C.D. Reiss

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping a single cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

I usually don’t read books under 100 pages and I hardly read prequels! Don’t ask me why, because I myself, don’t know the answer yet! I read the first two books of the series and at the end of book two, the author had told to read the prequel before starting book three. So here I am, read it! This one was about how Greyson and Caden met each other. But since I had read the two books, I knew about it! So I don’t know why we should read this one, maybe when I read book three I will find out!?! Told in single POV, 1st person. It’s the prequel to "The Edge" series. Overall, it was a good read and hope you like it as well!

Cutting Edge is the prequel to The Edge series. This short novella is how Greyson and Caden met while being stationed in Iraq. CD Reiss captures the war scene with a haunting authenticity especially how trauma and exhaustion affects the mind and body. That’s how Major Greyson comes in to the picture. As a psychiatrist she has to monitor the surgeons while operating on casualties. Captain Caden St. John who’s a surgeon makes an immediate impression on Greyson and vice versa.

I’ve already read book 1 - Rough Edge so it was a great addition to the series. Some puzzle pieces fell into place. Also their chemistry is undeniable. So much heat. Cutting Edge is not necessary to read but I highly recommend it.

From the first moment reading this prequel, I was taken to a place no one should ever have to go...To an active war zone. Reiss has the ability to transport you anywhere she deems fit and with this book we are there when Greyson and Caden first meet.

Nothing is the usual. Even the most "everyday occurrence" isn't because these people are dealing with the immediacy of incoming wounded needing repair.

Through this book we are given a window of days critical to who these people are on their own and with each other. How they connect and what other factors play around them.

Reiss captured everything...
The weight in the air, the windows of the sky through Caden's eyes...
And if you pay attention, hints of what is to come and what is hidden...all there in plain sight.

For that is her sly talent... she gives you everything without you even knowing it until it smacks you in the face...Like falling in love.

This is the prequel to Rough Edge. I read Rough Edge first, then this...It works either way. The important thing is to read this NOW...and the series as it is released.

This is the prequel and is best read somewhere in between books 1-3. The author suggests to absolutely read it before the third book! So, that’s what I did and I am glad that I did! It offered me insight and more details into how Greyson and Caden met during their time in the war. Yes I knew some of the how they met already but this gave me the full scene and what they were feeling during that time.

Once again I was captivated by both Greyson and Caden, and I’m dying to get to the next read!

“Awake you that sleep” - Ephesians 5:14

“ ‘I don’t believe in the Universe with a capital U, and I don’t believe in God. I believe in brain signals and blood. But now? I’m willing to think maybe I’m wrong about everything. This is what it comes down to. You expanded my view of the universe. I don’t know what to do with that. I’m not saying I believe in fate or karma or ‘meant to be’ now, but my thinking got bigger because of you. I feel woken up… I feel ignorant and ordinary but awake.’” – Caden

Oh…the intricacy and depth of this Prequel which sets the stage for the epic to come!!! I had the distinct pleasure of reading Rough Edge first which left me breathless almost clinging to life it is that good. Now this (short in comparison) Prequel, Cutting Edge sucked me back into a story which is a love story that has tensions pulling it from the inside with the deep seated psychological wounds and issues of both lovers…Caden and Greyson, as well as, pushing up against it with dark motives from shady characters and (I’ll say it) perhaps the twisted evil agendas of the powerful in our society. Don’t let me forget to tell you that it is “F-hot”!!! Seriously dripping, melting, turning “sand into glass” hot!!!

You could sit back, read and enjoy the unfolding of a great, erotic romantic suspense epic that “The Edge” is shaping up to be…or…you could wake up and listen to the subtle touches this master author writes into her story.

“The sky was crystalline blue, heavy and thick, the only pure thing in a messy world. It connected all of us equally under its sapphire bowl.”
“…his fucking eyes were the color of the bowl that connected all of us.”
“The eternal sky was captured in his eyes, deadly and comforting, alive with purpose.”
“I could never forget the love in them.”

Each of the above quotes was taken from different passages of Cutting Edge. When you read actively and attuned to the words… you begin to see the beauty, intelligence, heart and perhaps a glimpse of the author’s soul.

Cutting Edge takes place entirely in a forward Combat Support Hospital in Iraq. Greyson a true soldier at heart…a lifer... is a US Army Psychiatrist tasked to keep the surgeons and medical staff functioning at their maximum capacity to handle the crush of incoming wounded from a forward area offensive action. Caden is the volunteer US Army trauma surgeon who gave up a lucrative civilian practice to do his part after 911. He is exceedingly capable and almost demonic in his drive to stay scrubbed up and in surgery days upon end, dealing with devastating injury after injury. The initial meeting and chemistry between these two is mesmerizing!!!

I also hear a love letter in Cutting Edge to those who have borne the battle and the inescapable scars it leaves on their psyche. Compounding these wounds is the difficulty for a strong battle-tested soldier to admit their unseen wounds…to admit to any weakness. I hear acknowledgement of the unique struggle of woman to earn the equal privilege to sacrifice their blood and soul for that which a soldier is commanded to do? I hear the whispered questions in the heart of those who lost a leg, an arm, a buddy, their mind … “Why?” I hear the soldier who believed that the military was the way to educate their mind earning the access to advanced education still hoping they will still have a mind to educate after the battle is done. I hear the burden the military family bears and the unique damage(?) to the psyche of a child when their warrior parent(s) speak of the carnage they witnessed on the battlefield. I hear an ode to the bravery and self-sacrifice of the poor and middle class who always have been asked in large majority to serve or who volunteer to serve. Their sacrifice never truly or fully appreciated by those who would wage war without reservation for less than noble reasons and not for the ideals we hold true.

I also hear in the very name Caden St. John that this is going to be one “hell” of a love story…pun intended. Cutting Edge sets the stage, gives you a delicious nibble and cuts close to the heart of what’s to come on the edge as Cayden had to precisely wield his scalpel in surgery. It’s an invitation and by God right now, it’s free! “Awake” my friends!!! How can you resist? How can anyone resist?

Genre: Erotic Romance
Type: Book 0.5 of 4 from The Edge series
POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

Captain Caden St. John, a surgeon and Major Greyson Frazier, a psychiatrist met in the warzone while being deployed in Iraq. Their short encounter in tumultuous situation led to an intense relationship neither of them prepared to face.

My body was strong enough to resist, but my heart was weak.

I like the story overall especially the war scenes. I've always love seeing how people would rise or crumble in desperate position. However, I feel like I didn't learn anything new much.

“You came off the Chinook like you could conquer the Republican Army all by yourself. So fucking sexy. All I wanted to do was conquer you.”

I read this book after book 2 but the sequence didn't matter because a lot of the same scenes were repeated. The role of one character was more clear here and that was all that's new. I wanted to know more of one character's trauma and what happened to the other character when a new path was chosen.

“I have to be careful with you"
“Why?”
“You don’t know your own limits.”

Worth every penny! Oh, and I got it for free!! So definitely worth it then :P

Great writing. Great military descriptions. Hard core hero (see my notes). In love with him! At least from this small taste of him. Heroine is a good match, but not sure I'd ever be friends with her. They're both alpha characters and made for each other. Hard to relate to the h because of that.

Good enough for me to buy the series most likely, so hurray! I found something to sink my teeth into finally! This will last me about a day or two, but thankfully I'm starting a buddy read next so I'll get my good books fix...

Highly recommend!

This was a great peak into how the main characters met and started their whirlwind relationship while overseas. I did read book 1 and 2 before I even knew there was this novella. In a way, I'm glad I didn't read this first. I liked the mystery surrounding these two when I began the series. The author did state on her Facebook page that you will want to read this before you read book 3.

This novella prequel goes back in time to when Captain Caden St. John and Major Greyson Frazier meet during their deployments. Volunteering as a surgeon after 9/11, Caden’s motives are personal but his dedication and focus to healing is boundless. Reared in a military family, Greyson knows the drill but it being around Caden starts to change her long-term outlook.

“I want the taste of your cunt on my fingers when you leave.” Fly open, pants halfway down my ass, I was already wet for him. “I want you to be sore so you’re thinking of me when you land.”

Upon Caden’s arrival, Greyson is assigned to monitor the mental state of surgeons on duty. As they work together, their attraction is mutual and combustible. Caden is self-assured, competent and hot as hell, but Greyson becomes aware of Caden’s limits.

“He stared at the way his thumb stroked the scars on my wrist. “I went out to prove that I could.”

Getting to read about how Caden and Greyson meet is essential to the foundation of their story. Additionally, the tone of being on base during wartime is effectively and convincingly conveyed and it underscores how Caden and Greyson process under stressful situations.

Cutting Edge focuses on how people push themselves for a greater good and how they can find a deep connection during traumatic times. This prequel can be read any time after the first book, Rough Edge.

This is a prequel to Rough Edge. I happened to read it after I read Rough Edge. I think you can honestly read before or after. I am one of those people who love to read the past after the present. Things you think you know are either debunked or validated. It answers questions as well as it leads you to new questions.

This is how Major Greyson Frazier and Captain Caden St. John meet. It’s war time in Iraq. A psychiatrist and an army surgeon out in Fallujah. Treating the incoming casualties has it own casualties on the medic team. Unending hours saving lives, there is no sleep and no rest for the weary. Major Frazier’s duties are to watch the doctors and nurses and to aid in their fatigue. And Greyson becomes very invested in Caden’s welfare leading to feelings. I loved getting the background of how Greyson and Caden became a couple. Their passion and intensity was their from the beginning.

And their there is Ronin......he is definitely the wild card and not in a good way for me.

Awesome prequel......reading before or after Rough Edge is preference. If you like the story from the beginning, then read Cutting before Rough, but I promise reading after is still fabulous!!!

A must read prequel in my opinion. I read Cutting Edge after I read book one Rough Edge and it gave me deeper insight into Caden and Greyson's lives when they met at war. It concentrates solely on that time, the circumstances driving them together and the implicit need they feel for one another. The stress and complete tragic chaos of their time spent there was defined so precisely that you can almost feel how their lives are beginning to unravel as a result of their meeting and falling. It's written in C.D. Reiss's signature, enthralling style leaving with you more questions and breathless waiting for the answers. I think this prequel novella was great insight after reading the first book but could also be read fluidly before you start book one as well. Whichever you preference you don't want to skip it.

I must say, it’s a must to read this prequel novella before starting this series! I’d started reading early copy of Rough Edge (even before this was released) and I felt a bit lost to this couple’s backstory. You get it all here. How Caden and Greyson (female) met during wartime, he a surgeon and she a psychiatrist. About the trials of war on the body...and mind.

Read this. You’ll understand their story much better when diving into the series. You won’t regret it.

Great Prequel

As Christine recommended I read the First book first and then this Prequel. I guess it was a great way to go back and see some of the foreshadowing of book 1. I think this I’d definitely the way to go. Loved the prequel. Can’t wait to dive back into Book 2.

I’m not sure how CD Reiss made me obsess and fall in love with these characters in a novella but she did. This is a complete, hot and intense story set in the military Middle East. The story is born of desperation, fatigue and attraction. I literally need the rest of the books even though technically I could leave the novella as a finished piece.

This novella surprised me and felt like my love of Marriage Games but very different to my dislike of some of her other books.

4.75 Caden missing a word in his nametape John

As with all prequels this comes before book 1 ahhaa. but i enjoyed it better after book 1.. i think i was more invested in their relationship. I think this book really captures a lot of the war.. its very accurately represented truly since i have been to the places talked about in the book.. you would think it would be written in some fake times ... but no everything still looks like it is described in this book!

War is an ugly beast where people are proving their worth, fighting for their country and namesake and also trying to form bonds with those around them in terms of comedy and games. We know we may get shot at .. but we also want to know the people are around us... are our family, friends and teammates.

I personally don't know any psychs. that scrub in to hospitals and i didn't think this was allowed .. but lets pretend not everything has to follow protocol... just like having sex in the middle east is highly illegal and gets you banned from the country ... lets enjoy their story.

Their story is quick and intense as love tends to be .. but its filled with honesty

“So you know, in the changing room? My ass was because I was annoyed that you came in. I showed you the rest because I want to fuck you.”
My pussy clenched as if he’d kissed it. “That is highly inappropriate.”
“I know.” He put on his cap and left.

I think this book makes you love Caden more than book 1.. it makes you feel the connection ...

I’m officially obsessed.

The prequel to this series is so important, so I highly recommend starting there if you are planning on reading this series. I felt like my heart was racing the entire time I was reading this book for so many reasons – between the intensity of the romance and the fact that their relationship was building in the middle of a warzone in the first book – then the turn the books take in the first and second books – whew!

It’s so clear to me, in these books, why I love CD Reiss so much. She’s a beautiful writer, who obviously puts a lot of time into researching the topics she is writing about. She’s able to mix beautiful prose with super taboo and steamy scenes without making them seem raunchy or cringey.

I can’t wait to finish the ARC I’m reading right now so that I can finish this series!

Do you ever pick up books that are completely out of your comfort zone? I like to do it sometimes and that’s exactly why I picked up this book. I have never read C.D. Reiss before because, frankly, I didn’t think I would like it. But, I have had a few books surprise me this year so I thought I would give this novella a chance.

Well, it just goes to show that you do know your own tastes very well. I wasn’t into this book. If you like an erotic, angsty tale then this is going to be the start of a series that, no doubt, you will love. Personally, I don’t like erotic angsty tales. They irritate rather than titillate. Because of this, I could appreciate why other people enjoy this series, sadly for me it just didn’t land.
