The Epistulae morales ad Lucilium (Latin for moral letters to Lucilius) are a collection of 124 letters which were written by Seneca at the end of his life, during his retirement, and written after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily. The letters highlight many moral and ethical ways to live, and address many of the issues known to man, about life and death. These letters have been carefully adapted into a contemporary format to allow for easy reading and understanding.
This is the complete volume, containing all the letters 1 - 124.
“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality””Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart” “we should live as id we lived in plain sight of all men, and we should think as… someone who could look into our souls” “This whole world is my country” “friendship, there is not such thing as good or bad fortune for the individual, we all live in common” “philosophy is a she, commands our attendance” Valuable piece of ancient wisdom, enjoyed reading stoic philosophy acknowledging the influence it has on CB Therapy and modern society, nice to notice some fractures or components from this thinking like rationalism and anti hedonism, really interesting
I’ve read enough of this to consider it fully done!
As far as my reflection goes, I’m going to keep this one super simple. It’s great. There’s a lot of useful advice on the human experience and I can see the benefits of reading it. I don’t regret reading it.
Please realize that Seneca was writing to a friend. It doesn’t read like a textbook. What you learn is through dialogue and it’s repetitive.
4/5. It’s not my absolute favorite but it’s got good content.
This is one of the best books that I have read in recent time. It has provided me with wisdom with which to address life's difficulties. I certainly recommend it to whoever seeks useful philosophy of life that brings ultimate happiness. Love it.
