Sierra is a successful real estate agent living a comfortable life. But she has a secret so painful that she has erected emotional walls around her heart that block anyone from getting close. Then the dreams begin. In one, Sierra is running from the sound of dogs barking and men chasing her in the darkness; in another, she’s in a field, lashes coming down on her back; in many, she is a woman of faith named Dorothy, fighting for civil rights. Sierra tries to ignore the dreams and continue with life as usual―but the more she disregards them , the longer and deeper she sleeps, and soon the long nights begin to affect her work and sanity. Finally, she seeks the help she needs. The more she works to understand the nature of and reason for her dreams, the more freedom Sierra feels in her own life. Doors to relationships with other people open. She meets a client that could be the love of her life. And soon, she has a decision to she can be who she has always been, living in fear; or she can be Dorothy, allow the dreams to show her who she really is, reconnect with God, and fill the void in her spirit.
First, this is a sub-genre I think I have read very least of it. Not because I don't like this genre but I don't get to read more book on this genre and also I don't know many authors from this genre. When I was reading this book. I had an early intuition that this is going to be either very bad or something awesome. And I'm very glad to say that it is the latter one. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and the way this book turns out in some mid-sections and the climax, I loved it.
When this book starts the character of Sierra is something very unusual, and I really had a feeling that the book is going to turn in some horror story but it wasn't. There were moments that I liked so much. Sorry, I can't talk about them as they will be a spoiler. The character of Sierra is written beautifully, the description by Author is good and very connecting. Sierra captured my attention from the starting of the book and it never let me go. I liked that a lot. I'm happy that there are not a lot of characters and that a very good thing. I always had a comparison going on in my head about Sierra & Dorothy and I must say that really captivated my mind in an amazing way.
The plot of the book is very unique for me, I haven't read anything like this one before. The story is quite strong with respect to the plot and I loved it. This book is first for me from the author and I must say this is a really nice book author had written. There is definitely something that will engage the readers that no other book had done. The scenes written in the book are created in a way that is really amazing and the dialogues, well I would say like this that scenes and dialogues are complimenting each other. And I guess, that a perfect thing to happen in a book. It'll feel like you are watching a movie!
*** I would really like to recommend this book to all the romance readers ***
Awaken is a very unique story - yes you read that right - unique - the story starts off with a thought provoking - heart pounding event. The good thing about it is that this is just the beginning for Sierra. What starts out looking like a curse turns out to be a Blessing in disguise. The author really knows how to weave a good yarn. this story was very well woven together. The book is like a butterfly - it starts out like it is in a cocoon and it gradually becomes a beautiful butterfly - but boy what she has to go through to become one. I love how this author writes - I can't wait to read her next book. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

I liked the concept for this book. Sierra having dreams or flash backs to another time where she is Dorothy, a slave. At first I didn't understand the reason for the dreams but I was still intrigued. When you put the two stories together, you get a very interesting story. Otherwise, if you were to separately compare the two women; Dorothy was more intriguing to me.
As the story went on, I found I couldn't stop reading. Due to the concept of the storyline. As I got to know Sierra better, I felt for her but not as strongly as I would have wanted. Although, Sierra is relatable. In a way, I think we can all relate to her and our faith in God. At a point in time, many of us may have felt like we wanted to lose or have lost faith in God. However, as Sierra learned, God was always there with her. Denese Shelton is a nice voice for women authors.
The protagonist of Awaken is Sierra, who finds herself having these really intense dreams to another time where she is Dorothy, a slave. The dreams leave Sierra asleep for days. In these dreams, Sierra finds herself in distressing situations, but she seems to be comforted by characters repeatedly coming back. For all of her life, Sierra has kept a secret from everyone, causing her to push away from people, including her own family.
Sierra's dreams eventually lead her to seek help from a therapist, Dr. Cayden, who helps Sierra make a breakthrough from the dreams. She also works through an event that happened to her during her childhood. Dr. Cayden's therapy, Sierra's "love interest" Steve, and the dreams all allow Sierra to find her way back to God and she is able to regain her faith. Sierra is also able to restore the strained family relationship.
Readers follow Sierra's journey to self discovery and "awakening" her inner spirit in her efforts to allow herself to love and open up to those around her. The author has created a great book in Awaken, and I look forward to reading her future books.
I received a complimentary paperback copy of this book from the publishers as part of a PopUp Blog Tour from BookSparks in exchange for this post. A positive review was not required.
The book awakened, by Denese Shelton was not only inspirational,it was also packed with a lot of history information. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more, engaging you with every chapter. Awaken the novel, could easily become “Awaken” the movie! it was just that good. Denese Shelton certainly has created a masterpiece that everyone should read. Thanks for your knowledge and your gift .

Sierra is real estate agent, making a pretty good living, bur she is having very real and vivid dreams, where she is herself, by goes by a different name. These dreams that leave her scared and confused. And have her falling into a deep sleep, sometimes for days. These dreams eventually lead her to seek help from a therapist, where Dr. Cayden then helps Sierra make a breakthrough from the dreams and over something that happened to her during her childhood. Through these dreams, the therapy, and help from a love interest named Steve, she finds her way back to God and finds her faith again. She even finds the strained relationship in her family, restored. A very good read!
