Having enjoyed the first novel in the Eva Driscoll series, Run and HIde, I was excited to begin reading Seek and Destroy. At first, I was more than a little tentative about whether it would be as gripping as book one, but I should've known that McDermott can be trusted to produce a story with a plethora of heart-in-your-mouth moments. As always, there is non-stop action, and I really didn't want it to conclude. McDermott is one of the best thriller writers currently out there.

Fast-paced, with characters that are well developed and a solid, rollicking plot which holds some stunning shocks. This is an exemplary political conspiracy thriller which, if you can suspend your disbelief somewhat, you will likely appreciate and find it as compelling, addictive and a one-sitting read as I did. In my opinion, you will want to read the first book before this one as it details how the characters got to the stage they're at and explains some of Driscoll's behaviour. Seek and Destroy is a full-on and very enjoyable read.

Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC. I was not required to post a review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I absolutely loved the first Eva Driscoll book, so was chuffed to see that the follow-up was available relatively soon. This is another exciting action thriller, bringing back most of the characters from Run and Hide, although could be read as a stand-alone as a fair amount of backstory is filled in. I have not read the Tom Gray series, but plan to catch up with it when I can.

Set months after the events of Run and Hide, the team are living quietly in secret locations around the world. Henry Langton, having faked his death, is living on a remote Pacific Island plotting his revenge. When Farook, Eva’s IT maestro, is tracked down in India, his friend is murdered by the ESO to try and panic him into contacting her. When this fails, they target retired mercenary Tom Gray, and then his friend, MI5 agent Andrew Harvey, kidnapping their daughters in order to get them to give Eva up.

I enjoyed this, but for a story supposedly about Eva Driscoll, who was a fantastic kicka**e character in the first book, I was disappointed that she barely appears for the first 60%, and when she does, mostly it’s just to describe her appearance. This is actually much more a Tom Gray book, with Eva as a minor character, and when she does finally come into play, she is portrayed as selfish and heartless - perhaps not surprising given her background but not want I want from a heroine.

The early parts have far too much detail about Tom and Andrew’s domestic arrangements. I struggled with how incompetent the baddies were, but also that a seasoned MI5 agent could be so gullible. I enjoyed the return of Sonny and Len, but Rees Colbeck and Farook barely feature. I could’ve done without yet another kidnapped child plot line - I try to avoid them but they keep sneaking in. Once the action finally gets going this did end up being a fun read, and the ending leads us nicely into future adventures for Eva & co.
3.5 rounded up for good writing.

My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for a voluntary honest review. Seek and Destroy is available now.

Seek and Destroy by Alan McDermott is the second outing for ex CIA operative Eva Driscoll who she seen the last of the ESO an agency run by the rich and seemingly above the law and free to do as they please, when one of Eva’s former colleagues is traced and murdered it becomes clear that the ESO are still in existence and out for revenge.Eva is joined by Tom Gray whom readers of Alan McDermott’s books will be familiar with from the Tom Gray series along with a few ex colleagues do all they can to finally put an end to the most powerful and corrupt agencies in America.Once again the author has produced an excellent fast paced action thriller.
I would like to thank Alan McDermott,Netgalley Amazon Publishing UK and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to read Seek and Destroy.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Complex Espionage thriller! Powerful secret agency with a long reach internationally! Engaging characters! Pulsating plot and action packed! Recipe for a thrilling ride, right? My problem is the back story, which I didn’t know because I had not read any of the numerous books in this series. I can’t fault the author for this, so the 4 stars stay, with this caveat: read the previous books ! I trust that in doing so, one would receive more satisfaction than I did because of my lack of knowledge. I will read the next installment in the Eve Driscoll series! It’s an exciting storyline and the author ended the book begging for another!

*Thoughts*

Seek and Destroy is the second installment in author Alan McDermott's Eva Driscoll series. Months after the events of Run and Hide, Eva Driscoll and her team (Farooq, Sonny, Len Smart, Carl Huff, and Rees Colback) are living under the radar with new ID's since being pardoned by the American President. But, things are about to get very dangerous for everyone. Henry Langdon, the dark, shady man behind most of the governments of the world, and who was presumed to be dead by almost everyone, is very much alive and itching for payback.

Fast , furious and meh....

Two notes. First, I won a copy of Seek and Destroy from Goodreads for review. Second, I did not know that this book was the second in a series. The consequence of that was I felt as if I was dropped into the middle of a car chase sequence of an action movie. Who are these people and why are they trying to kill each other? I have read the second book of many a series and went immediately to buy and read the first book to see what I missed. Not for this series.
I am sure that affected my enjoyment of the book.

Eva Driscoll was a CIA agent who found out that there was a shadow government of sorts , a cabal of elites, who actually controlled everyone and everything.
Financial markets could be inflated or depressed at their will, wars started, political leaders toppled or exalted and everyone, everything, surveilled, influenced and killed if necessary. Eva, and her allies fought back, brought the cabal to light and destroyed them. The FBI, CIA, NSA gone. Almost.
At the beginning of book two, Seek and Destroy, the evil empire is striking back. Eva and her colleagues , who planned to live anonymously on the mega-millions they stole from the CIA and the other shadow organizations ,are nevertheless discovered. That begins the non-stop action of the plot.
The frenetic pace does two things for the reader: the pages fly by and it relieves the author of the duty of defining characters into something more that plastic action heroes.
There was a bit of a off-putting moment early on when the author describes Eva’s current living arrangements as being able to “get by “ on a half- million dollars a year. Really? Do you think so? Might be tough. Tough also for those others barely able to get by with their villas in the alps or on the beach. Considering that their money was basically stolen from those commoners for whom Eva’s squad fought and admired, and who also paid in the taxes, I had a hard time thinking well of the book’s heroes.
No matter. Everything logical goes by in a blur of whirring computers, cyber hacks, roaring cars and clattering weapons of all kinds. Our heroes manage to evade, fight and escape disaster while decimating the enemy. All of this is in the standard special ops format perfected by, but hardly equal to masters, of the genre such as Mark Greaney , Brad Thor, et. alia. Standard, imitative and repetitive.
I felt that this book needed one of two things, namely, to be edited more tightly into a single volume, or a prologue to the second book summarizing “ The Story So Far”. As it ended up, the book left me flat.
Nevertheless, remember my caveat to this review at the top, because if you read the first book, and liked it, you might like this one, also.

So: two stars; just an ok.

I've been a big fan of this author since I first got my Kindle in 2011 and discovered the wonderful world of self-published books. He's since got a well deserved publishing deal and has gone from strength to strength continuing with the Tom Gray series that is simply brilliant. This is the second in his new series, featuring some familiar faces from the previous so, to get the very best from it, you could do yourself a favour and read not only book one of this but the whole Tom Gray series first. They are all excellent books so... why not?
After the shenanigans of book one, Run and Hide which I won't go into here, our heroes have new identities and are living off the proceeds they siphoned from the now defunct ESO. They are ticking along quite nicely, if a little flatly; devoid of the excitement that their previous lives gave them. But their new found freedom is shattered when one of them is tracked down and they soon realise that although the head of the snake has been cut off, there is still life in the body. What follows next is a high octane, thrill a minute, action packed ride that had our heroes team up with Tom Gray as they fight for not only their lives, but those of their loved ones too.
Oh My! I started this book on a day when I had nothing important to do as I knew that once I immersed myself into Tom and Eva's world I would be powerless to tear myself away. I wasn't wrong and read start to finish pretty much in one, only stopping to eat and, well, you know!
As with all this author's books this is extremely well researched and plotted. His attention to detail never ceases to amaze me, as does his reflection of often quite scary things happening in the real world in parallel with those going on in his books. Part of why I enjoy his books so much is the credibility of what he delivers; hence the scary feeling they often give me.
It's action packed all the way through, with even the slower paced scenes adding tension and emotion to the proceedings, and this book is a bit more emotional than some of the others due to the nature of some of the things that happen and who they happen to. Sorry to be vague but, you know, spoilers! Needless to say that our heroes go through quite a bit on their journey and they rely on their smarts, skills, connections and training to try to save the day once again. As I got to the end, I was excited to see how it all panned out but also a bit sad and scared cos once it was over, I knew I would be leaving the characters once again, at least for a while. With how the book ended you know that there is more is to come, not a cliffhanger as such, just a door to continue the story, one that I will be waiting with baited breath to get my hands on as soon as I can.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

This is the second book in the series & I’d recommend reading the first book prior to this one as does set the scene for this book. It’s a well written fast paced story that I read in two sittings, there are edge of the seat moments. The characters are well fleshed. At times I had to suspend belief but it’s fiction so that’s fine. Tom Gray is also featured so I feel as though I now need to go & read the books about him. After reading these two books I’ll definitely read more from the author

This is one that requires reading of the previous books, as so much is mentioned regarding their exploits of the past, and at times does not really make much sense. However, along the lines of so many books of this type i.e. secret organisations wanting to take over the world; the goodies and the baddies etc., it eventually becomes readable. And my, my what champions the heroes are. But when all is done and dusted is there a hint of big brother is still watching?
Not a bad read, but really didn't urge me to get the previous novels.
Just recommended.

Seek and Destroy (Eva Driscoll #2)

She got away once. They can’t let it happen again.

Seek and Destroy is the second instalment for author Alan McDermott's Eva Driscoll series. I was so intrigued with the first book, Run and Hide. It left me wanting more. So here we are, I was not left disappointed. I have to say I am usually one to buck the trend when it comes to reading books in order. But I have to say, that in this case, definitely read them in order and I was so glad I did. Months after the events of Run and Hide, Eva Driscoll and her band of crew (Farooq, Sonny, Len, Carl, and Rees) have all gone their separate ways and all are living under the radar with new ID's since being pardoned by POTUS. But, things are about to get very dangerous (again). Eeek! - Henry Langdon, the dark, shady man behind (ESO) most of the governments of the world, and who was presumed to be dead by almost everyone, is very much alive and itching for payback. Looking forward to reading the next instalment, Fight to Survive.

Book Review: Seek and Destroy (Eva Driscoll #2) by Alan McDermott

A fairly well-written shoot-'em-up series.

In this installment, Eva Driscoll, the ex-CIA assassin and her formidable band of rogues of varying skill sets, haphazardly assembled - Tom Gray, Farooq Naser, Carl Huff, Rees Colback, Sonny Baines, Len Smart, Andrew Harvey shall have avenged Driscoll's murdered brother, with a presidential pardon to boot, and are now scattered around the globe with secret identities and enough money for retirement in the shadows of Hyderabad, Munich, Gran Canaria and Milan.

In outsmarting shadowy billionaire conspirators acronymed ESO, puppet masters and the "real power behind the governments of the world", Driscoll and associates managed to eliminate ESO's leader's son - which subsequently led to the demise of the leader, Henry Langton, dead by heart attack.

Now all safe and sound. Free and clear.

Or so they thought.

"WE FOUND YOU". One of them, Farooq, the digital magician, gets traced after a friend is murdered. Then one after the other, all get tracked, leading to the abduction of Harvey's children.

All all hell breaks loose - to retrieve the children - to seek and destroy. But who? Who masterminded the snatch? The ESO? Langton alive?!

The hunted gives chase to the hunters in hi-tech surveillance, shoot-'em-up transitions across continents, culminating in an island in French Polynesia, with some vividly portrayed attack action scenes reminiscent of Ian Fleming and the best of them.

The author is showing promise as international conspiracy thriller writer.

Former government operative Eva Driscoll is now living a new life, having avenged the death of her brother at the hands of the shadowy ESO. Her team is now scattered across the globe. All is well until she is contacted by a former team member, who tells her that the ESO is active once again and may be coming after her. Soon after this news, the children of two team members are kidnapped. The ransom: Eva Driscoll herself. Eva soon reassembles her team and based on data from the ESO itself, a mission is launched to find an island that doesn’t officially exist and rescue the kids. In an unexpected twist, it turns out that the former leader of the ESO is in fact still alive, having survived the last encounter with Driscoll.

Seek and Destroy by Alan McDermott is the second novel in the Eva Driscoll series. McDermott is an accomplished author, having written six books in the Tom Gray series and a spin-off novel, Trojan, which has been shortlisted for ITW’s Best Original E-book novel of 2018. McDermott previously wrote applications for Britain’s NHS and switch to writing full time in 2014. Seek and Destroy also features the return of Tom Gray. This book is well written, with believable characters and a plot that will keep you guessing until the end. I would recommend reading the prior book first so that you fully understand what led to the events in this book. I would give this 4/5 stars.

"Seek and /destroy" eBook was published in 2018 and was written by Alan McDermott (http://www.alanmcdermottbooks.co.uk). Mr. McDermott has published nine novels. This is the second of his "Eva Driscoll Thriller" series.

I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence, Mature Language, and Mature Situations. The story is a contemporary thriller. The primary character is Eva Driscoll.

Driscoll and her allies from the first novel have all been granted secret Presidential pardons for their efforts and have each disappeared. Unknown forces suddenly begin attacking those that have been helping Driscoll. Driscoll calls her allies in from hiding to confront this new threat.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 5 hours I spent reading this 272-page thriller. I read the proceeding novel in the series and liked both. This is readable as a stand-alone novel, though reading them in sequence would be preferable. While I really enjoyed this novel, it seemed a little rushed. I like the set of characters that have been created. The cover art is OK. I give this novel a 4.5 (rounded up to a 5) out of 5.

This wasn’t as good as Run and Hide but it was still good. Eva and her crew had to come out of hiding and Henry Langton wanted Eva out in the open so badly he had Harvey’s and Gray’s daughters kidnapped, Alana and Melissa, to bring them all out. When Eva and her team all got together and found out where Langton was all hell broke loose.

They came from all over the world when Eva called: Len, Sonny, Rees, Carl, and this time Thomas Gray, who has his own series, had no choice but to join them because his 5 year old daughter Melissa was taken.

There was a lot of action in this book and that’s what I read these books for. I did notice Eva wasn’t in it as much as the other book but that really didn’t bother me, as it seems to have bothered others’. There was so much going on, with so many different people; I couldn’t have expected her to be on every page.

There was a slight romance in this story; Eva and Carl stayed together from the last book. And the F-bomb was used 9 times.

As to the narration: Angela Dawe did a spectacular job. Everyone had their own voice but the one she gave Henry Langton was simply awesome, because when he spoke he really never spoke at all he yelled angrily. Her reading emotions were off the charts. Incredible job, Ms. Dawe.

Eva Driscoll and her partner Carl thought they had made a clean break from their superspy past. But the ESO does not give up its quarry so easy. They are embedded in all branches of business, finance and government, slowly putting their plan for world domination into action. But a faction within the ESO seem hellbent on rushing towards their endgame and Eva is one of the wrinkles in their plan!

Eva must gather together his disparate team and along with Tom Gray she plans to end the ESO once and for all. But the ESO takes no prisoners and everyone close to their targets are fair game, even small children.

Very fast paced, action filled thriller. Great set pieces of action interwoven with some pretty nifty character driven scenes. I had a lump in my throat at the scenes involving the threat towards the children and felt my blood boiling! That is one nasty nanny! As with life there are some losses along the way and as usual the ESO decides to have back ups to their back ups plans. They really are Machiavellian!! Great read.

Another winner for Alan McDermott and his heroine, Eva Driscoll. Eva is former CIA and is trying to stay under the radar after the last death-defying adventure. In this second book in the leader of EOS has faked his death. He seeks revenge and plans to put Eva and her friends out of business…permanently. Eva receives a secure message from her former CIA hacker. He is in trouble; EOS has killed his friend and he is probably next. Eva messages the men who aided her in the first book to warn them that they may be in danger. It will take the combined efforts of the entire team to thwart the mad man who is trying to take them out. Eva is a kickass heroine who attempts to stay one step ahead while trying to protect her team and their families. Will they all make it out alive? Will they finally put an end to the former head of EOS? This was a thrill ride from the very beginning as the involved plot methodically takes you through Eva and the teams’ efforts to combat evil. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

When you "poke a bear" someone is going to pay for it.

Reader's note: I was provided an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book by NetGalley in order to read before the scheduled public launch on 14 November 2018. I had read "Run and Hide" for them prior to reading the Tom Gray series. This book builds off of all those books. Below is my honest take on and opinion of the story.

Synopsis: Eva Driscoll and her comrades have left the United States at the insistence of its president. After the ex-patriots have gone their separate ways, one of them loses a good friend and is threatened. This causes a chain of events that appears to be unstoppable.

This is one of those stories that is not only action-packed but emotionally charged. A great read from start to finish.

Parental note: This is an international intrigue book which, as expected, contains violence as well as adult language and situations.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous one for several reasons. My main problem was I wanted to read this book because of Eva, but for most of the book she was just a very minor character. I’m not sure why the author why chose to ignore her and concentrate on less interesting characters?

There are also a few things in the story that I find a bit irritating. For example, one of the problems I have with modern thrillers is the idea that all electronic data is instantly available to everybody. The way CCTV cameras can be accessed to give recognisable images at the press of a key anywhere in the world. I suspect it’s movies such as the Bourne Trilogy that make people think that the secret organisations can get any data they want, at anytime, from anywhere, even when they don’t even know what they looking for. I think it just allows the author to be lazy when developing plots.

SEEK. & DESTROY. ..by Alan McDermott
A disc was delivered to Farooq showing that his friend Samar had been killed, he was the only one that knew were he was living. Now a message "we found you" came on the screen. Eva was with Carl in Munich,a good place to hide from the ESO. Now receiving a special ringtone, giving her a message, time was of the essence, and they needed to leave quickly. What ID to use that President Russell had given them. Farooq was not a fighter, almost in a panic without Eva to protect him.She sent out messages, to reassemble the team. Who had broken the rules, and what would be sacrificed to regain it. A. powerful plot with many.characters, was it one of them. The author has keep. readers in suspense to the end. Given ARC by Net Galley and Thomas. Mercer for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Can’t wait for the next one

The book was good with enough action to be satisfying. However one or two things were a bit too obvious for me. Tom Gray leaving his daughter with Harvey. For people who are MI5 present and past, that was sloppy at best. Clearly, if they followed him to London, they would know about Harvey. Also, having an accident happen to the nanny the next day? Red flag if I ever heard of one. I can understand being battle weary but it was ridiculous of Eva not to push Sanders for more details on who else is part of ESO. With the kidnapping this thread was abandoned and clearly it’s a mistake. I suppose it’s a set up for the next one. As for Gray, the whole I’ll disappear thing is ridiculous. Based on the past he should know that nobody just disappears so to burn his bridges with at least Eva is stupid and in fact puts his daughter in danger.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I'm glad I did.

Because I'm a bit OCD about these things, I figured it was worth the $1.99 to buy the first book in the series and read in order. I'm glad I did.

They were both action packed, start to finish. I finished #1 and went straight to #2. Now, I can't wait for #3.

Eva is a really good character. I like her, she's smart and resourceful, and wow - kind of ruthless, as well. Not your typical character for any book. Sometimes I could see the twists and turns coming, mostly because it's a given that Eva and her crew will come out on top. How they get there is always interesting, as is what they do when they get there. And they're up against a foe with unlimited resources, and it doesn't die.

If you like strong female characters and lots of action, you'll like this series.

Eva Driscoll sequel? More like a Tom Gray novella.

Great book, lots of action and heartwarming moments but it focused more on Tom Gray than the title character Eva Driscoll.

It’s clear the author doesn’t want to stop writing about Gray and this book gave him a perfect reason. I didn’t really learn anything new about Eva and I haven’t warmed to her like Tom Gray so it’s fine by me to hear a bit more about Gray and his crew. I almost forgot that Rees Colback was in the book.

Good story anyway and I think the whole evil organisation operating above the government could be a real thing.

Well worth a read, well after you read the Tom Gray books and the first Eva Driscoll instalment first.
Can’t wait for the next one.

I loved the first Driscoll book and this was a solid follow up entry. While the first one was definitely more of a conspiracy, spy-esque thriller, this one is more of an action packed adventure. There are some cool thriller vibes, but it definitely errs on the side of a Bond/Bourne type romp.

I will be interested to see where the series goes in Book 3. Book 1 definitely left off on a set up for this one, but I didn't feel this had as strong of a cliff hanger, which isn't a bad thing.

Recommended to people who like action-packed books. I would suggest reading the first book before this one, but it had been a while since I read that one and didn't remember all the details with 100%. I still felt like this could be read as a standalone.

After reading book 1, I quickly jumped into Seek and Destroy to see what happens next. I found it to have less action than the first book but still held my interest throughout. I did download book 3 after completing this review and how Eva and company react to their new life and dealings with the people she was trying to kill earlier.

Readers will have difficulty with the characters as there is not much development that occurs in this story. Recommending that readers start at the beginning of the series. The story still flowed well and no errors were discovered in the story. Eva is a superwoman, the ultimate warrior who knows her way around the system. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading stories about those mercenary groups who operate off the grid.

Alan has done it again, what a thrilling read. These books really are good and fast paced, the reader just about has time to breathe before the next onslaught. I love the characters and the way they all work together, this time a couple are lost along the way, which is always sad, but the story is cracking.

I love the fact that a woman is one of the main operatives too, and she’s everything to the storyline.

With Langtons men on her tail and chasing after her some of her team she knows it won’t be long before they catch up with her. She’s on the run again ......

I was lucky enough to win this book in a competition and was so thrilled as Alan McDermott is one of my favourite authors to read this book before the release date.
What can I say it was action packed from page one and what made this book even better was seeing some characters back from the Tom Gray series, I read this in 2 sittings as I could not put it down and can’t wait for the 3rd book. I highly recommend this book, I don’t want to talk to much about it and give away spoilers so I’ll leave it there. It’s a must read!!!!!!

I really wish I’d read the first book in the series before starting this one. The characters weren’t as “fleshed out” as I would have liked (but I’ll take the blame for that). Action and more action piled on top keep the story moving as the evil EOS comes back to life to haunt our protagonist and her crew. Plot development is well-paced as the story unfolds leaving the reader anxious for the next installment. I received an advanced digital copy through #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This was my first book from this author, this was the second book in the series, and although I think you could read this book as a stand alone, it would have been much better to have read the first book so that you would sort of have a understanding of what was going on. The book was action packed, and a reasonably good book. At times the book seemed to lull a little bit, but overall I would say it was a good read.

McDermott is a new author for me. Having read the first book in this series "Run and Hide", and loving it, I did not want to be disappointed with the second book. Needless to say I was not. I also enjoyed the second book. Sideline characters became more active in the second book, and similar to the first book the action kept going. There was not a lull in the pacing. I am truly enjoying this author, and recommend this book to all the thriller lovers especially those that like conspiracy plots.
