➽ Take all the scrumptious entertainingness of books 1, 2 and 3 in this series, and then add:
① Deals with supposedly dead, psychopathic neuromancers.
② Most delicious blood magic *waves at KD*
③ Beheading arch-demons as a hobby. Ah, that warm, joyful feeling you get when severing little heads! There’s nothing quite like it, if you ask me.
So happy you agree with me, H! Oh, by the way, meet Herbert, my neighbour. He kinda sorta likes it when limbs and appendages get chopped off and stuff. He really is a lovely sort of um, chum.
④ Treacherous bastards and villainous mages and screeching bitches, oh my!
⑤ Razor chain whips, aka the first item on my 2019 Christmas wishlist.
⑥ The most notorious madman since the Nazis.
Looks harmless enough, doesn’t he? Yeah, the guy’s cunningly deceptive like that.
⑦ Suspiciously suspicious old-timey miner wannabes, complete with weathered skin, long scraggly beards, and suspenders over grimy shirts. Sexey.
⑧ Splotchy skin and boiling blisters, yum!
⑨ Zombies as ventriloquist dummies, aka the second item on my 2019 Christmas wishlist.
⑩ It’s final smackdown time, you bloody shrimping assholes moderately contemptible persons of somewhat disputable morals! Woohoo and stuff!
Shake it all and mix it all and stir it all and whisk it all, and what do you get? Well, something kinda sorta like this:
➽ Nefarious Last Words (NLW™): no, this series will not win the Pulitzer Prize. Neither will it be awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature (then again, who knows)? But it is fun as fish AND enjoyable as shrimp AND fast-paced AND not infected with the deadly Stupidly Stupid Highly Flammable Ground-Breaking UF Crap Virus (SSHFGBUCV™) AND the MC is female and youngish but not a complete harebrained nitwit (cross my black withered heart and hope to slaughter puny humans and stuff). Ergo: if a mindless, rollicking good time looking for you are, then read this boisterous romp of a blessedly short, completed series you must. You are most welcome and stuff.
★ ★ 1/2 (rounded up) This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader. --- Faith has a lot to wrap up in this conclusion to her Ella Gray series. There's the re-rescue of Ella's brother, the deal with her magic, the completion of her partner's storyline, the situation with her coven (especially the leader of it), her roommate's romantic situation, and a few strings—Faith even throws in a new romantic interest for Ella.
And, well, she does wrap it all up. Most of it felt rushed, like she was going to get it all wrapped up in X number of pages come Hades or high-water. Some of it was too convenient. Some of it was fitting. Some was tragic. All of it was hurried.
I really did enjoy the dragon character and all we learned about him.
I wish that Faith had turned this into an ongoing series with a focus on the Supernatural Crimes while finding a way to resolve the other storylines—I enjoyed those characters and thought that whole thing had a lot more life in it. She could've done that and even kept the coven in the background. But...that's just me.
This series started strong and promising, and then it petered out. I'm glad I got to see how someone would use Boise in an Urban Fantasy, but was disappointed in the end. The coworker who turned me on to the series disagrees with my overall take on it, she's probably in the majority.
This was better than the third book but I'm still kind of meh on this series overall and looking back really wish I hadn't read past the first one. It started off strong but by the end I was just annoyed with all the characters and all the problems seemed to be solved via deus ex machina so it's like there weren't even any stakes. Also I had to roll my eyes at her being so upset about Rogen in this book. I mean I'm not 100% sure on the timeline but it seemed they knew each other for like a month and were together romantically for maybe a week or so and now she's acting like he was her ~one true love~ or something. Also I really don't like the narrator the audio books in this series but unfortunately it was the only way I could get ahold of them. I guess at least it was fairly short and we got a decent amount of closure here - although it was far too ~happily ever after~ for me personally.
Well, things went about as well as can be expected. Having lost Damien to the Mages, Rogan to the in between, and Evan to Damien, Ella turns to the coven to help her save her brother. When the Mages plan a coup that really feels like Ella has no way to win, she is lucky to still have some friends on her side, and finally learns that she can't actually do it all by herself.
She is so impetus that half the time, some of the things that befall her are of her own doing. On the one hand, I can understand sacrificing the one for the many. On the other hand, it is her family and there is an alternative. Things may not turn out perfect, but then they aren't now nor were they before the rips. Ella just needs to work on those people skills and a little planning if she wants to succeed.
Things do actually work out, but I do still miss Rogan and Damien and wish things could have worked out with them still around.
What kind of ending was that? It felt cheap. However this was a pleasant surprise and a wild ride to boot. I was thoroughly impressed with how everything got wrapped up in a nice and tidy bow and loads of dangling strings were put neatly in place. Did it fit perfectly or even logically? Nope, but I honestly didn’t really care too much. I couldn’t put this down and looking back this entire series could’ve just been 2 books. Like the whole Johnny thing was a stupid footnote and what was the deal with still not learning any real details about Damien? Did Ella really need a love interest? What was the point of the underworld council thing? Were we gonna circle back to it or not? Oh well. All in all you could’ve read this book and not even bothered with the others to comprehend all that was said and done....
*crack!* and it’s a home run, 4/4, another wonderful story. I loved how she went out with several guys over the corse of the book, not just one true love, and the real centerpiece of the series was the sweet friendships, eeee. I love how she went from a demon hunter beat cop to a powerful mage! And how she kept discovering new kinds of magic. Loki was fantastic, haven’t loved a dog so much since Grave Witch’s Chinese crested, but I must point out that I was promised a gargoyle pet as well and barely got one! Humph.

This whole series drew me in from the very beginning. Loved the story line. The only thing that I would change is the Nazi reference in these books. There are many people in history that were responsible for thousands of deaths. I don't know why only Germans are getting a bad rep. Check out Stalin, Lenin, Mussolini, and Kim Jong Un...just to name a few. Otherwise this series is kicking.
Wow, a perfect story with the perfect outcome. Know who your friends are and watch your enemies closely. Especially when the enemies do not care about human life. Ella is on the hunt to find her brother and save him from being a sacrifice. Its not easy when your wanted and your face is plastered all over the place. Not easy when your friend and partner is the one doing the sacrifice. But, Ella will stop at nothing to rescue her brother, even when it means she may die.
I picked up this book in the Nook store on my tablet because I had to know how everything turned out. My personal review of the book is as follows:
In my personal opinion the plot felt very rushed and the ending felt very tied up too neatly in my personal opinion. I can't really explain why since it would give away the entire plot line for the previous books. Overall I personally rate this book a 3 and half out of 10.
Unreached potential. It could have been good, but all the threads were dropped. I found the main character to be mean and reckless, and I found the magic to be pedantic. I followed through to the end hoping to be told what made her brother so special but never got the payoff. Was it worth the full 4 books? Meh. Maybe. Not for me.
The Ella Grey series is my favorite in this genre. The story is fast and furious with a talented and powerful Ella doing battle and working with all the different species of Fae.
Well this final book in the series is a corker. Everything seems such a mess at the start of things and ends up all sorted but the way they get there is not what I expected.
This really is a great book. The series is fantastic. Read it!
The creativity and originality of the first two books is long lost. This is 80 percent taking the required steps to get to the end, 5 percent for the somewhat interesting ending, and 15 percent of recapping...
Amazing series.A very emotional ,high action read.Great story plot and the characters in this are very unique.Read this till the end and couldn't stop.Check this author's work out!
I'm a little upset with this final installment. The big ending was poof done and over with and then it's 5 months later. I had also enjoyed the narrator the first 3 books, but this one it seemed like she ended every sentence with a weird little lilt and overly husky.
I have to say it was a bit disappointing.. Ella acted to impulse and immature, by her fault, she lost her brother the first time and got her sent trapped..I have to say that I was skipping pages as it wasn't that good book as the first one..at least it had happy ending
