This sixth instalment in the Jack Forge, Fleet Marine series shows clear growth in the protagonist. Jack has finally started to feel like a fully-formed character, with more depth and maturity than in earlier books. His development adds a needed layer to the otherwise light plot and helps carry the story.
That said, the book still feels somewhat underwhelming. The storyline is serviceable but not particularly gripping, and it leans heavily on familiar beats without breaking new ground. The pacing is brisk, but the brevity of the book leaves little room for any real narrative weight or complexity. Just when things begin to get interesting, the story is wrapping up.
Overall, Forged Under Siege is a fun, fast read with a protagonist finally settling into his role. It remains a series best enjoyed in quick succession rather than for individual depth. A decent entry, but still leaves you wishing there was more to dig into.
