What a fun debut story! I really loved having the chance to participate in Angela's launch week blog tour and getting to read an early copy for review.

This is a light-hearted contemporary romantic story set in the rural south. The heroine, Lucy, is a waitress at the local diner, and she hasn't had any sort of relationship before. Her endearing country speech and her strong faith in God make it really easy to root for her as a character. Even so, she's no Mary Sue sort; we see pretty quickly that her life hasn't been easy or perfect, with her mother's sickness and the tragic loss of her favorite pet being two of the sorrows she has had to face.

The hero of the piece may not be a hero at all, though. He's intrigued by Lucy's witnessing to him, but he wants revenge before he thinks twice about God. I really liked this part, and it was a lot of fun to be kept on edge wondering if he's going to make the right choices or not.

All in all, an enjoyable YA contemporary, and an author to watch.

Thanks to Angela for a free review copy...no favorable review was required.

I loved this sweet novella! The writing was engaging and the romance was lovely. I actually enjoyed the ‘different’ romance included that doesn’t include kissing. And, being a reader of mostly fantasy / dystopian novels, it was nice having a little break from all the magic!

I couldn’t find anything I didn’t like! I think the title really fits the story well. I must confess, I really liked Sean a whole lot. His laid-back demeanor is great.

Five stars! I would definitely recommend to any lover of a clean romance.

Great job, Angela! Thanks for letting me beta-read;)

The Thief, the Damsel, and the Dragon by Angela R. Watts

“… the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.” ~ Psalms 91:13

Edward Prosner is going to steal from the small town mayor of Fall Springs, North Carolina. He’s got a flawless plan of action and is determined to return honor and justice to his father’s good name. The problem he faces? He needs a date for the mayor’s dinner party.

Lucy Levitt is a huge romantic at heart, but with her family’s ranch and her part-time job, she has no time for dating. She believes God will place her soulmate in her life when the time is right. When the new man in town asks her out, how can she say no?

The first date seems ordinary enough, but then they begin to realize that they can’t fight their dragons alone.

Review:

I originally read The Thief, the Damsel, and the Dragon as a beta-reader for Angela. Though not quite in its completed form then, it was amazing!

It was immediately the kind of book one begins and goes, “Hey, I gotta keep reading!” This was mostly due to the writing style, but it wasn’t long until the characters, setting, and plot dragged me down, and I was a goner!

You may think I’m biased. After all, the author is a very close, very dear friend to me and sister in Christ. I beta-read this book and have since helped the author get ready for publication and organized her blog tour.

However … this review contains my honest opinions. It really is good. I promise. Read it yourself if you’re not convinced!

PLOT: 4/5
Wow … definitely not what I was expecting!

Well, I guess I wasn’t sure what I was expecting going in. The only other story I’ve read by my friend Ang, Seek, was of a completely different genre (more spy thriller than romance, haha, and certainly a bit darker!).

I knew Ang and I think a lot alike when it comes to romance in books, so I wasn’t concerned about that, but … I was wondering what all was going on in my action/adventure-writing friend’s mind! Contemporary Christian romance? Like a Hallmark power-puff thing??!!

Turns out, there was a beautiful, lazy Southern summer romance with amazing Christian themes and a fantastic writing style! From the very first sentence this novel sucked me in and wouldn’t let me go!

CHARACTERS: 5/5
Lucy and Ed are now one of my favorite couples! <3 They belong together. Hush, no arguing!

Lucy is one of the sweetest, most fun female leads I’ve ever met. From the first time I met her, I was enchanted! Honestly, so much Southern charm and honey and just … ugggh! I love her! She is my best friend, okay? (Apologies to Bailey; you’re not Southern, so you’re gonna lose.)

Ed … well, I wasn’t sure what to think of him at first. He’s a rebel, and though I felt bad for him, I was also a bit annoyed at his flesh-ness. (You know, the lack of Jesus Christ and the much of Ed!) But by the end, I was on his team! <3 Also, I felt so bad for him, poor baby … *huggles him*

There were other amazing characters such as Lucy’s family (THE WHOLE FAMILY! <3 ) and Ed’s Irish friend (he needs no other descriptor!). However, if I went into each of them, this review would run too long, so I’d better stop!

SETTING: 5/5
LET ME GO TO NORTH CAROLINA. PLEASE. I’LL DO ANYTHING! (relatively speaking)

Maybe if I bug the Marine Corps* enough, my sister’s husband will get stationed close to there, and we can visit. Not that *coughs* I want her to move even farther away, butttt … y’know. It’d be a nice perk. I don’t like Cali all that much, sooo …

Seriously, though, the setting was absolutely perfect. <3 Love the Southernness, love the summerness, love the people who inhabit this Southern summer!

*yes, I do realize that government agencies are not at my beck and call … I just wish* …

**the more I think about it, the more I wish I had some sort of diplomatic immunity …

WRITING: 4/5
WHOA, there! This writing style! <3 <3 <3

CONTENT: 1/5
Language: n/a

Violence: n/a

Sexual: n/a

Other: romance and denial (y’know, the river in Africa). Not really content, but y’know …

Probably good for all ages, recommended for teens.

OVERALL: 4.5/5
Recommended to any lovers are fun characters, an amazing plot, a grabbing writing style, Southern summers, and sweet romances. Definitely get this book and read the heck out of it!

A sweet lil' novella about justice, love, and God's never-failing goodness. <3

The Thief, the Damsel, and the Dragon is a charming story of small towns and big hearts, old grudges and new love, a farm girl and an up-town boy.

The first half of the book had me wondering what on earth had transpired to cause Ed to hold such a grudge on the town's seemingly-upstanding mayor. And then the second half had me smiling over the redemption and forgiveness. <3

Lucy and Ed's love story was so darling! They were both such cute characters, especially in their interactions with each other. And let's not forget Sean. His banter with Ed was AMAZE.

I also adored the way Miss Watts twisted the end, as if Lucy and Ed wrote the story themselves. It was unique and so well done! <3

(Randomness here, but I just got to throw this in. The line about stealing something like the Declaration of Independence? I. Cracked. Up. xD #NationalTreasureFTW )

A few times while reading, I got confused as to what was happening. At first, I got SJ mixed up with Sean, but that sorted out pretty easily (and was probably just me). Then, originally, I was under the impression that Ed's parents USED TO live in Fall Springs—meaning they had since left—but then you find out that he moved there because of them and they live just out of town. There was also some head-hopping, but nothing too distracting.

A great little read! Definitely worth the hours I spent inside the pages. Can't wait to see more by this author! <3

4.5 stars bumped it up to 5 because I loved the Christian aspect and that refreshing romance!

Prose: 4/5
Romance: 5/5
Characters: 4/5
Plot: 5/5

Prose
I'm not the greatest at judging prose, but to me, this seemed good. Not exceptional, very good, nothing less.
Romance
Wonderful! I'm a bit biased, but oh well... I love how it wasn't oh hey I'm in love with you let's get married and they took a little more practical view. Also. Ed... ha ha! He didn't even know he was falling for her! *broad smile*
Characters
Good! I felt like some of the minor characters were a little 'cardboard' but Ed, Sean, and Lucy were pretty well-developed. (also, Mikey!! He's so funny!)
Plot
This was a very good point, it was very well-paced and flowed well. I liked the plot.
Overall
I loved it! A great novel! It was shorter than I'm used to (but to be honest that was refreshing, I usually read 200-400 page things)
Content: one cheek kiss, lots of talk about God/bible but I like that.

Angela R. Watts' debut novella did not disappoint.

This book had me holding my breath, hoping that the Thief would find a better way; hoping that the Damsel would see that she deserved some time to move past her fears to get out there and thrive! This was a beautiful pairing that, from their first meeting, I hoped would end up together. The characters were very realistic and sweet, genuine -- and I love how she wrote the characters' speech patterns as well! I could just hear the genteel Southern, even the lilting Irish. And I loved it.

This book was very easy to read in the sense that you'll find yourself tossing aside other plans or books while you finish this one. It's very well-written and has a firm spiritual strand within the book as well. It was rewarding to watch these characters develop reasonably, and they're characters that you can easily cheer for. Even the secondary characters have been well-developed and easily seen in the mind's eye.

The imagery and metaphorical values of the dragon within the book take on different forms for each main character, and I loved how artfully this theme was interwoven in the context of Psalms 91:13. The themes in this book were admirable and I found them hitting very close to home. I daresay that this was a book I needed right now! I highly recommend picking up this book if you enjoy Christian stories of romance and renewal.

Aww, what a sweet story! It was adorable and enjoyable, and I really loved it! Lucy is like, the best protagonist ever. I love her cute accent and the fact that she has a truck. A TRUCK, Y'ALL. #goals
I also love how this is set in North Carolina. Maybe just because I live there, but. It was a great story, paced really well, and the faith elements were amazing! I feel though, that I could've had some more description. Maybe I missed it, but I honestly can't picture what Lucy and Ed looked like.
Otherwise, it was quite a lovely book! Great read.

So, I have the feeling this may easily be a case of it's me, not the book. I liked the message and enjoyed the semi-slow blossoming of the romance, but a lot of it left me confused. This may be one of those cases where I'd have done better with a longer story, which is not unusual for me.

For starters, it took me most of the way through the book to realize that Ed's "thief" moniker was related to just this single incident and not part of a larger pattern. Which makes sense, but the way he was introduced, I totally didn't get that, so I had to totally reframe my view of him in about the last quarter of the story. Also, Lucy confused me a bit with her huge resistance to the idea of going on a date, coupled with the fact that once on the date, she seemed to have no qualms about either dancing or being kissed on the cheek. (Yes, that's my personal convictions and comfort levels showing through, but it made it hard for me to relate to her.) Certain plot points were wrapped up really fast, and others didn't seem to have much connection to the main storyline, at least that I could see.

Also, there were a couple small content things that bothered me more than usual just because they seemed so unnecessary. Specifically, swearing (no words, but mentioned) from a Christian character and drinking beer at a party thrown by Christians. I realize that the last one especially is one that people have different convictions about, but it would have been so easy to leave it out (it's only a couple of mentions) that it really grated on me.

I know that sounds like a lot of criticisms, but I really did like the message and the concept. I've read some of Angela's other works that I enjoyed a lot, so the fact that this one wasn't quite my cup of tea definitely won't stop me from reading more from her in the future. :)

Content--mentions of drinking; mentions of swearing (no words); a man plans and carries out a theft; some violence (not graphic); one cheek kiss

Somehow my review never made it over to Goodreads?? Who am I??

Anyway, here are my thoughts from back in July:

I love Ed and Lucy's love, okay? Those two were the cutest. Even though, obviously, they go through rough patches, I sincerely hope that they have a long and happy relationship together.
I also just enjoyed all of the characters. They were so well fleshed out; I love how supportive the supporting cast was. Lucy's family was realistic, Sean was fun and funny, and not gonna lie, I kinda want to meet Ed's parents, they seem awesome.
I did like how much Christian content was in here. Ed's arc with his relationship with God was great. And Lucy's faith is probably the most relatable portrayal of faith I've seen in a long time.
I'd definitely recommend it to people who want a sweet Christian-centered romance.

~wonderfuls~

the romance

The romance in this book was sooo sweet! It wasn't what I was expecting, but I loved it. Also, it was clean, which is always so good.

the setting

This book was set in a small town in North Carolina, which, if you didn't know, is just like where I'm from! I'm not quite sure which part of the state it was supposed to be set in, but wherever it was, Ms. Watts did a wonderful job with it.

the themes

I wasn't quite sure what themes would be in this book, but I was pleasantly surprised with how many different ones were packed into so small of a book. Forgiveness, love, mercy, honesty- it was all there.

~not-so-wonderfuls~

3.5 stars.

I had the honor of beta-reading this for Angela (who is super sweet and funny and just an all around amazing human).
It was a funny/cute story that also carried deep themes of forgiveness and redemption which is a rare find... especially in contemporary romance novels unless you're talking about Francine Rivers.

And I'm usually a very picky contemporary romance reader, but The Thief, The Damsel, And The Dragon captivated me to the very end. Very well done for a debut!

Lot's of references to coffee and witty remarks. Like Sean deserves the 'most quotable man of the year' award.
It's a short and sweet read. And I loved how she tied everything together in the end with the cheating and forgiveness. (Forgiveness is a big theme in this story AND I LOVED THAT BRO)

You know what? This novella was different from other forgiveness stories I've read. Perhaps it may come across as preachy to others, but I personally found this one to be a refreshing read. It hit me with all of the feels, and I found myself getting emotional many times... even realizing I want to be at a better place than I am at right now. And the cover, just.... the cover! It's just so gorgeous and professional looking.

Ed. I wanted to punch him, then I really loved him. He was such an idiot at times, but I guess he learned an important lesson about stealing as well as forgiveness. I actually find it funny that he cared strongly about something actually didn't even happen to him. I was super glad he got off of the dark path he was starting on, and ended up making a better life for himself.

Lucy was one of those characters that love God. Although she trusted and loved Him, she was like any other normal human being and doubted Him. She was a realistic character, and that's one of the things that are important to have in books. Her accent was so adorable! I also really loved how she was a writer herself. I loved what she had to say about books:

"Fiction is powerful - if ya have a book that has no hope... no love... it's just not realistic."

Angela weaved in Bible verses perfectly, one of the things that was very refreshing. The writing was done wonderfully, and I found myself really liking the romance between Ed and Lucy. It wasn't like the kissing romance we see in most books today (like sudden love), but rather more of a different love.

I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about this book, because of how clean it was. There was a moment with very minor "violence", but this would otherwise be something I think many others would enjoy. And after reading this, I know I'll be watching out for more wonderful works by this author. If you love clean Christian contemporary reads, then this would totally be the perfect thing for you!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions. I honestly am not sure what I was expecting when I started this short book and after finishing it, I’m not sure if it met up to my thoughts. I don’t think this book was my cup of tea as I wasn’t really a fan of the main characters, but the author shows potential for future books! I would suggest no head jumping in the writing style for other books, but the faith content was good. :)

So, first off, I have to state that most of my issues with this book fall into "me not you" category, and most readers seem to really like it, so don't let me be a naysayer. However, I am going to state why I didn't connect with this book.

1. It is not a medieval fairy tale. AGAIN, AS I SAID, THESE ARE ME ISSUES. This one's my own fault because I didn't look at the book description very carefully before picking up the book to read. I just looked at the title, saw "damsel and dragon" and just made that assumption. It's actually a contemporary romance, and while the title does fit the story, I wish that the cover represented the contemporary nature a bit better. Roses are timeless and I didn't notice the barbed wire. I dunno, maybe have the titular dragon trophy on the cover in place of the rose? (Also, while I'm on the topic of the title, does it bother anyone else that every word is capitalized? For this title, that's three words too many. My editor's brain is screaming.)

2. Possibly because it's so short, but most of the characters felt more like caricatures. Especially Sean. He's Irish, and that's the basis for about 90% of his personality.

3. The way that the southern accents were written got annoying sometimes. Now, I'm East Texan, and I know that there are colloquial differences between my own accent and South Carolina (where the book is set), but the constant use of "ya" in place of "you" and "your," among other things, just didn't feel right to me?

4. Lucy's first chapter was a sermon. Look, I don't mind a book with a strong Christian message, but when I get introduced to a character, I want to get to know HER, not hear a sermon from someone else. And looking back over the story, I'm not even sure that it was necessary to the plot. That opening gave me the impression of a girl who was struggling with her faith, but then she 180'd and spent the rest of the book pretty well grounded.

5. The setting just ... I didn't feel it. It was supposed to be contemporary, but my brain kept trying to put the characters in the 70's and earlier, just from interactions and social structure. I know it's a small-town, and again, colloquial differences Texas vs. South Carolina, but there was a naivete to the setting that just didn't feel modern. And then I'd get jarred out of the setting by a reference to a hoodie or a cell phones.

There were things that I did like about the story - the message was brilliant, and the romance was cute, but ... I just didn't connect and this wasn't the book for me. Maybe you'll like it better than I did.

this was so fun to read and absolutely perfect for around-valentine's-day!! so glad i snagged it at the sale!! that cover is also really pretty and the title is coooooool!!

ups :

// ok, so the plot was an enormous good point in my opinion. mostly because it's really similar to one that i'm writing, except that mine involves superheroes. basically this guy believes the mayor is a thief and decides to steal something from him in return - and the best time to do it is at this party the mayor is hosting!! so, in order to get there, he asks other-main-character, the girl, to go with him. and it's just so similar to my premise!! i was so excited to see what happened and i am 100% satisfied and delighted.

// the characters!! they have so much Ang-flavor, if that's a thing XD you know when you read a few books by one author and you just see that these characters are all so distinctly by that author?? they have that author's touch?? these characters are like that XD and i love Ang's characters. especially the boys lolololol they are so fun and cute and relatable and just all around entertaining. especially loved the best-friend-banter between Ed and Sean, and the brother-teasing from Mikey. Lucy was great too, but i kind of feel more connected to Ed in this case.

// it was so shippable!! i literally shipped at first sight XDD

// great message, great themes, great reminders. i connected a lot to Ed feeling like, "the Bible says God will forgive us if we ask but it seems too simple."

// i thought the pacing was really good? it was a NOVELLA but it had a really good story, plot, beginning-middle-end thing and i was very satisfied when it ended. not even like, GIMME MORE. (i do want more, though. but i feel like the book was the right length.)

downs :

// some minor typos/grammar/formatting errors, but hey that's all right.

// 4 stars!! definitely recommending to anyone who wants an engaging, exciting, and endearing novella to enjoy!!

Such a fun story! I totally recommend!

The Thief, the Damsel, And The Dragon has great spiritual messages and awesome characters!
The trial Ed went through was especially meaningful to me, mainly because of how it ended out! :D It was great!
I loved how Lucy trusted so completely in God, she had amazing faith during the story even though they were going through some hard times.
Sean was great too, I loved reading about him! Also Mikey! XD
I think that last chapter was my favorite! ;) And I loved how Angela finished off the story. (the very last sentence. So sweet!!
Will definitely be re-reading at some point.

This was a great great story! The plot and characters were done well and very relatable. The only questionable content was the music and the dance. Mainly, that is a personal preference though. It still deserves a five-star review. I will definitely read more from this author. She has done a surprisingly excellent job on the writing, and I recommend her greatly. Please buy her books!

Things I liked: The romance was just sweet! I just love how they weren’t all over each other but it was the kind of romance that is realistic and leaves you with a happy feeling! I also liked Sean. Irish people are just amazing y’all! Enough said. Then Lucy...she was a gentle strong...and her strength came from God! That’s something I appreciated!! Oh and one more thing. Mikey...I just want a brother like him!!! He was protective and a tease...typical for most guys;)

Things I didn’t like: I felt like Edwards reasoning for stealing was kind of lame...like maybe if it was something done against him and not his dad?? It just seemed a bad reason! But that’s my opinion!

Overall I liked this book! I recommend it for a short and sweet read! Notice how much I liked!?? It’s worth reading!

I'm not going to star this review because I'm a beta reader and I'm not sure it's fair, since the book still had some points in the editing process while I was reading.

This novella takes you to a small town in the country, where Ed -- an atypical thief -- plans his great heist.

Lucy, the girl, is a hard-worker and somewhat shy, but she's the perfect date for the mayor's party.

The descriptions are good and the story starts decent, but I wasn't enthralled with the ending.

I'm always telling myself to stay out of romances. Then I want something heartwarming and uplifting, so I return.

But I don't think I like fairytale endings. I want to see raw emotion laid open with a doctor's scalpel.

This book is for people like my sister, who like warm fluffy things. I'm not rating, like I said, but it was about 3ish stars for me.

I enjoyed this novella by Angela, a sweet friend of mine! <3 It was a quick easy read, with a fast-moving plot. :) I only wish there'd been more time to see the characters grow and develop, but alas, I always think such things about novellas. I love the cover and the title, and the themes of the book! I related to both of the MC's. It's hard to humbly accept injustice, it's hard to forgive, it's hard to confess what we did wrong, and it's hard to know how in the world to interact with the opposite gender. Angela did a great job, and I look forward to reading more books from her! I think my favorite character was Angela's younger brother. :)
