Name: USS Omega Deep Cost: 8 billion dollars Class: Experimental Noise Emissions: Undetectable by current sound monitoring capabilities Current Status: Unknown. Last contact 96 days ago. Presumed sunk. 192 souls lost.
The US Navy’s most advanced nuclear attack submarine, the USS Omega Deep was the first to disappear.
It was followed swiftly by the loss of the Russian spy vessel Yalta, and then the Feng Jian, a Chinese Aircraft Carrier.
Sam Reilly and his unique team of troubleshooters are requested at the express order of the President of the United States of America to locate the Omega Deep and determine the cause of these unexplained tragedies, before they lead to World War III.
Christopher Cartwright writes spellbinding mysteries and suspense novels. Often with a backdrop of ocean adventure. Born in 1983, he has a background as a paramedic, and is an avid sailor and SCUBA diver.
He holds degrees in paramedics, nursing and emergency management.
Chris currently lives in Sydney with his wife and two children.
Imagine a naval thriller and set it in Mayberry and you have Omega Deep. Great start and then the slow down. Sam and Tom have this Leave it to Beaver, pseudo-father/son relationship. I was waiting for a tearful Sam to say, "Tom, I am proud you." That was not too terribly annoying. Some of the science was not quite right. I was bothered by the Marines in their "Charlie Deltas." As a Marine Corps veteran, I would like to ask, what are Charlie Deltas?
I did enjoy the story and that makes me interested in trying another Sam Reilly story and see how he made to the twelfth novel.
Omega Deep by Christopher Cartwright and narrated by David Gilmore is an Audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I absolutely love these books. I love this book for the technology that is discussed in it. Something that DARPA has had for some time but is little known. I personally think it was used to simulate the planes in 9/11. I guess that's why I really got into this . Of course the great story, characters, plot, suspense, action, and adventure had plenty to do with it too, lol! These are always exciting! The narration is always spot on too! Great job guys!!!
Another excellent adventure with Sam and Tom, couldn't put the book down once I'd started to read it. very naughty of you Christopher to keep us guessing what's coming next. cannot wait for book 13 to find out what Sam has to face. brilliant story, you just keep getting better Christopher, Keep them coming.
Another great sam reilly novel. Fast and exciting as always. If you're a fan of Hunt for red October this one will appeal to you becuase of all the submarine technology and such
Very good fun. I'd recommend it to people who are keen on books by clive cussler or simmilar authors in the genre
This book had some of the highest stakes of any in the series so far! It was interesting, relevant to the main crew, and a fun game of cat and mouse, from the cat’s perspective for once! Definitely a fun and quick read and fits well in the series!
I love this series. I think they could use a a lot of editing, less details about ships, weaponry, cars, etc. and more emphasis on the intense scenes. Many times throughout the series, I find myself feeling nervous, claustrophobic, in suspense, and flipping pages to get to the next scenes, which I enjoy a lot. Those bits that draw on about specific details, brand names, or mechanics take me out of the action sometimes.
I do also question if there are enough edits to paraphrase information about locations found online. I love that in this series, I find myself googling places I’ve never heard of, and I often find the travel to be the most immersive element. However, when I do a search online to look up a place and get a visual while reading, I often come across a very very similarly written article to the books.
Two other issues: there is an overarching plot that is the most interesting bit, but in the later books, some of the original details don’t seem to add up anymore. I may not be far enough to see it come together, so take that with a grain of salt. And, the descriptions of female characters can be a little jarring. Every woman seems to be fit, with lithe muscles and perfect teeth and a Lara Croft personality. Even more bookish, older, or one-off female characters are subject to this brush over. I enjoy the individuality of each one’s backstories, but I think some variety in appearance, or at least better initial descriptions than their…physical attributes…would be appreciated, too!
All of that being said, I’ve almost caught up to the currently published book and I have no intention of stopping the series. I loved the Uncharted games, and this reminds me heavily of that style. Action, adventure, thrilling discoveries, and an overarching plot which is generally well thought out.
Christopher Cartwright really knows how to put the “thrill” in “thriller”. This novel opens with a bang as we watch the submarine of the title get into a most unusual problem six weeks before the rest of the novel begins. My pulse was pounding by the end of the epilogue and I really wish the author would have taken us a few pages further into the action—but then, if he had, there really wouldn’t have been a mystery for us to work through for the rest of the book.
That mystery comes in the form of two different underwater wrecks—an airplane and a cargo ship that we, the reader, quickly come to think have to be connected. Cartwright presents a mixture of technical problems accessing the wrecks, good old fashioned mystery, and sudden pulse-pounding action. It’s a lot of fun to read and things only get more exciting as our heroes, Sam and Tom, get interested in locating the submarine that we followed into danger in the epilogue.
A lot of this novel is putting pieces in place that will clearly be important to later books in the series, but that didn’t take away from the excitement as I listened to this book for the first time. (I have not read any other works by this author.) When they finally figure out what happened to the Omega Deep and go after it, you’ll be on the edge of your seat trying to figure out how everyone will survive. If you like a fast-paced, action-packed adventure, you ought to give Omega Deep a try.
I received this book from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting one. Mostly because I’m not quite sure who the intended audience is, middle schoolers with an interest in military adventure stories? For me, it worked because it features two of my favorite things, submarines and container ships, but I’m not sure that’s a very large demographic.
The writing about military tech and ships is enjoyable, but the characters and dialogue are simplistic and the effect is rather unrealistically wholesome. There isn’t much violence or adult language and while I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing, I honestly laughed out loud when the submarine is freed from the bottom of the sea and everyone gleefully shouts “Hooray!” The dialogue was just a bit too precious for me. I do appreciate how respectfully the author treated the female characters though, the lack of sexism was nice.
I’m sure part of the issue is how the book was narrated. While the narration quality was good, the narrator’s voice and tone choices were not the direction I would have gone in. But the book was easy to listen to while I was doing other things, so that does count for something.
Overall, I would equate this story to a fun Scooby Doo mystery romp through the oceans with some neat naval technology and inoffensive characters.
This one got back to the original storyline but the ending fell quite short like a chapter was left out it made a judge jump from one story plot point to almost a new story with no fill in and they are starting to have cliffhangers that aren't always picked up in the next book. Previously even though the stories were connected, they were also stand alone stories, the last are disconnected at times with too many dangling threads and now at least the second book with a cliffhanger, disappointing.
Sam just gets better and better. He is officially one of my favorite characters. I love how he always thinks outside the box and this story shows him at his best. His interactions with the Secretary of Defense have to be some of the best. Sam shows no fear of her power, lies easily to her, and does the right thing always. I wish more real humans operated that way.
This book kept me up all night last night. I had to read to the end! And now can’t wait to read the next adventure.
Omega Deep, my twelfth read from author Christopher Cartwright & the twelfth book in the highly entertaining Sam Reilly series. Well-written thriller with captivating & well-developed main characters. Reminds me of Dan Brown’s writing. These books have been a rollicking adventure & I’ll be reading more by this author as I already own more books in the series and am looking for sales to buy more yet! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Heck of an exciting story! Cartwright has outdone himself! Nothing like a lost state of the art submarine and our intrepid heroes. Lots of potential bad guys too. Although this is Book 12 and reflects much of the previous stories, there are new twists and many loose ends come together. Enjoyed the heck out of this book. If you appreciate technical detail, this one is for you!
My first Christopher Cartwright novel. I did not realize this was a series and the book worked well as a stand alone adventure. Knowing a bit a bout submarines I was impressed with his accuracy of the inner workings and the workings of a good crew. I liked all the technical aspects he brought into the narrative without getting bogged down. A good James Bond/Johnny Quest/Iron Man sort of espionage adventure.
I have previously concentrated on other writers, but was pleased i moved to another track. A compelling book, i will be looking carefully at this author.
I just wanted to keep on reading. The author leads clearly forward. Although it is clear there is an end in view, it is not revealed too early. I have been left wanting to know more.
A few continuity errors in the book, that make me think the author has just cut and pasted from other stories... Anyway, this time Sam Reilly is hunting a missing submarine. Think of "Hunt for Red October" and you aren't too far off the mark.
A fun read, but I think I will take a break from Mr Reilly for a bit.
It was a nice, fun, light reading story. First read of a Sam Reilly book and this author. The story ling was reminiscent of The Hunt for Red October but not as exciting or interesting. Thought the ending was a silly and only meant for the reader to buy the next book and several questions regarding this story line were never answered.
Sam and Tom manage to find trouble with the master builders attempting to recover the blackbody material. Of course, the world is temporarily saved; but not before some gripping exploits and with the help of an unexpected addition to the crew of the Maria Helena. Fun reading in book 12 of this series
I just discovered the Sam Reilly series- and I have been binge reading! The series is amazing, the details are so well developed and so are the characters. It seems like it could be true which makes this one of the best science fiction thrillers around. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
Another great Sam Reilly adventure! Tons of action, and lots of twists and turns! In this installment strange things happen to seafaring ships. If you’ve been following the series, you’ll know the Master Builders are involved. Sooo…I won’t spoil the rest!
Not the grade I would give this novel. It is a fast paced, international thriller peppered with loads of science fiction and fact. A fun story that pushes the boundaries of Sam and Tom’s capabilities.
This is a very enjoyable addition to the series, one that takes the reader auntie an almost exclusively underwater world. The Master Builders of course are there and their plans are underway.
Read as audiobook. Enjoyed a good bit of it, but the plot twist at the end just seemed silly to me. But this was also the first of these books I have read, so I most certainly missed some key things those have read the entire series did not miss. Thought the ending overall was quite weak.
I was previously unfamiliar with the Sam Reilly novels. This was interesting action-filled light reading. It is not really about the Omega Deep itself but actually about the search for it. I will probably read more in the series especially since this ends abruptly with significant cliffhanger.
I found the first chapters had too much information about machines and their used etc. Once the story got into it's stride it became much more interesting and exciting.I really liked the ending can't wait for the next in series.Recommended
I've read 8 books in the series but this was my least favorite so far. Book lagged with nonessential information but picked up in the end. Ending was rushed but ended with totally non believable delve into next book which makes you want to buy #13.
Well written story, well researched information about the submarine . Mr. Cartwright keeps the reader on a roller coaster ride with there fight with the Ancients. Each book leads to the next one until the conclusion is a war with the human's.
I've come to know the characters quite well after reading several books & I can honestly say the writer never ceases to throw me a curve. I was 60% into the book & had to finish. You won't be disappointed.
