Kylie Berry Mysteries #4

A Berry Cunning Conman

Rate this book
Welcome to Sarah’s Eatery, where the food is to-die-for!
Armed with zero cooking skills but infinite tenacity, Kylie Berry fights tirelessly to learn the ins and outs of operating a restaurant—but when her cook Brenda takes a leave of absence, she’s left to manage the café kitchen alone.

"Winters will have you giggling into your book!"
Kylie pulls 12-hour shifts at Sarah’s Eatery and struggles to find time to eat, sleep, and most importantly, keep at her culinary studies. Café regulars and potential suitors Joel and Brad lend a hand, but when Joel finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation, it’s his turn to ask amateur mystery hound Kylie for help.

All the police can find of tipster Morgan Bleur is his hand—clutching a torn piece of Joel’s shirt! As Joel, Kylie, and her fiercely protective best friend Zoey Jin investigate the life and death of Morgan, they find a trail of romanced retirees and a man who lived to collect secrets for his own benefit.

Who stood to benefit from Morgan’s death? One of the many lonely blue-haired ladies he wrung for their clandestine gossip—and possibly for their pensions as well? Or one of the many whose lives were ruined by the tips he sold to the press for big bucks?

While Kylie hunts to clear Joel’s good name and shine a light on the truth, she’s still got a kitchen to run! Will she make it through the ordeal alive, or will exhaustion—or something more sinister—shut her eyes for good?

This is the fourth book of the 'Kylie Berry Mysteries'. Cousin Sarah had presented the penniless Kylie with an agreement to purchase the restaurant, Sarah's Eatery, along with ownership of the entire block. In this installment, Kylie Berry is learning to cook some basic meals, but a large portion of her food is still not edible enough to be sold a full price. So, she created an 'Ooops board' for meals that were not worthy of the full price, at a discount. Through the combined efforts of Kylie and her employees, there are fewer items available on the 'Ooops Board'

This storyline is able to captivate the reader with the plot and character interaction. However, it is questionable how a restaurant with inedible food continues to survive with repeat customers. Another aggravation is the grammatical errors creeping in. There were more grammar issues in this installment than remember noticing in the previous ones. they are a bit distracting momentarily. However, the quirky characters, the twist, and turns in the plot, the interactions between the members of the community, and the camaraderie within the restaurant enticed me to get better acquainted this zany cast more fully.

With all her duties at the restaurant, it makes you wonder where Kylie finds the time to join Zoey in questioning people for means, motives, and/or opportunities in regard to the recent murder. True to cozy mystery formula, the heroine and her trusty side-kick, Zoey, are investigating the case. Together, Kylie and Zoey, bumble through their personal style of detecting hoping to find the real killer. Will they succeed?

All in all, this is a CLEAN mystery, that is able to stand on its own, and concludes satisfactorily. However, it will make more sense if the series is read in order.

This book by A.R. Winters is a fun, light and most enjoyable reading cozy murder mystery with our main trio of characters working hard to solve the crime before the cops can pin it on one of them. I really enjoyed the light banter between the characters as they make and carry out their detective portion of the story. There is also a tiny little romantic interest subplot which is dangled in front of the reader for pure speculation and entertainment. I must admit that this is one mystery I was not able to solve before the end of the book. I look forward to reading others in the Kylie Berry series. This is a rather late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.

This was a quick and easy read. I had never read any of the other books in this series but have read other books by this author though. Luckily you didn't need to read the others to keep up with this one. I really loved the friendship that Kylie had with Zoey. They are exactly what you would want for each other. I liked the mystery and as always it kept me guessing until the end. Since I enjoyed this I will now have to go back and read the rest of the series.

A wonderful combination of a serious crime mystery with the quirky and sometimes hilarious characters from a cozy mystery. This is the fourth book in the series but the first one I have read. I had no problems following the story or understanding the relationships. The book is well-written and edited, the plot well thought out and cohesive. I enjoyed it very much, even staying up late into the night to finish it. I will be reading more from this series. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy from Hidden Gems.

Kylie Berry has taken over her cousin Sarah’s Eatery, after her divorce from her husband, who ripped her life apart after having carried on with affairs throughout their ten plus years of marriage. He left her homeless, with a ruined reputation and not a penny to her name. Lucky cousin Sarah was moving across the country for love and gifted the café to Kylie. Only problem is, Kylie has no idea how to run a café and she can’t even cook.

She is getting lessons from the part time cook, who specialises in bakery goods, until she has to leave for a family emergency. Kylie has to try and struggle on with her two young waiters and looking up recipes on the internet to see what to serve for breakfast, dinner and supper (as called in the small town). It is a small community, but is also where her ex-husband comes from and his aunt Dorothy has been spreading rumours about her. One thing that is true about Kylie, is that she seems to have an affinity for finding dead bodies and is a bit of a secret sleuth (like Madi Amos in the Avery Zoo series by Ruby Loren).

Kylie has two regular customers, Brad a police officer and Joel, the owner of the local newspaper and a reporter, who are vying for a date with her. Kylie is not quite ready after all that has happened in the recent past with her marriage and divorce. She has a good friend called Zoey, who has helped in previous criminal investigations with her. Now they find a hand in a remote field and her good customer Joel is said to be the prime suspect. They promise to help him and find the real killer.

This leads to many different trials, who had a reason to kill the man, called Morgan, was it the older ladies he was taking out for meals and romancing, possibly for their savings; or could it be a drug dealer or cop that has gotten hold of information that Morgan has been trying to sell for profit to whomever he can? Kylie’s involvement in the case is frowned upon by the authorities, but also leads to her putting herself and her friend’s lives in danger. She also has the struggle to keep the café running, without falling down from exhaustion, or poisoning anyone with some of her disastrous concoctions.

I loved the idea of an ‘Oops’ board for any goods not quite up to scratch to sell for full price in the café. It sounds like a perfect idea for more places to use. She has little in the way of belongings, but is finally getting accepted and even helped by the local community, which is something sadly lacking in most large towns and cities these days. The main characters all have their own roles, which are useful for their backstories and their interactions with Kylie are realistic.

I found some typos, as mentioned in another review, but they were minor in comparison to the enjoyment of reading an enjoyable, quick and easy mystery. This is book four in the Kylie Berry Mystery series but this is the first book of the author’s I have come across. I received an ARC copy of the book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

A cute and quirky cozy mystery. This is part of a series, and while I have not read the previous books, I had no problem following this one. There is some character development that I assume was played out in the books prior but other than being curious about some of the relationships, I don't feel like I was missing out. The Protagonist is a fairly new divorcee who moved to a small town to start fresh, and like most cozies, she ends up getting involved in a murder investigation. She has a small group of friends she can rely on, and they are each unique (some a little more colorful than others) and each play a small role in the story. There were a couple spots where it seemed like the story jumped ahead a little quicker than what I would have liked to have seen, but nothing major. There was also a couple scenes that while a victim, the police arrested her for no apparent reason... and none was ever given. (Of course the so called charges never stuck.) I don't know if there was something going on that I missed out on in the previous books, or what, but both those instances felt a little harsh if the only reason was because she was "a busybody sticking her nose in where it don't belong." The book is clean and safe for most ages. There is some drug use talked about and some mild violence. It reads quickly, and easily.

*I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

In between ‘OK’ and ‘like’

This was my first book by A.R. Winters, so it was a good test to see if you need to have read books 1-3 in order to understand everything. And no, it turned out it was fine. Some references to prior cases, but most persons were well introduced.

I had high hopes for this book. I had thought I would love it. But it never reached the high level I had expected; I was in two minds whether to give this an ‘OK’ or a ‘like’.

On the positive:
+It had a good pace;
+It was a pleasant read;
+It had a nice vibe.

On the negative:
-I haven’t laughed out loud once. If you state on the cover that it’s a laugh-out-loud mystery you create certain expectations and they weren’t met;
-I didn’t like how Kylie was stringing along two men. Yes, I know there is this whole reverse-harem-hype going on; doesn’t mean I have to like it;
-The overall feeling I had after finishing was: nothing was very realistic.

I still gave a ‘like’ because the book did give me a few pleasurable hours. Entertaining, yes. So, the benefit of the doubt. But there are better cozies out there.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems and voluntarily posted an honest review. I received no remuneration for it.

This was my first Kylie Berry book. I enjoyed all of the different characters. Unlike some books with a larger number of characters, the people in this book had such distinct personalities that it wasn't hard at all.

A fun, sometimes funny cozy mystery with a family of goofy characters. Enjoyable enough to make me go to the first book in the series and start reading.
One thing that was a bit irritating was the Joel/Kylie/Brad situation. I don't know if that started in earlier books and it is just a continuation, or if it started with this book. I guess that are just dating, but it seems that Brad and Joel are more serious than Kylie. I guess it will all pan out in future books.I

Another strange thing seemed to be the shift in language some of the characters had. They would be speaking one way, and then their speech pattern would change to become completely informal. It felt like the change was coming out of the blue. There seemed to be no consistency and I found it to be a bit disruptive to the flow of the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy.

I keep reading this series not because they are great but because I like to follow a series from beginning to end. These books aren't bad but I'm getting a bit irked by the fact that Kylie isn't taking any real steps to learn how to cook. It's really beyond belief that the cafe has been able to stay open this long with only have "oops board" items (and only 1 offering a day at that). It seems like this book is at least beginning to get the cafe up and running a bit (albeit at the end of the book).

I'm not really feeling the love triangle either. I'm not even sure it can be called that because so far I don't think there's been a second "date" (if you can call it that) for either Joel or Brad. But, it's clear they have fallen in love with her. Eh, doesn't really work that way. I am getting a serious Joanne Fluke Hannah Swensen feeling with this triangle and it really isn't adding to the storyline.

I'll keep reading, but luckily I get these books on Kindle Unlimited. I wouldn't pay for them individually.

🔍There's a lot more 🍴cooking in this Kentucky town than the questionable eats at Sarah's!😯

👍A fun and cozy whodunit with lots of quirky, small town characters. The heroine does not seem quite as hopeless in the kitchen as her reputation implied, but she is defintely trouble prone and curious enough to get herself killed (though her pet cat Sage seems safe enough!). Lots of suspects, dead ends and run-ins with an over zealous police detective who zeros in on the heroine as if she's the next Jeffrey Dahlmer!

No hanky panky despite two potential suitors for this recently divorced heroine who coincidentally settles into business in the town where her former in-laws live. There are plenty of plot line threads (murder mystery to solve, romance, getting her business into the black and keeping herself alive) that keep the story moving at a good pace. An easy, breezy and enjoyable read.:-)

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Love the book and the moral lesson behind the story, except...

I don't like the image that our main character is stringing along two men at once. She bounces back and forth and I don't think that is a good light for a woman to be portrayed, even if it is fiction: a sexual bimbo. It has shades of Stephany Plum, and I quit reading those stories because the sexual ping-pong the character played was nauseating.
Other than that minor irritant, I think this is a very good story. I like that the main character helps those less fortunate, and gets rewarded with kindness. There is a lesson for all of us in that.
She is also stubborn and tenacious (if at times a bit stupid in her choices and is pretty darn lucky she isn't dead yet).
Want to read the next one when written, but for goodness sake, have the girl pick one and stick with him! A good man with a good woman is a much better story than a bimbo who can't decide (says the woman married almost 20 years !)

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. It was a really cute and fun read. I have not read the previous books, so there was a little bit of disjointedness when previous events were referenced, but it didn't distract too much from the story. The characters are great and easy to relate too. Kylie's inability to cook and the fact that she owns a cafe are pretty funny and add a lot of humor to the story. I look forward to future books because I'd like to see how the relationships develop between Kylie, Brad, and Joel. And I'd like a lot more Zoey...she's so much fun! I read this during a hot summer weekend and it was the perfect match for lazing around and staying out of the heat.

OMG this book had me laughing so hard that my grandson came and asked me if his grandfather had given me laughing gas. I must say that this being in the "Humorous Cozy Mystery" series is one of the most accurate descriptions. Now I must say, the combination of Kylie and Zoe is one of the best teams I've seen lately--they are smart, witty, and bungle so many things, yet always get the right answers. The fact that Kylie is a chef in her newly owned cafe' and can't cook a worth a dime is hilarious in it's own right, but with the reactions her regulars give her about her not being able to cook, it makes it all the more funny. I have to say that the books in this series just keep getting better and better with each book I read!

I really enjoyed this book. I have read the others in the Kylie Berry series. Kylie is a divorced owner of a cafe who is not a good cook. Somehow she figures out how to cook enough to sell food to customers by having a discounted Oops board and making recipes from the internet. She has 2 suitors- one is Jake who owns the newspaper and the other is Brad a cop. She likes them both but is not ready to commit. Jake is accused of murder and Kylie and her computer expert friend Zoey investigate to solve the murder. They ruffle lots of feathers and almost get killed themselves. There’s a new cook to help her named Jonathan and Patty is back as is favorite customer Agatha. All in all a good plot and lots of action and likable protagonist.

Kylie and Zoe are at it again only its not them that are suspected of murder but Joel and he asks them for their help to work out who really did it. AS they get underway of course Brad tells Zoe to back off and also uses the promised date as an excuse to see a it more of her. There were some really good twists to this one and did not expect the killer to be who it was and as bad as it is I liked seeing that Kylie was finding running the cafe on her own wasn't working and she finally sees that getting help can really help in more ways than one as well as finding out her friends are really there for her.

Winters/a berry cunning conman

Loved the story, shows how a girl Kylie who lived in chicago, bounce back on her feet from being divorce and being ruined by her husband by telling lies. Finds herself in a small town in ky. Taking over her cousins eatery, and all the zany character's that comes to the eatery and involved in the investigating of crimes that involved her friends and even herself. Very entertaining, couldn't put the book down. You've got chaos mix with humor and to me that's winters style you find yourself loving the characters, and you feel like you want to be there in all the action that goes on .

Berry Good!

Poor Kylie, she tries hard, but unfortunately, cooking does not come easy to her. Lots of her “experiments “ end up on the Oops Board. Fortunately, for Kylie her friends & the community support her. Unfortunately, she finds herself involved in another murder, this one extremely grizzly. Fortunately, she has help with her investigating. Unfortunately, she finds herself targeted by both the police & the bad guys! There are plenty of humorous moments to lighten this chilling whodunnit. I am addicted to this series!

This is the first book that I have read by this author, but when the opportunity came up, I decided to give it a chance. I mean the plot alone of having a non-cook run a restaurant really did peak my interest.

The book was your typical cozy mystery with a quirky main character, a love interest (or two), a cast of fun and supporting characters, and a mystery that keeps you guessing. But this combination works and cozy fans will truly enjoy!

Now I need to go back and read books 1 through 3 in the series.

I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

Somehow the term "cozy" has been co-opted to mean "lead character is a chef/quilter/pillowmaker in a small American town". That's what this book is. It slightly plays against trope by making the lead character a poor cook, and giving her an Asian BFF. It's a quick read, but the resolution comes out of nowhere with a character introduced very late in the story. It doesn't play fair, in other words, with the reader. Not my kind of humour, either. I received an ARC copy.

Good read

The stories in this series are good, light reading. Kylie owns a cafe but can’t cook. She has a group of customers/friends that seem to constantly get her in trouble. I enjoy the stories but the editing is getting atrocious. The grammar is the worst. Tenses changed mid sentence, words doubled. Things like “me and Zoey” , “these ones!?” Yikes! It’s becoming distracting. Will try the next in the series and hope for better.

This is a really good cozy with lots of humor. Reminds me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. Kylie Berry is a lovable, quirky character and has a great sidekick in Zoey. Zoey can be a little scary at times but they are so funny together. Very enjoyable series!

I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Funny and clever

I always enjoy the books written by this author and I’m never disappointed. This book has all the right mix of humor, friendship, killer mysteries and a heroine that is smart but gets mixed up in all sorts of things. There is a bit of romance but it’s not needed and the story carries itself without it. There are a few contenders though. A great cozy mystery.

The tale is a fun read, but there are a few items that are a bit of a stretch! One is a woman that cannot cook basically anything, who owns a restaurant! I can cook better than that. Plus she seems
to find homeless master chefs! Why are they homeless? I know... drugs and mental problems! Anyway, a fun read and will read another!

A Cunning Conman

A Berry Cunning Conman continues the story of Kylie Berry whom once again gets involved in a murder this time though by finding an arm in the middle of nowhere. Comedy and a page turning storyline makes this book hard to put down with an ending that stays a mystery until the very end.

I like this the most of this series. The characters continue to develop. There is a diverse and fun mix of characters. When Kylie comes across a hand, she and Joey find themselves investigating another murder. That has them in the most dangerous yet. The cafe slowly continues to improve. And you have to love Sage her cat. This story was smoothly written in all the right ways. A keeper.

Keeps You Hanging On

If this is your first read in a Kylie Berry Murder series please leave it for later and being with A Berry Deadly Welcome.

Wonderful read, despite the editing errors. Great characters, wonder plot, believable fialogue. Are there problems? Yes, but it is such a good read you can get past the rest. Pay attention, because it all adds up in this series.
