Jordan L. Hawk is a trans author from North Carolina. Childhood tales of mountain ghosts and mysterious creatures gave him a life-long love of things that go bump in the night. When he isn’t writing, he brews his own beer and tries to keep the cats from destroying the house. His best-selling Whyborne & Griffin series (beginning with Widdershins) can be found in print, ebook, and audiobook.
... which is good if you liked the earlier books! Action, weird magic, horror that's not too scary, and likable characters (plus bad guys and questionable gals who aren't).
So I read the first book about 2 weeks ago and fell instantly in love with the series. So much so that I immediately bought the entire series in the 3 volume collected editions. I Have just finished the 9th book, having been so hooked I read the entire series back to Back.
I could not recommend this series enough! It’s a combination of Victorian mystery, meets lovecraftian horror, meets queer romance. Now if you’re not into/tolerant of gay sex scenes, then maybe don’t choose this series as they can be quite detailed and frequent in the earlier books. But even if you’re a heterosexual male id recommend reading this and just skipping those scenes. The writing is skill full, the language used is interesting and the books each have their own unique storylines which build to a fantastic overall story arc. I can’t wait for the 10th books release next month. I will probably end up buying the entire series in paperback too so I’ll have hard copies for ever. In the mean time, I think I’ll go back to book one and start reading it all again.
Wow. I'm just stunned at how good these books are. I'm also a little amazed at how I've gone from disliking or distrusting some of the characters to actually cheering in my head when they show up.
I'm also a little bothered by how not bothered I am with Whyborne's new and improved powers, especially considering how very much I'm ticked off by the same sort of thing happening with another fictional character who shall remain nameless. I just appreciate Whyborne's reluctance and the humor in these books more than the others. I love how unsure he is but pushes himself onward anyway to protect the people he considers family.
I'm still very much hooked. I adore Whyborne and Griffin. Since the sixth book the perspective switches between the two and I love it. In the books before I often asked myself how Griffin sees some of these situations, especially the ones where his Ival gets self conscious. It's nearly exactly as I imagined it which just shows how well the characters are written and how well you're able to connect with them. I'm going to read book 10 and it's just a couple of days until book 11 is published. I'm still looking forward to it.
I'm really looking the characters more and more with each book. It's fascinating to read the evolution of their personalities and relationships between the first three books and these. I'm looking forward to finishing the series
The very first books were better because of the novelty of the universe. But the following ones are also great. Also Whyborne in becoming more confident and that's great :)
