry Denenberg, Amy Klobuchar, Anita Sakeesian)

My favorite read from this set was Roshani Chokshi’s newest book, and I was delighted to get to have an early read at it, even though I’ve already requested to read the galley of it.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. Even though this is the ninth edition of Buzz Books: Young Adult, it is the first I had read. It includes excerpts from upcoming and recently published young adult books. After finishing some of the stories, I immediately ordered their corresponding books because I HAD to finish reading them and was annoyed I didn't have it available to finish it immediately. Others, well, I liked reading them but would not continue reading the rest of the book. This edition provided an eclectic line up of stories and a nice mixture YA sub-genres. Because of people's natural tendency to gravitate to what you are comfortable or familiar with I tend to read the same sub-genres of YA more than others. If I have a choice, I prefer to read more fantasy YA then novels that about real life. I enjoyed reading excepts from books that I would not have normally chosen.

I like the idea of possibly knowing about the next huge book or series before it's published. Also, knowing about them makes a great conversation starter with my children. I would definitely read other Buzz Book collections to help make informed suggestions of selecting books for myself and my children.

Buzz Books are my new favorite thing. I obtained a copy from Netgalley's read now section.

I love being able to sample a bunch of excerpts from upcoming YA novels in one collection instead of having to search out each story seperately.

My favorites were The Similars, Ignite the Stars, A Spark of White Fire, and Girls of Paper and Fire. I can't wait to read the whole stories. I have already been approved for The Similars and am currently reading so a review for that one will come soon but all four have been on my tbr for awhile. 📚📚📚

3.5 stars.

What an array of stories! The diversity of this collection is astounding, as is the originality of every single tale. Each one of these stories felt like a breath of fresh air. They’re all extremely unique, and some are guaranteed to take YA by storm. Readers are in for a treat. My favourite excerpts are definitely Sadie, Girls of Paper and Fire, and Ignite the Stars (I’ve already read the full book and absolutely loved it).

But the excerpts vary a lot in terms of writing quality, as well. I feel like Gilded Wolves, Ignite The Stars, Sadie, and Girls of Paper and Fire are on a whole different level compared to ones like The House of One Thousand Eyes and Mammoth. They’re just better written. And that’s my only negative: while I found some of the stories downright badly written, others I can see myself rating a full 5 stars. It’s all subjective, of course, but personally I found the contrast quite glaring. The quality varies a lot.

What a fantastic grouping of books to read excerpts of for upcoming Young Adult titles. I was completely beguiled by the fantasy of Roshani Chokshi's The Gilded Wolves, saddened by Lily's predicament in When Elephants Fly by Nancy Richardson Fischer, curious about the clone story in Rebecca Hanover's The Similars, excited for the adventure in Julie Kagawa's Shadow Fox, and so depressed by the relevancy in That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger. I can't wait for Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan, and I loved the storytelling layout in Sadie by Courtney Summers.

I am so looking forward to the above listed titles and reading their excerpts made me even more so that I wish I could read them now. Each of these titles cover vast topics and span many genres, but they read so well and pulled me in in such a short excerpt that I'm anxious for more---I just wish I didn't have to wait so long to read them all!

**Please note I did not feature or list every book listed in this Buzz list. I am only mentioning those that interest me after reading every excerpt**

Yet another great edition of Buzz Books YA. I always love reading these because there's often a few books that I may not have come across otherwise!

There was a lot more contemporary included in this edition than the last that I read - which isn't so much up my alley (heavy fantasy reader over here!) however some of them sounded too good not to be on my TBR. There's also a couple of excerpts from books that I am already excited about (The Gilded Wolves anyone!!!???!!??) and now I'm not sure how to wait for these releases!

This is the first time that I've read through a Buzz Books catalog and it will certainly not be my last. This was a great read that gave sneak peeks to upcoming YA releases this Fall/Winter season. Reading through these excerpts got me excited for some new books, the ones that I am particularly looking forward to are Shadow of the Fox, When Elephants Fly, and That's Not What Happened.

The YA edition of the Buzz Books Fall/Winter 2018 compilation includes a few noteworthy titles to look forward to.

**3.75 stars**
This edition was way better than the other one earlier this year with more samples and more debut novels or first series installments. There were also a few surprise samples in here that I'm dying to get my hands on the full book. Review is here on my blog for each individual sample:

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Another new season, another new Buzz Books anthology of upcoming titles. While it's always interesting to see snippets of upcoming books, unfortunately, nothing really caught my eye. However, it's important to remember that these are excerpts; hopefully the real things are better and more interesting.

I really enjoyed reading these snipets of upcoming releases. Getting a sample helps me plan what books I want to get my hands on when they release.
I am looking forward to reading :Sadie, Girl of Paper and Fire, and several other stories included in this sampler.
