The Adventures of Pixie Piper #1

Las aventuras de Pixie Piper: El respiro de un hada

Rate this book

Maricel Jiménez was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She began writing at a very early age (to be precise, she wrote before she could write, basically scribbling gibberish on notebooks) and showed an inclination towards poetry and fantasy from the very beginning. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2000 with a degree in psychology from the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez where she participated in several literature and creative writing courses and workshops. In 1998, she obtained 3rd place in an English short fiction creative writing competition at the University with her short story “The Plebiscite”. In 2010, she was a finalist at the En Rojo Micro Story competition with “Preludio”.

After 2002 Maricel became a mother and began diving into the word of YA and Middle Grade Fantasy Adventures. She found her niche. Very at home in magical lands with witches, dragons, elves, and the likes, Maricel quickly began researching the myths behind these stories and soon found herself writing her own. Her first Middle Grade fantasy adventure series: The Adventures of Pixie Piper debuted in March 2015 with the first volume: A Fairy’s Breath, now available wherever books are sold.

Maricel currently lives in Puerto Rico with her two sons and attempts to grow organic food in her balcony. Yesterday she tasted her very first balcony pineapple!

When not writing or digging through dirt she likes to pretend she is a circus performer/ballerina and takes aerial silks and ballet classes. The only thing better than writing is dancing. If you play it, she will dance…

Such a sweet read. With a couple of rough days in a row, I wanted something light that would make me smile. Little did I know I'd get that type of read from the adventures of Pixie Piper. Advanced readers could probably tackle this in a day and sometimes you need something sweet to counter what we see everyday.

The Adventures of Pixie Piper is the first of hopefully many books to explore the Isle if Dahna. Pixie is a young lass with a fiery temper, an overprotective mom and a fairy god father.

Feeling as if nothing interesting happens in her life, Daedalus shows her that fairies are quite real and that kids' wishes can come true.

If you'd like a lovely read with adventure and food mentions that make you wonder if they exist, this is a lovely book for all to enjoy.

Cheers

At the 2024 Puerto Rico Comic Con, I was browsing the many booths when I spotted a set of books with eye-catching covers, all with a girl sporting fairy wings. I struck a conversation with the author, who was wearing an equally eye-catching set of fairy wings herself, and was charmed by her pleasant demeanor and clear love for literature, so I promised to buy the first book of her series, read it and give an honest review.

From the start, the premise is a good one that'll catch any child's imagination, as we meet main character Pixie, her peculiar life (such as her overprotective mother and her strict organic diet), and then we learn due to a strange fellow that's been following her that Pixie is a fairy, and he takes her to meet their kingdom, their queen, and just simply to put some excitement into Pixie's life. Not all is the color of roses, though, as soon enough they all learn of some evil fairies and a nefarious scheme they're concocting, so Pixie and a new friend must stop it. From the start, we see the author embrace a very imaginative mindset with the setting, the characters, and how the rules of the magical world of fairies work, the clothes they wear, food they eat, modes of transportation they use, the homes they live in, etc. It's clear the author has a very vivid imagination and she put it to good use, making for a whimsical and fun setting that is easy to picture in one's head. It helps that most of the characters we meet are flawed yet likable, which makes for a more engaging story.

The book is not without its flaws, though, such as some grammar mistakes throughout the story, namely a lack of commas in several places. Another is that Pixie is a ten year old girl but her dialogue sometimrs doesn't sound like a ten year old, rather someone more adult. And, at least to me, the story moved a little too fast for my liking. I know I'm not of the age demographic for this book, but even back when I was that age, I liked longer stories. Pixie accepts being a fairy and the world of fairies and magic very quickly, meetings also go by rather quickly at times, among other things; it's a quite fast paced book. I personally would have liked for the story to take its time for a bit, paint a broader picture and let us get to know the setting and characters a little more. What it does, ot does well, I just would have liked a little more.

Overall, I find myself giving the book 3 stars due to my personal preferences, though again, I'm not of the age demographic for the book. But despite that, it's not a bad book by any means. It's quite imaginative and never gets boring, and it's a story I can see young children enjoying a lot. It saddens and annoys me that children these days get glued to phones all day long and seem to not even know what a book is, so I always encourage parents of young children to get them started on enjoying books early. This book is definitely a very good choice for parents wanting their young children to get into books and literature early in life, ideal for parents and children to read together and make for a nice bonding experience. I'll certainly be checking out the second book; it features a dragon, and I do so love dragons, so I look forward to seeing what this imaginative author can do with a dragon in a world of fairies.

I wanted to write something fun to read; an adventure! I am still a child at heart and I love fairies. I think they are beautiful, mysterious, and interesting. I researched and read until I found something that inspired me. In the end I realized it would be cool to suddenly discover you are a fairy; to find out that they do exist, that fairy godparents make wishes come true and a regular kid can be magical. Pair that discovery with a natural, organic setting, then add a little suspense and danger. I'm very happy with the end result and I hope my readers will be happy too.

No había leído un libro infantil tan bueno hasta ahora. Con cada palabra, me transporté a cuando me la pasaba viendo Tinker Bell; un golpecito justo en la nostalgia. Simplemente maravilloso.

Book one of The Adventures of Pixie Piper series drew me in and then left me wanting more. This read is perfect for any kid wanting to lose themselves in a world of fairy fantasy.

We are first introduced to a cute 10-year-old girl named Pixie and her friend Misa. Pixie’s mom is overly cautious and extremely over protective of her daughter. On the plus side, mom makes awesome all-natural snacks. Pixie wisely obeys all the rules, but her adventurous nature doesn’t keep her imagination from exploring.

The appearance of a strange man in strange clothing telling Pixie strange things is beyond strange. Little did she know; the Piper’s lives would never be the same again.

I love fantasy books. There are no set rules. The author can create a magical rainbow ring and a fairy-eating decapus all with the swipe of a pen.

What I love about this book are the messages portrayed. Teamwork, perseverance, and respect are significant qualities to nurture at any age. Delmes and Pixie would never have succeeded without being able to rely on each other. Pixie never would have learned how to fly if she gave up after the first couple of tries. No telling what would have happened to Pixie if she didn’t obey all the seemingly unnecessary rules.

I cannot wait to dive into the second book. I’m looking forward to seeing how Pixie’s newly found self-discovery will affect her.
