Scrumptious delights to bake at home. Cupcake bakeries are a welcome development that is meeting the enthusiastic delight of everyone. The reason is quite simple -
My prior baking experience is limited to reading books with chef protagonists, and a few times I've sliced up those rolls of cookie dough.
But I saw an episode of Bobby Flay's Throwdown where they had a cupcake baking competition, and so I decided to check out a book on cupcakes. My library offered this.
With my husband's sweet assistance, which he acquired by watching his mom and sister baking as a kid, I made the chocolate chip cream cheese cupcakes. They are delicious. They didn't end up really looking much like the cover cupcake, but man, I'm so proud. They taste delicious! The recipe was follow-able, even to me. Thanks, 125 Best Cupcake Recipes!
Like: - Decent variety of cupcake and, separately, frosting recipes. (I bookmarked 20+ to try). - Each cupcake recipe has suggestions for which frostings go well with it.
Don't like: - There are too few photos. - Would like more info on how to nicely frost cupcakes. (Photos of the tools and techniques would have been helpful.) - The author's intros to recipes often seemed pointless, annoying, and/or about the author instead of the cupcake. Examples: "Whether you pronounce apricot with a long a or a short a, your palate will not taste the difference." or "How could I have a cupcake book without a brownie-inspired recipe in it? I couldn't..." or "I'm sure you know by now how much I love chocolate chips."
Haven't tried any of the recipes yet. Will keep it on the shelf a while to try a few, then decide whether it's worth keeping on hand.
I'm usually pretty skeptical of giant food-specific compendiums like this, but this one is actually pretty good. There are some interesting flavor combinations and pretty good basic recipes that you can use as a jumping-off point for creating your own variations. I haven't been totally in love with everything I've made from this collection, and I do have some quibbles (chocolate mousse is NOT just melted chocolate mixed with whipped cream), but the average has been pretty decent overall and it's a good resource to turn to when I need something like a plain white cake recipe to riff on.
I purchased this book in order to hold a gift certificate for my wife to a cupcake cooking class. So, I wasn't really worried about how good the cookbook was since it wasn't the main gift. We had a great time at the class, but my wife has been cooking cupcakes from this book for the last couple of months. We haven't had a bad one yet and she keeps finding recipes she wants to try. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to try some some fun and tasty cupcake recipes.
I am in love with this book. I love cupcakes first of all. But this is just one of the rare books on cupcakes that isn't about decorating them. It has so many amazing and unique recipes. Granted I have only tried a handful, so this review may change as I go, but I love this book so far. She makes it super easy too and I find the recipes simple enough to follow.
This is hands down my favourite cupcake book so far! And I have a lot. The recipes are spot on everytime and are easily adapted to suit vegetarians or vegans. I would recommend anyone who wants one good cupcake book to buy this one. Ive used it so many times and I have never had one cake failure! FABULOUS!
