Emylin is a human. Her best friend, Damien, is not. He's the mysterious, handsome King of the Underworld. A social outcast, shunned by her peers, Emmy never felt like she belonged. She'd lose her mind if it wasn't for Damien.
Damien is the ruthless, other-worldly ruler of the Dark Faerie Kingdom. Meeting as children, they have had an unlikely friendship that is kept secret from everyone in both worlds. Fearing an uprising after his father's untimely death, the newly crowned King Damien must find a Queen quickly before the next Blood Moon. He sets his eyes on Leah, Emmy's classmate and bully, as the ideal candidate.
Emmy must now play matchmaker for her life-long best friend in order to save a secret, ancient kingdom mankind has never known existed. She also has to juggle Damien's crazy requests (like setting up his dates), Leah in her new life, work, her own college workload and the unraveling of a secret murderous plot that will endanger Damien and Emmy herself.
No one ever said being friends with the King of the Underworld was easy.
I adored this series on wattpad years ago. Reading it again as an adult really shifts your perspective on things.
I personally never felt any sort of romance between the two main character. I felt the author leaned heavily into character tropes (not like other girls / cool and stoic runway model guy) and gave us a main lead with no personality. In the time it was written, it gives very much the 2010-2013 tumblr girl aesthetic of trying to be different but shunning emotional relationships with men and other women. You have someone that supposedly loves their family and then never explore their relationship again after the first 5 chapters. She's a loner with no friends or socializing skills and forced to keep the male lead a secret. Like how is she supposed to develop any type of emotion when she's blank! She's suppose to develop for the male lead as her potential love interest. Except that's the problem, there is no relationship beyond surface level. A cryptic male lead can only go so far, leaving the reader wanting more, to develop and discover his personality. We have instances where he's kind, selfless, and "magical" based on her memories, but that's it. I don't see him develop as a charter. It gets worse after that forced love plot between male lead and female protags old high school bully. It's used for her to face her feelings, but then she contradicts herself the next chapter. Again, it's leaning into tropes for conflict and character with no fully fleshed out plan.
The mythical world building needs a lot of help. There's a war or two mentioned throughout the series, but also kingdoms of different elements, and a mixture of magic and modern but with minimal effort to intertwine the two. But the war, the crucial war that would really build the foreshadow, was delivered through 1 conversation every chapter or so. And that's where its lacking. How could something so substantial be left only to three sentence conversations? How could a mass genocide not effect societies? Literally pull inspo from a history book or even current political turmoils and use that as a reference! The authors reasoning is the villain has a silver tongue but EXPLAIN/SHOW/TELL what you mean.
The abuse scenes were....yeah. To break a character, you have to make them first. Sometimes violence used as a means to an end could work, but torture doesn't equal character growth. Using flashbacks to give readers a sense of trauma and how that affects her helps us sympathize a bit. But you could only lean into trauma as a character armor for so long. You can have 1 or 2 scenes where she feels hopeless in herself and her abilities but not all 3 books. That internalized self loathing, self depreciation on a character who already had a weak base doesn't make her.....appealing. When you read the same scenario almost every chapter, it loses impact.
Her second relationship is much more fleshed out. It was a slow burn and gave me a reason to like them, but the comparison to male lead and back and forth didn't keep me as enthralled.
I'm on book 2 and the lack of planning on the author's part is felt very heavily on the female protags decision making skills. Let's hope book 3 gives me a different opinion.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Scratch that. I LOVED reading this book! I love Em. I love Damien. I love the storyline. I love the numerous plot twists that make this book so interesting and never was I even for a second, bored! Unpredictable, funny, witty and full of suspense that made me anticipate reading each and every word. This is so far, my favourite book of the year.
AND!!! There is a sequel! Have to be, the way things ended. I can't imagine what would have happened had there not been *shudders* Can't wait to start reading!
This book was just too good. I really loved the story. Every second was just too interesting. I had to know what happens next. The story is about two best friends, Emmylin and Damien. Damien is the King of the Underworld while Emmylin is a human. They've known each other since childhood. Events happened which takes Emm to the Underworld. There, she learns things about herself. I ship them. I'll go read book 2 now.
Amazing book, and series. NOT a predictable plot. Characters that are complex and multifaceted, even the 'bad guys' have a level of nuance to them that most books etc can only dream of.
Wish there were more stories set in this fabulous world - there are so many established characters that I'd love to learn more about.
Sooo good, I would not stop reading it. The story of childhood friends from different worlds. The obstacles of the new king and having to get married. Him picking her nemesis! Lol
The plot twist in the end was great too! Can’t wait for more!
I loved this book!!!!! I read it on Wattpad, and wasn't with high expectations, but the book surprised me for sure! I haven't read a book that kept me really attatched for a long while. Worth the reading, absolutely! Already on book 2!
This is an amazing book!!! It has a unique storyline and I absolutely loved it. And it's my second time reading this book. I'm moving on to the sequel immediately!!!
I read this book in a day. I loved it and cant wait to read the second installment! While the book had some predictability with it, it was still an enjoyable read for a lazy Saturday.
Is this mi libro favorito? O sea la paso demasiado bien leyéndolo no importa que sea la segunda vez que lo lea. Necesito que resuban el segundo para salir de un pozo depresivo, gracias.
