#1 Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon bestselling author Melinda Leigh is a fully recovered banker who learned that writing books is way more fun than analyzing financial statements. Melinda’s debut novel, SHE CAN RUN, was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers. Since then, she has garnered numerous writing accolades, including two RITA® Award nominations and an induction into the NJ Romance Writers Hall of Fame. Her novels have sold more than 15 million copies across the world. Melinda loves martial arts, rescue dogs, and sea turtles.
Melinda Leigh has written another winning installment in the Morgan Dane crime thriller, private investigation, and romantic suspense series. Secrets Never Die, the fifth book, features Morgan along with private investigator Lance Kruger racing to find and prove the innocence of a sixteen-year-old murder suspect.
When Paul Knox, a retired sheriff’s deputy, is found shot to death in his home, his teenage stepson, Evan, becomes the prime suspect. He’s also disappeared which makes him look even more guilty. His mother begs Lance for help. He, Morgan, and Lance’s boss, Lincoln Sharp, team up to search for him and determine who the killer is.
Morgan is a former prosecutor who is often underestimated by others. She’s intelligent, generous, compassionate, determined, and loyal. She’s also not easily intimidated and tends to collect strays including two dogs named Snoozer and Rocket as well as people who need a helping hand. While she’s tactful and a terrible liar, she’s also great at fact manipulation.
Lance is an ex-police officer turned private investigator after an on-the-job injury. He’s intense, courageous, and is his mother’s caregiver. He likes to be in control and tends to get tunnel vision on a case. His moral code is slightly flexible and his temper can run short with those lacking common sense. He and Morgan have been dating for several months. Sharp is a retired police officer who started his own private investigation firm and hired Lance. After suffering a serious injury on a prior case, he is struggling to get back to full health.
This novel is part investigation, part family drama, and part crime thriller with a little romance. It’s largely from Morgan’s point of view, but there are some sections from others. The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and includes some very intense scenes. The gripping storyline has several twists and turns. My biggest quibble is the ineptness of the official investigation. I continue to enjoy the way the author weaves in events of the characters’ personal lives into the story which provides depth to both the storyline and the characters. Themes include murder, greed, teamwork, parenting, family drama, secrets, lies, and much more.
Overall, this entertaining and compelling book has twists with great characterization and a tangled plot that was gripping. If you are expecting a solid series that will have mysteries, crime, action, and a little romance, then this is a series that I recommend. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was March 19, 2019. ---------------------------------------- My 4.63 rounded to 5 stars review is coming soon.
Secrets Never Die by Melinda Leigh is the fifth book in the Morgan Dane series. Each book in the series features a new case, so they could be read as standalone novels.
Morgan Dane is the lead character in the series, a defense attorney and a mother of three, working with her former high school boyfriend turned P.I Lance Kruger.
When a retired sheriff’s deputy is shot to death in his home, his troubled teenage stepson, Evan, becomes the prime suspect. The fact that the boy disappeared from the scene of the crime, makes him a prime target. Now it’s upto Lance and Morgan to uncover the truth.
The story can be described as a part detective story- part action thriller. Right from the start, we are aware of the facts (like who is not the killer) which the investigators are not. Though it was still fun watching them solve the puzzle, it took away a bit of the mystery.
The story and the characters were easy to follow. Morgan and Lance's characters were well written, along with other minor characters. Having not read the previous parts, some backstory of the characters could have helped. I felt Morgan herself had very little to do in the story, especially in the investigation part.
While this story was well-written, it felt somewhat predictable. The ending of the book was very fast-paced but had more action than mystery. After all the build-up, the final reveal was a bit anticlimactic. I really enjoyed the action in this book, but the action elements overshadowed the mystery parts. Finally, it was a good story with some great action sequences and overall an enjoyable thriller. 3.5/5
Many thanks to Netgalley and Montlake Romance and the author Melinda Leigh for the ARC
Well crafted as are most of her books, Melinda Leigh embarks on the fifth Morgan Dane/Lance Kruger mystery with Secrets Never Die. Morgan and Lance are settling into domestic life together since becoming engaged and Lance’s house burning to the ground. Lance experiences a grueling introduction to fatherhood with Morgan’s three little girls coming down with a very messy variety of the flu. After the girls seem recovered, Morgan and Lance have hopes of a full night’s sleep. Wish on mes amies, wish on. The phone rings, Tina Knox, newly married to a recently retired deputy sheriff has just found her husband shot to death in her home and her son, Evan Meade is missing. Lance is Evan’s hockey coach and has established a strong relationship with the troubled son. Since Morgan is a defense attorney she accompanies Lance to the murder scene, both of them arriving before the police. It isn’t long before Evan becomes suspect # 1, despite evidence that Evan has been wounded and may be on the run from the killer rather than being the killer. Once again, Morgan, Lance and Lance’s friend and partner, Lincoln Sharp find themselves opposing the sheriff and district attorney. The book then becomes a thrilling escape story of Evan and the ensuing chase by Morgan and Lance to save Evan; and a full court press by the police to arrest him. After all one of their own has been murdered. At the same time Lincoln Sharp, Lance’s partner in their detective agency is investigating Tina’s lies and omissions that have come to light. Linc is aided by the reporter Olivia Cruz, much to Linc’s dismay and secret delight. Maybe in later books their developing relationship will replace the totally missing heat from Morgan and Lance; hotness level around zero in this book. As I wrote earlier, the escape and chase were thrilling, while at the same time Tina’s developing story was unexpected and took the story in a surprising direction. Lance’s total immersion into the joys of fatherhood was both amusing and touching. He is such a natural that I hope there might be other children. Yes, these characters live for me. So sue me. My major quibble is that at times the writing seemed a bit dumbed down; especially with the ‘Perils of Pauline’ ending of some of the chapters. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When sixteen year old Evan Meade arrives home after his curfew, he expects to see lights on and parents waiting, but instead he finds a dark and silent house. Until he hears the gunshot. Rushing towards the sound, he sees his stepfather, retired sheriff’s deputy Paul Knox, bleeding out on the floor with a menacing man standing over him holding a gun. The next thing he knows, Paul turns to him and says “Run.”
A few hours later, Tina Knox arrives home and finds her husband dead in a pool of blood. But her son is nowhere to be seen. Frantic that he may be in danger, she calls the police, but not before calling Lance Kruger, a private investigator as well as Evan’s hockey coach, and his defense attorney partner, Morgan Dane.
As the investigation into Paul’s murder heats up, the evidence against Evan begins to stack up. But both Tina and Lance can’t believe Evan would kill his stepfather. Just as it looks like the case against Evan is open-and-shut, however, another sheriff’s deputy vanishes and his connection to Paul throws the investigation into a frenzy. And with Evan still missing, Morgan and Lance fear that he may be the next target, as they are convinced he’s not the perpetrator. As secrets start to unravel and lies are exposed, there’s only one thing they are focused on. Who is behind this reign of terror? And will they catch them before it’s too late?
I don’t know how Melinda Leigh does it, but every time she adds another book to her Morgan Dane series she out does the last and Secrets Never Die is no different. The fifth in the series, it is a finely crafted story full of suspense, breathtaking twists and turns, and just a little romance.
Like the four previous books, the characters development has built incrementally with each addition. Both Lance and Morgan become deeper, more fleshed out individuals that are genuine and true-to-life with gripping interpersonal relationships and, in addition to Sharp, you’ll fall in love with their characters. But just as much as you love them, however, you’ll find several you’ll love to hate. The perfect dynamic for any plot.
And what a plot it was. Skillfully spun with clever twists and turns, I was hooked from the very first line, not wanting to put the book down until I turned the very last page. Not once did the tempo lag or the events feel unoriginal or contrived. Slowly building in tension, the climax, while perhaps slightly dramatic, definitely provides the perfect amount of hold-your-breath anticipation that required pages to be turned faster and faster.
Unable to put this book down, I highly recommend both this series and Leigh’s other novels, especially her Bree Taggert series (which is somewhat of a follow-up to the Morgan Dane books) and Scarlet Falls trio (which, in turn, is a prequel of sorts). Even if you aren’t a fan of romance, these books will not disappoint any mystery/thriller lover as these books only hold a hint of romance. Point blank, if you haven’t picked up a Melinda Leigh book yet you’re missing out. I do have to preface that each series should be read in order or the character development will be lost and plots spoiled. Now off to get the next book, Save Your Breath. Rating of 5 stars.
Secrets Never Die by Melinda Leigh is the fifth installment of the thrilling romantic suspense Morgan Dane series. Each book in the series features a new case to solve so they could be read as standalone novels if choosing to do so. However, there is character development that carries over book to book so it’s always best to read the series as a whole. This series is also a spin off of another of the author’s but I have not read the first and never noticed anything missing from these novels or felt as if I had missed anything.
Morgan Dane is the lead character in the series, a mother of three that had returned to her home town after the loss of her husband. Morgan was a former prosecutor but she is now on the other side of the courtroom taking on cases as a defense attorney. With every new case Morgan works with her former high school boyfriend turned P.I., Lance Kruger.
This newest case for the team to solve comes when there is a murder and the teenage step son of the victim goes missing. The mother contacts and hires Morgan, Lance and their partner, Sharp, to find her son when she is determined that he is also a victim and had been kidnapped but police turn him into a suspect for the murder.
This entire romantic suspense series has been a favorite of mine from the beginning. Each read is action packed and oozing with suspense from the opening pages until the very end. These are also lighter on the romance side with a slowly developing clean romance storyline carrying over from book to book which is a nice change of pace for a genre that usually rushes the relationships to the steamy side. With this series I’ve definitely become a fan and will continue reading any from Melinda Leigh.

Evan Meade returns home late one night after hanging out with his friends only to witness the brutal murder of his stepfather, a retired deputy sheriff. The 16-year old literally runs for his life with the killer in pursuit. Private Investigator Lance Kruger is called to help by Evan’s mother when she comes home to the carnage and attorney Morgan Dane, his fiancée, accompanies him to the scene. They arrive before law enforcement who makes it clear that Evan is their primary suspect. As Lance and Morgan work to find Evan, they also know finding the actual murderer is paramount to protecting him. However, the deeper they probe, the more confounding and sinister the situation becomes.
The opening of this story was chilling and concern for Evan started immediately. We know he isn’t the killer and that kept me on edge for the rest of the story. It becomes extremely dangerous for Lance, Morgan and fellow investigator Lincoln Sharp who has also involved Olivia Cruz, the reporter who helped them in an earlier case and seems to have attracted Sharp’s attention in a personal way. Things get scary as old connections to Evan’s mother emerge who deserve to be feared.
The pace of the story kept me engaged as there weren’t many decent stopping points. It was exciting and thrilling, though some of the chase scenes got a bit complicated for me. There were softer moments, however, as Lance’s relationship with Morgan’s daughters deepen and he begins to develop paternal bonds. It was a sweet aspect that provided relief to all that tension. I also liked what appears to be something growing between Sharp and Olivia. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving character. As usual, the narrator delivered a fine performance, her storytelling skills put to the test. I enjoyed this one even as it took some time for the facts to unfold.

Mystery and Suspense and a plot that kept you guessing to the end. One thing you know for sure is that this book will hold you attention and keep you guessing.
Attorney Morgan Dane and PI Lance Kruger will always fight for their family and Lance considers his hockey team "his kids". When one is accused of killing his stepfather, a retired sheriff's deputy, Morgan and Lance fight the Sheriff and refuse to follow along with his ideas and procedures. They set out to clear Evan and find a whole passel of trouble doing that.
Evan knows he is 2 hours past curfew, but he doesn't care. What he finds in his home is the stuff of nightmares and he flees for his life after being shot. Evan doesn't trust anyone and struggles just to stay alive. Why would anyone want to murder Paul and shoot Evan? Lance and Morgan have a lot uncover and sort in order to solve this one.
Secrets Never Die was another phenomenal installment in the Morgan Dane series with an intriguing case and a few unexpected twists along the way.
After a retired sheriff's deputy is found shot to death in his home, the police are determined to nail his killer. Their prime suspect? Evan, the victim’s teenage stepson who disappeared from the scene of the crime. Convinced her son isn’t the killer, Evan’s mother asks PI Lance Kruger to find her son. Lance doesn’t believe Evan is guilty either so he and defense attorney Morgan Dane set out to find the boy. But as Morgan and Lance dig into the case, they uncover a few surprises that could mean Evan is the killer’s next target.
The murder case in this book was interesting as we see the murder happen and know whether Evan is guilty or innocent from the start. It was definitely a change of pace to know something of such importance while the characters didn’t. I enjoyed watching everyone work the case and despite us knowing the situation with Evan, there were still plenty of surprises along the way. Sharp’s storyline in particular was the one that kept me guessing the most and I was happy to see the return of Olivia Cruz in his storyline. The ending of the book was very fast-paced with a bit more action than the previous books in the series and I really enjoyed it.
Morgan continues to be an amazing main character and I’ve enjoyed watching her grow from book to book. She’s much more confident in her abilities now and I was happy to see her on a more solid footing after the events of the previous book. I’m loving the direction her relationship with Lance is going and how far the pair has come from book one. At the end of the previous book in the series, Lance moved in with Morgan and we get quite a few family-centric scenes in this book. I loved seeing Lance bond with Morgan’s daughters and how they’ve become a family. We also get a few scenes with Morgan’s grandfather who is a fantastic character and I love how he helps Morgan work through the case when she gets stuck.
Secrets Never Die was just as fantastic as the rest of the series and I can’t wait for the sixth book, Save Your Breath, to come out. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for a new romantic suspense series to check out.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Morgan Dane is a defense attorney. She works along with Lance Kruger who is a P.I. The two are newly engaged and were once in a relationship when they were in high school. When a teen boy is the primary suspect in the murder of a sheriff's deputy, Morgan and Lance investigate the death and try to prove the boy's innocence.
Morgan and Lance are finally settling into domestic life, and have just dealt with the difficult scenario of Morgan's three little girls dealing with the flu. Just as things settle down and they could possibly get a good night's sleep, they receive a phone call that throws them into a complicated case.
When they discover the shooting of the deputy and the fact that the stepson is missing, Lance is eager to help. He coaches Evan in hockey and is positive Evan couldn't be the killer. But Evan has disappeared and Lance and Morgan desperately try to discover his whereabouts.
Secrets Never Die is the fifth book in the Morgan Dane series. I haven't had the opportunity to read the previous novels, and I think this did great as a standalone. While the couple struggle to locate Evan, he is on the run for his life. There are a lot of clues, and sadly, a few point to his guilt. But, again, Lance knows Evan couldn't have been capable of such a brutal crime.
What a thrilling story! Much like a chase, from beginning to end. The thing is, the reader knows from the very outset that Evan isn't the killer. Now Morgan and Lance have to find him, and also discover the true killer. I found this story by Melinda Leigh to be captivating from the very first page and the tension, drama and danger never let up. I will most definitely continue the series. The next book is Save Your Breath, scheduled for release this September.
Many thanks to Montlake Romance and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
SECRETS NEVER DIE (Morgan Dane Book 5) by Melinda Leigh is a romantic suspense/PI mystery. I cannot get enough of Morgan, Lance and the whole cadre of secondary characters. The only reason I put this book down was because I had to go to work.
Tina Knox comes home from work to find her husband, a retired sheriff shot dead in the den and her teenage son, Evan missing. Tina calls PI Lance Kruger for help because her son is on Lance’s hockey team for at risk teens. As the evidence begins to come together, Evan goes from being considered a missing person to the prime suspect.
Lance and Morgan work together to locate Evan and find evidence to prove him innocent. Just when the trail goes cold, another deputy goes missing. Is his disappearance connected?
Also, Lance and Morgan do not believe that Tina is telling them the whole truth. What is she hiding and is it connected?
Lance and Morgan fear Evan is the killer’s target. Will they be able to find Evan alive and unravel family secrets that put everyone in jeopardy?
Once again, Morgan and Lance go all out to prove the innocence of their client. It is difficult to not give away secrets because I want everyone to see how clever Ms. Leigh is with her plotting. She gives you a fast-paced, page-turning, intense read with plot twists that always surprise me. Morgan and Lance’s relationship continues to develop and they are a powerhouse couple at home and on the job. I always look forward to catching up with all the secondary characters, also.
This is my favorite series by Ms. Leigh and I am going to be very sorry to see it end. Until then, I highly recommend this book and the whole series for great reads!
Secrets Never Die is a steady and interesting read, with an engaging mystery and quite a bit of tension. In this new addition to the series, the focus stays on the investigation, with the romance taking a backdrop to the plot as the pieces fall together (rather conveniently) to solve the novel’s mystery arc. There isn’t much character or relationship development, but the story does deliver some really intense and lovely character moments.
Melinda Leigh’s writing, once again, captures the reader’s attention right from the very first chapter. This book feels a little bit like a filler, but the narrative is smooth and the shifts in POV are very well done and bring tension to the plot. It’s a very nice set up for the next novel, but feels a little lukewarm in comparison to the previous books in the series.
I just??? Don’t know???? This one didn’t work for me as well as the other books did. It is as if this novel lacks a bit of the charm and the romance and the danger I’ve come to associate with Morgan Dane novels. I guess I just didn’t connect as much to this story as opposed to the previous ones, so I get the feeling that something is missing. It might be that some of the familiar faces we’ve become used to don’t really get that much page time in this book, which just shows how amazing those characters are.
Even so, Morgan and Lance (and Sharp!) continue to be lovely narrators. The different POVs still work rather nicely with Leigh’s plot development, especially as it serves to amp up the tension in regard to the main plot twists and reveals. I do love Sharp chapters in particular, but the action that follows Lance is also great to read about.
The mystery is a bit… meh to me. It’s quite predictable once one piece of information is introduced, and there isn’t really a big twist once you find out who the bad guy is. I guess, with the way things are presented, Leigh offers the possibility of this huge big twist to happen, only not to follow through and pick the easiest and most convenient way for everything to be solved. So that’s a bit of a bummer.
Overall, Secrets Never Die is a nice addition to the series and a good and entertaining read with some action and small sprinkles of romance. The narrative is great as always, even as the mystery falls a little flat. It does set up some nice threads for the next book, so I’m curious to see what’s next for Morgan, Lance, and Sharp!

Series: #5 in the Morgan Dane series. POV: Told from Morgan, Lance, Sharp, and Evan’s POVs. Content Warnings: Steam: No steam! Cliffhanger: No. HEA: Up Next: Save Your Breath.

Throw in a police procedural-type story and I know Melinda Leigh can make it shine. Leigh’s Morgan Dane juggernaut—into its fifth book here—keeps rolling on and shows no sign of abating and for good reasons.
Morgan and Lance tackle a case that has gotten law enforcement into a tizzy: the murder of a retired deputy sheriff, his missing stepson and the current inclination of the authorities to blame it on the latter. The setup is admittedly formulaic (and a little anti-climatic as well) but nonetheless absorbing, easy to follow, with protagonists you know you can put your last penny behind.
I loved catching up with Morgan and Lance, whose relationship grows from strength to strength. Past the sexual tension, the getting-together, Morgan/Lance’s solid partnership is never in question. The return of the odd, power couple as a crime-solving duo is always welcome of course, yet I find that I miss the heat between them—something that Leigh now glances over—even though I liked the progression of their relationship. Essentially, much of ‘Secrets Never Die’ deals with the investigation process and the superhuman strength that both Morgan/Lance seem to possess in the few days within which the story takes place, with only a very, very faint whiff of romance even with the introduction of a potential secondary pairing of Sharp and Olivia.
In any case, Leigh’s solid writing gave me a good ol’ crime mystery to solve and if you aren’t bothered by the seeming lack of romance) ‘Secrets Never Die’ is a pretty good all rounder.
This was a roller coaster of a book. I really liked it though because we do get some movement on Sharp and Olivia (becoming one of my favorite characters) as well as Morgan coming to terms with what another marriage means to her.
"Secrets Never Die" follows a kid on the run and many in the community thinking he shot his stepfather, a retired sheriff deputy. When Morgan and Lance are brought in to help, they are dealing with a sheriff's office out for blood and a long simmering vendetta against one of the characters in this one.
Morgan and Lance work together great per usual. I think what I love about this couple is that they actually talk to each other (gasp!) I know. But seriously. Most romance books mess this up a lot with partners keeping things from each other and trying to protect each other. Lance knows Morgan can take care of herself. The suspense part still makes up most of this book with Lance trying do what he can to protect a kid from his skating classes. And then you toss in Sharp reaching out to Olivia for help (which leads to some danger for both of them).
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I requested this immediately when I saw it, since I am up to date with the Morgan Dane series . It is on Kindle Unlimited, with the audio version also. Secrets Never Die is another new and dangerous case with children in the crosshairs as our team is still recovering.
Sharp, Morgan, and Lance continue to outwit and intelligently investigate better than the law enforcement. They have a better rapport with witnesses and victims with their compassionate, quick minds. The pace was brutal as they tried to save the innocent. The area is having difficulty finding a new sheriff who is qualified and capable.
I enjoyed their personal developments also. They are putting an addition on the house, working on parenting, recovering from the flu, and trying to plan their wedding. Sharp is struggling to recover. He is also trying to define his feelings about Olivia.
I love these stories so much! Now I have to wait for Save Your Breath (September). In the meantime, I can go back for the earlier Scarlett Falls series, set in this world.
Narration: Cris Dukehart is the expected voice here for me. The voices for males and females are comfortable, with distinct ones for different characters. I was able to enjoy the performance at 1.5x speed.

When sixteen-year-old Evan Meade comes home two hours past his curfew, he figures he's going to be in big trouble with his stepfather, Paul Knox. Instead, he finds a man putting a bullet in Paul's head. Evan flees with the killer on his heels. Private Investigator Lance Kruger receives a call from Evan's mother, desperate for Lance to find her missing son. Lance, along with Defense Attorney Morgan Dane, knows the police believe that Evan killed his stepfather. They want to find Evan before the killer finds him.
This is another excellent addition to the Morgan Dane series. As usual in this series, the cops have made up their minds about the situation. They believe Evan killed his stepfather and was injured fleeing the scene. It's up to Lance and Morgan with the help of Lincoln Sharp, to figure out exactly what happened. Another unexpected murder leads Lance to believe that the killer is hunting for Evan.
This story was fast paced and believable. Many secrets come to light that help us figure out who is behind the murders. I enjoyed this story very much. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
This was another great installment from Morgan Dane’s Series. I love the way Melinda Leigh develope every one of her stories. All the details of Morgan’s cases and life situations are impressive.
In Secrets Never Die we continue the life of Lawyer Morgan and PI’s Lance Kruger and Lincoln Sharp. Another unexpected murder takes this team to action. This one been more close to Lance’s heart. While dealing with all the work drama and constant annoyance from the sheriffs department, we get to have more of the daily life of Morgan and Lance. I love this duo. They are an incredible team in and out of work.
Even though I lovethis book and pretty fast paced I felt that was missing some of the intensity from previous books. That said I still can’t wait to have the next book of this series.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
This fifth book in Melinda Leigh’s series about defence attorney Morgan Dane, her partner – PI Lance Kruger – and his boss and their mutual friend Lincoln Sharp, focuses on a tautly written mystery plot involving a murder and a missing teen while also taking an insightful look at the challenges of parenting young children and finding a practicable work-life balance.
When Secrets Never Die opens, we meet sixteen-year-old Evan Meade as he’s returning home – later than he should be – from an evening out with a friend. He’s surprised to see there are no lights on inside the house; his mother, a nurse, is still at work and his stepfather, Paul, a retired sheriff’s deputy, always leaves a light on for her – but the place is in total darkness. Cautiously – and still feeling guilty for being out late and having ignored Paul’s concerned texts earlier – Evan is making his way through the house when he hears a loud pop he thinks must be a gunshot. He stands in the doorway of the den, frozen in terror at the sight of Paul lying on the floor, covered in blood, as a large man carrying a gun stands over him and shoots him again, this time between the eyes, execution style. As Evan watches, horrified, he sees the man is wearing a gold badge clipped to his belt and he’s wearing gloves – is he a cop? After that final shot, the killer’s eyes fix on Evan – who turns and starts running for his life.
Morgan and Lance have had a particularly difficult and exhausting few days. Morgan’s three daughters – all aged six and under – have been ill which has meant disturbed nights for both of them (something I’m sure all parents will be able to identify with!) and they’re both running on empty when Lance gets a call in the early hours from Tina, Evan’s mother, who tells him she returned from work to find her husband shot dead and her son missing. Lance, an ex-cop turned PI, also coaches a hockey team of at-risk youths, which is how he knows both mother and son. He and Morgan think it’s a bit strange that Tina has called them before dialling 911, but they nonetheless head over to the house, arriving at the scene before the County Sheriff and his team, which gives them a chance to look over the house for evidence before they’re told to butt out.
When Sheriff Colgate does arrive, it’s clear he’s not pleased to see Morgan and Lance already there, but accepts their explanations that they’re friends of the family and allows them to remain while he and his team start documenting the crime scene. The discovery of blood on the handle of the back door and on the cell phone they find on the other side of the back fence indicates that Evan must be injured, although it’s impossible to tell how badly.
But it rapidly becomes clear to Morgan and Lance that there are things the sheriff isn’t telling them, and that he is pursuing his own agenda. They know Evan is innocent of the murder of his stepfather but with him still missing, his past history of being in trouble with the law and evidence pointing to his relationship with Paul having been an acrimonious one, the difficulty is going to lie in proving it.
Long buried secrets, police corruption, a crimelord recently released from prison… author Melinda Leigh skilfully interweaves her various plotlines and clues into a tightly-written, fast-paced mystery that credibly combines the suspense elements with a look at the day-to-day difficulties of parenting young children alongside having a demanding and sometimes dangerous job. Morgan and Lance are engaged now – although Morgan has become a little skittish and has so far refused to set a date – but there’s no big melodrama involved, and they act like sensible, mature adults and talk things through so that by the end of the book, things are back on track. There’s only a whiff of romance in this one, though, which is provided by Lance’s boss, Sharp, whose reluctant crush on reporter Olivia Cruz (who helped out with the investigation in the previous book, What I’ve Done) hasn’t abated. I always like a romance between older protagonists (Sharp is fifty-three, Olivia is in her forties) and Olivia is a great addition to the cast; she’s funny, she’s clever, she’s vivacious, and she’s got Sharp’s number – plus, I can never resist characters who lob quotes from The Princess Bride at each other ;). Olivia proves herself to be one tough cookie when she and Sharp find themselves in a perilous situation when they follow up on a new lead – and I hope to see more of her in the next book.
This novel works perfectly well as a standalone, although one of the real strengths of the series is the closely knit ‘family’ of characters the author has built up around Morgan, all of whom have important parts to play in her life and the stories. It’s not necessary to have read the previous books in order to enjoy this (I’m still working my way through them), but doing so will definitely provide a little more insight into the various characters and their relationships. Secrets Never Die is an intriguing mystery that grabs the attention from the opening chapter and keeps you turning the pages through the twists, turns and life-or-death situations until the very end.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Defence attorney Morgan Dane and her fiancée PI Lance Kruger tackle a new case in Secrets Never Die. Evan, a teenage boy with a troubled past is on the run after returning home and to find his step-father being murdered. By a man with a police badge. Now Evan is a fugitive with no one to turn to. In the meantime, Lance and Morgan are working on finding Evan and solving the case, especially when Evan becomes the number one and only suspect. This is one of my favourite mystery series, each book manages to tick all my boxes. It has a great cast of characters with a strong leading heroine; it has a little romance and finally it has a mystery that keeps you hooked into the story. Secrets Never Die is no different and I quickly devoured this book.Melinda Leigh knows exactly how to craft a good mystery and I enjoyed reading this on unravel. As the title of the books suggests there were secrets to expose that led the book in some interesting directions. Although I wouldn’t say it kept me guessing to the end, it didn’t mean this book wasn’t exciting. There were gripping and dangerous tense moments that had me glued to the page. But, it isn’t just the mystery that has me addicted to this series, Leigh also incorporates the interpersonal relationships of all the characters. The family life and romance of Morgan, Lance and a few other characters are important and lends this series a sense of warmth. Although this book rates at about a zero on the heat level, love is very much present throughout this book, and series. If you are looking for an mystery that's easy to dive into and has a little romance, then you need to give this book and series a try.

"Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review" “Secrets Never Die” is a fast-paced and well written thriller with the incredible complex characters who have been captivating us since the first book of the Morgan Dane series. Familiarity and empathy with the central characters – Morgan, Dane, Sharp, and their extended family and friends - are strong elements in Melinda Leigh’s series, drawing the reader into the story, but the new characters in this story are so compelling: the brave, slightly broken young man (Ethan) and his fight for survival; his stepfather, a retired cop (Paul), a victim (whom I wished would live, because the author painted such an arresting human portrait of him). Leigh’s talent in making her characters believable and likeable is immense, as is her writing about the subtleties of the characters’ personalities and relationships. It’s always a pleasure to meet again Morgan and Lance and their relatives and relations. It was a special delight to meet again tough and vulnerable Lincoln Sharp – from the fittest person to a still convalescent recovering from severe wounds and surgery. It was fun to watch him fighting his attraction to feisty journalist Olivia Cruz (“He found her attractive and he didn’t like it. Not at all”). I just wish this plotline will continue in the future. I'm grateful to the publisher, Montlake Romance, and NetGalley for providing a free copy
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Secrets Never Die is the 5th book in Leigh's Morgan Dane series. Leigh's central characters Morgan, Lance, Sharp, and their family and friends are like family you look forward to reconnecting with. In this book, we also meet Ethan, a player on Lance's hockey team, his mother Tina and girlfriend Rylee. Tina's husband and Ethan's stepfather, Paul, is murdered in their home on a night that Ethan misses his curfew. Ethan becomes the prime suspect, and Morgan and Lance must work against time and the elements to prove his innocence and discover who the real killer is. Leigh's ability to develop likable and genuine characters drives the reader into the book. Lance's love for Morgan's daughters and his developing role as step-dad, juggling sick children, family and work challenges make the reader root for his success. We also see more of Lincoln Sharp in this story and he becomes more of a real character than just the healthy food and smoothie pusher of the last couple of books. I really enjoy this series and each subsequent book seems better than the previous ones. A great read!
Lance now lives with Morgan and her family. They are awakened in the wee hours of the morning by the mother of one of Lance's at risk kids on the hockey team he coaches. Her husband is dead and her son is missing.
Sharp is still recovering from his injuries. He continues to frown at Morgan's coffee and donuts while pushing his healthy lifestyle on her. It's amusing. Watching him dance around Olivia is entertaining. I really like her for him. She is a strong female character, which Leigh is good at writing. I'm looking forward to the development of their relationship.
While I love that Morgan and Lance are a solid, established, mature, strong couple, I missed the romance and heat of earlier books. I get that the progression of their relationship is necessary, but it just seems that it progressed to domesticity a little too quick for me.
This is another solid read. The mystery is engaging. I always look forward to the next book when the one I'm reading ends.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.
I'm totally hooked in this series! It's suspenseful until the very end. Melinda Leigh done amazing job creating and developing those fabulous characters. I loved to see how their relationship grows along the investigation of another murder that keeps you guessing, questioning and not trusting anyone. Can't wait for the next book of series looking forward to see what author has up to their sleeve for Morgan, Lance, Sharp and Olivia!
This author is an automatic buy for me. I have all her books. They are great. This latest installment in the Morgan Dane series is no exception. Murder, mystery, romantic suspense. Lots of tense moments. I never know what to expect. Can't wait for the next one!
4/5 ⭐️ Well this got complicated hella fast, but it was a fun ride going along with the book and trying to figure out who the murderer was, and I totally failed at it. As always I love the two MCs.
A teen boy comes home to a nightmare and is now on the run as a murder suspect. Intrepid Morgan and stalwart Lance believe in his innocence and go on the hunt for the true killer. The blend of pulse-pounding suspense, family, and romance are as addicting as ever in this latest Morgan Dane read by lights out series narrated, Cris Dukehart.
Secrets Never Die is book five in in a series of thrilling romantic suspenses that work best read in order for the series long relationship development between Morgan and Lance though each book gives the reader/listener a new murder case each time.
Evan is a teenager caught as a pawn in his birth dad's malicious power play against his ex which causes Evan to turn that anger on the one person who doesn't deserve it, his step-dad. Now, that kind, patient man is dead and Evan saw his killer. Evan is on the run for his life, gunshot wound, and the knowledge that someone with a badge shot his step dad.
Lance is Evan's ice hockey coach and he knows Evan could never do this crime. Morgan believes in Lance's instincts as does Sharp so they work together to solve the murder. They know time is not on their side and the killer has crossed the path of their investigation more than once while they discover there are more secrets from Evan's family that might have a bearing on the situation.
Meanwhile, Morgan won't set a date for the wedding and knows she is disappointing Lance by refusing to even make any wedding plans. She didn't realize that she even had these hangups, but knows she better get herself sorted before she loses the best thing in her life by pushing him away.
This story starts off with a heart-pounding first scene and then plunges steadily into the case. It never really lets up though there are slices of family life with Lance, Morgan and the girls along with introspective moments with their relationship. The suspense grew with the scenes from Evan's point of view sprinkled in with the others. As with all these books, the killer is smart and motivated with no hesitation to strike out with torture or murder.
This was one of those suspenses that had some twists that had to be revealed before there was even a chance at getting to the solution. The viable suspects never felt right to me. I only grasped a small bit of the true answer even in the end. The big scene came fast and furious which I thought was a genius stroke.
As always, Cris Dukehart, was sensational as narrator and brought the book to vivid life. I love how she voices Morgan and the others. Dramatic scenes are given their due without overacting with her voice. She brings out all the feels from the ahhhs when Lance is with those little girls to Morgan and Lance in danger when facing down a person wielding a gun.
In summary, it was fabulous and over too soon. Thank goodness, the next release is not a whole year away. I am utterly addicted to Morgan Dane and Cris Dukehart. Those who enjoy thrilling romantic suspense are the target group.
My thanks to Brilliance Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
