Even though the story part of this book is slight, I found it charming and very enjoyable. Sophie started skating when she was three. She is now eight and wants to be a professional figure skater.

The reader is told about the dedication necessary for Sophie to work toward her goal. Included are her 5 times a week group morning skating classes, her 1 times a week private skating class, and her 2 times a week group ballet classes.

For aspiring figure skaters, included is a lot of education about the details of skating and a bit about ballet too. The various positions and moves and how to do them are described.

The illustrations are probably what I loved most about this book. So many children, mostly girls but a few boys too, of many ethnic backgrounds, all shown skating and dancing. Beautiful colors, interesting postures. I would have spent a lot of time pouring over these pictures when I was young. They remind me of the old paper doll cut out books.

The dog at the end is cute too.

This is a perfect read for our upcoming Olympic unit in 2nd grade! :-) Our essential question is: Is there science in sports? with sub-questions focusing on growth mindset. This story helps to demonstrate both, while focusing in on one sport, figure skating (my favorite). I really loved how the author, Rachel Isadora, combined story elements with nonfiction pieces, focusing on the equipment and learning needed to train for a sport.

The books I've seen by this author all include children of varying ethnic backgrounds participating in activities (here, ice skating with a little ballet) - the ethnicity of the characters is obvious from the illustrations but is not part of the story line.
