Is it possible for someone to rise from the dead? Before meeting Harmschapel’s undertaker Patrick Coopland, Detective Sergeant Blake Harte would most certainly have thought not. However, when Coopland is killed in a car crash on the way home with his wife, Angela, she becomes convinced that her mentally abusive husband is still haunting her from beyond the grave. The day after Coopland’s funeral, Angela reports her most terrifying encounter yet, forcing Blake and the rest of Harmschapel police to open the grave of Patrick Coopland to prove once and for all that he has been laid to rest.
But what they find in Coopland’s grave sets into motion a case that will require Blake’s lateral thinking in ways he has never had to use before, but his mind is far from on the job. With his relationship with Harrison Baxter in already uncertain territory, Blake’s ex-boyfriend Nathan gets in contact with potentially devastating news that threatens to change his life forever.
The past is filled with skeletons, and Harrison and Blake may not survive what threatens to be unburied…
In the process of reading now I’m at 50% and I’m soooo fascinated in the mystery but I just have to say I REALLY really am starting to dislike Blake so far he’s so self-important, entitled and sanctimonious I’m really having a hard time with him. My feelings about him started to change 2 books ago and it’s just been downhill from there. At this point I feel bad but kinda hope Harrison bails. I hope by the end of this book Blake gets some redemption but for now I’m definitely not rooting for him. That said the writing is great and the story is awesome so far, I love this series!
Update: I’m finished! As far as the mystery goes I really enjoyed this one in away that got be so addicted to the series in the first couple of books. But sadly I deducted a star because of how much I ended up disliking Blake in this book, by the end I was seriesly hoping Harrison would call it quites with him. I experienced him as selfish, self centered, controlling and immature. I was very surpsied by how strongly I disliked him at the end, my feeling kind of overshadowed how much I enjoyed the mystery. I really hope to see some redeeming qualities in Blake in the next book. I also, wasn’t crazy about Sally either, her and Blake were just acting like high schoolers to me. I get the thing with Tom wasn’t okay but at the same time Sally being so disrespectful of Harrison’s choices wasn’t okay for me. Overall I experienced a lot of strong feelings in this book but overall enjoyed it.
Another crazy, out there mystery case for Blake to solve! There are twists left, right, up and down so good luck trying to figure all of that out before the end! And I’m glad Harrison is the adult in the relationship. He puts up with more from Blake than most people would!
Wow! Just finished reading this, the next gripping Blake Hart mystery, and what a page turner! Plots and subplots, baffling and intense, I couldn’t put it down. Another great book, which is so transferable to a TV. I hear rumours of an audiobook for this series, so come on Netflix... Blake Hart mysteries has so much potential! I’d totally watch this over most of the crap the BBC produce.
This series is so good! I have yet to solve the mystery before Blake Harte does. My only complaint about anything is that I wish the books were longer. However, things are always moving forward and keeping you guessing. I look forward to so many more stories from Mr. Innes!
Another great book with a bizarre case. Really enjoying this series. My only complaint is that the book is quite short but on the other hand I didn't have to wait too long between books. Looking forward to reading more about Blake and Harrison.
Good mystery, although I had an idea of the solution before it was disclosed. I actually liked the continuing relationship part of the story better, including Mini and Matti's tiny bit -- I'm still hoping for good things for the two of them!
Two things wrong with this book. First off, it's too short. We're not talking great literature like The Metamorphosis by Kafka where the brevity does not harm the story. We're talking about lower rug genre fiction. The author should put more effort into his books. Second problem in this book revolves around one of the oldest cliches used in mysteries. I won't say what that cliche is except to say that when the mystery was presented, I knew the answer immediately. I said to myself, please, don't let it be (fill in the blank).
It's a shame that Innes seems to be phoning in his books. The first ones in the series were very good. I think his problem is, he is trying too hard to pump books out too rapidly. Shame.
Sargent Blake heard a man in a store yelling at a woman assumed to be his wife. She embarrassed him because she forget to put the money in the bank to pay for the groceries. Blake went over and told the man ( a undertaker ) not to do this to her its a simple mistake people make. They took off . Blake soon left and ended up behind them The man was driving really fast. The man died in the accident and his wife Angela had a broken arm. Heres were the fun and confusion starts. Like a 2nd story in the story Blake who is gay gets a call from a old boyfriend. He tells him he was tested for AIDs and was waiting for the results. So with all the strange things happening with the undertakers death and wifes confusion he was one ball of tension all the time.
All of Robert Innes, The Blake Harte Mysteries books keeps you wondering what happens next, and how quickly Blake Harte can unravel mystery behind each crime. Because, the crime that happens at Harmschapel are unbelievable. I enjoy all the books in this series, and can't wait for the next book to see what happens next. I give it five 🌟 and recommend this series to anyone who loves a great mystery.
Much more of Harrison in this one, though Blake is doing his usual effort of protecting Harrison when actually the younger, less experienced Harrison is actually more than capable of handling Blake. A suitably twisty plot with lots of how did they do that and why did they. All explained by tye end. New neighbour Tom is added in but the question is why and when will we find out!
This is the first book I read in this series. Blake has a strange case to solve. There are twists and turns in the plot. I saw one coming, but not the others. Blake also has a personal crisis. I didn't like how he kept a secret from his boyfriend, who had a right to know. I enjoyed the mystery and the characters. I will be reading more if this series.
Another great instalment of this highly entertaining who-done-it series. I'm loving the fact that these really make me think about the mystery, without going over the top or being completely implausible. I'm also loving the progression of the relationship between Blake and Harrison. It might be a fade-to-black series, but as things stand, I'm not missing the smexy times at all.
Once again Blake finds himself in the center of a crime that is far from ordinary. This series always keeps you guessing right up until the end. Add in a bit of real life drama and you have a wonderful series that is easy to read and not to be missed
Another excellent adventure for Blake and Harrison. This one stretches the lines of credibility a bit in the end, but who cares? It was short and fun and entertaining. All you need in a mystery.
