A race against time on every level, a story of a mother willing to put her son in harm’s way in order to save them both, and of another who discovers the inescapable bonds of blood. More than anything else in the world, nine-year-old Jacks wants to help his dying mother. A simple blood test could allow him to do that. But what Annie Brody hasn’t told her son yet is that they don’t share any DNA because he came from an anonymous woman’s egg. So why does the blood test show Jacks and Annie are related? The answer is half a world away where a young woman is battling famine, disease, and an endless war to care for 20,000 refugees, the only family she has ever really had. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s made enemies with the one man who controls the supplies her people desperately need. She alone holds the cure for Annie.
Bruce Borgos is the author of several novels, including the Porter Beck Mysteries. His latest, THE BLUE HORSE, is the third in the series starring Sheriff Porter Beck of Lincoln County, NV. https://bit.ly/TheBlueHorse
I have owned this book for a while but I was scared to read it. You see, I've known Bruce for many years and I have no choice but to write honest reviews... if I didn't like it I didn't want to be the barer of bad news since everyone here seems to love it.
Well im happy to report this novel knocked it out of the park!! From the very beginning I was hooked and was amazed at the depth of character development. You really get to know and love (or hate) just about everyone.
Additionally, the storyline was unique and well thought out. I was skeptical at first but it was really brought all together pretty early on. No plot holes to fill. Not going to lie, I even cried close to the end... a real true ugly cry.
The best part about this book is that I can imagine it as a movie. I know we all see books play out in our minds but this one is real Hollywood material.
Wow, Bruce, wow. I'm impressed... ok it's been 4 years, when is the next one coming out??
I've known Bruce Borgos as a Business Colleague for a number of years, and reading "Life Strings" represents my first experience with Bruce as a writer. Wow, I'm impressed and have already picked up his first novel "Holding Fire" (2016) and I can't wait to start reading.
From the very beginning of "Life Strings" I became engaged and interested in the characters and, through Bruce's words, was able to vividly picture Beka and her circumstances and root for her as she moves through her career and life as an adopted, single child. Beka's life-based twists and turns, coupled her US Aid work in Southern Sudan and her engagement with the other characters (especially young Jacks), makes for a interesting and insightful read. I was engaged from the first couple of pages and couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. Being an avid reader, I've come to judge novels on how much I think of them after I've finished, and I give Bruce's novel "Life Strings" a proud 5 stars! I wanted to learn more about these characters and see/share their lives post the last page.
"Life Strings" is fun, entertaining and very insightful, and I highly recommend it. My only hope is that the author, Bruce Borgos, remains the down-to-earth, great person I've come to know and doesn't get too big of a head because of all the great reviews he's receiving! All kidding aside, great job Bruce, and I eagerly look forward to reading your subsequent novels in the years to come.
I've found a new wonderful writer, and his name is Bruce Borgos! Thank you!
I never expected to read a story like this! This really is a story about survival.
Without giving anything away, I came away from this relating to each of the characters at different times for different reasons, all because of their struggles to keep living what they determined to be an authentic and meaningful life--with that life running out.
That critical balance of competition between your own precious life, and the lives of those you care about, is something that really resonated with me. This theme, on top of the mystery and action, made me really enjoy this read!
One of the good ones! This story touched my heart in many ways. Although parts of it were sad, the overall theme was a journey fraught with obstacles, some scary and violent, and some passionate, the ending was a tribute.
Improbable situation brings several related people together, even though they didn’t know they were related. All of it happens in war-torn South Sudan. This book, second by author Borgos, seems like a departure, given the other books he’s written since and the one book he wrote before this one. Certainly a lot of fast-moving action but the attachment to the land and most-fleshed out characters of his other books aren’t in this one.
This was a nice feel good read with a good look at the victims of war and the running of refugee camps and worse, living in one. But, it was also a love story with many parts. Charming.
